CENTURY SLEEPER  "Awaken"

Se da qualche parte appare la figura di Ian Arkley, grande artista inglese che ha militato in bands quali My Silent Wake, Ashen Mortality, Paramaecium, Seventh Angel o The Other Window, vale la pena prestargli attenzione dal momento che è un tipo sempre in procinto di creare qualcosa di speciale.
Infatti Century Sleeper è il suo eccezionale progetto in cui collabora James Allin (USA) dei Visionaire e degli Icarian. Tutti gli sforzi di questi due musicisti, specializzati nei suoni doom/death, sono stati finalizzati a far nascere questo stupendo capolavoro di gothic cristiano. Il titolo della loro release, ”Awaken”, esprime il vero spirito di quest’album.
La musicalità è fresca come la brezza del mattino che risveglia i nostri cuori. Le melodie multicolori e lo splendido cantato pulito di Ian la fanno da pardone, la sua voce suona a tratti tenera e delicata ma anche ossessiva, pazza; cupa a volte ma mai priva della propria caratteristica sensibilità.
Ottimo esempio è ‘As I Close The Final Page’ dove la voce è veramente toccante, suonando quasi simile a quella di Nick Cave o Darren White (ex-vocalist degli Anathema). Altro esempio è ‘Vorage’ con generosi e massicci riff di chitarra, in cui Ian si destreggia tra delicatezza ed aggressività. In alcuni brani possiamo anche ascoltare un cantato growl profondo e potente.
Passando ad altre canzoni, ‘Your Once Loving Heart’ ci lascia sorpresi per come riesce ad amalgamare perfettamente l’eccezionale cantato in growl e l’oscuro cantato pulito, circondati dalle melodie ritmiche create dalla batteria e dalla sapiente armonia del suono della chitarra, che sembrano lasciarsi alle spalle ogni rimpianto.
In ‘Arnos Vale’ il growl è ancora forte e aggressivo. In questa canzone si sente anche la voce della cantante ospite Katherine Hamilton, che abbellisce più di una canzone dell’album. Il riuscito duetto di Ian e Kate lo ascoltiamo anche nella melodica “My Face In Eternity”, con un ritmo di batteria pulito e lento su cui si innestano pesanti accordi di chitarra che accarezzano l’ascoltatore. Nella calma ‘Fainted World’ la voce di Kate crea un perfetta e delicata melodia di fondo. Quando subentra la magnifica, piena di pace e tenera voce di Ian restiamo alcuni minuti catturati ed estasiati da questo romanico paesaggio da loro creato, senza avere più coscienza di dove ci troviamo. La bellezza di questo brano risiede nella magica presenza delle tastiere così come nella perfetta alchimia creata dai perfetti riff di chitarra, dai toni alti e delicati, uniti al lento ritmo della batteria.
Altre canzoni sono ‘Look Straight Through’ e la breve ’Autumn’, dal delicato suono di chitarra accentuato dal forte e chiaro suono del basso, ed ancora ‘Centenary’, con un interessante pattern ritmico di stile etnico (ottimo lavoro di James). La migliore canzone del lotto è ‘Lost On Your Ocean’, hot, vivace, che sembra quasi bruciare per le molteplici e incredibili emozioni che trasmette, sempre cullandoci con melodie oscure e ossessive. Le parole sono piene di intensi sentimenti: ”Your eyes have always held a fascination for me/(…) How do you work such strange magic on me/Breaking me fully with just one kiss(..) I’m broken on your waves of punishing desire/You burn in my veins like a river of fire” (“I tuoi occhi mi hanno sempre tenuto aggrappato a te/ Come sei riuscito ad incantarmi così/ Distruggendomi completamente con un unico bacio/ Sono perso nelle tue onde di desiderio proibito/ Bruci nelle mie vene come un fiume di fuoco”).
Come Ian ha riferito in una intervista, dal punto di vista delle liriche “Awaken” è molto tetro e profondo; ciò si può ben evincere dall’ascolto dell’album. Non ci sono canzoni che presentano tematiche direttamente cristiane, piuttosto sembrano ricordare una forma di arte poetica espressa da un animo melanconico. La canzone ‘The End’ è una testimonianza di ciò: ”I found you/ Tears in your eyes/I kissed you/Once you were mine/I’ve lost you/And this is goodbye/ I kiss you/We tremble, we cry” (“Ti ho trovata/ Lacrime nei tuoi occhi/ Ti ho baciata/ Una volta eri mia/ Ti ho persa/ Questo è un arrivederci/ Ti bacio/ Tremo/ Piango”)
La musica dei Century Sleeper è piacevole da ascoltare. Può piacere ai fans dei Type O Negative, dei Paradise Lost o dei Dead Can Dance. Undici ottimi brani e per chiudere una bonus track nascosta, la canzone medievale ‘Gaudete’, reintrerpretata in una interessante ottica gothic, davvero da non perdere. “Awaken” è semplicemente uno dei migliori album del genere. Eccezionale e forse una delle migliori collaborazioni degli ultimi tre anni.

If somewhere appears the person of Ian Arkley from United Kingdom- great artist we recognize from bands like My Silent Wake, Ashen Mortality, Paramaecium, Seventh Angel or The Other Window- it seems only one-that it prepares something special and worth to put attention. Indeed Century Sleeper is his exceptional project where collaborates with James Allin (United States) from Visionaire and Icarian.
All efforts of these two musicians, who specialize themselves in doom/death tunes, brought fantastic work and let to born a true masterpiece on the christian gothic scene.
The title of their release ”Awaken” expresses the true spirit of this album. Music sounds really freshly as some morning breeze and just awake our hearts. Especially by many-colored melodies and wonderful clean vocal of Ian, which once is tender, delicate and once obsessive, insane; another one very gloomy but never deprived his sensitivity.
Good example of that revelation is the song ‘As I Close The Final Page’ where voice is really touched and sometimes sounds similar to the voice of Nick Cave or Darren White (ex-Anathema vocalist). Another one example is ‘Vorage’ with handsome, massive guitar’s riffs, where Ian balances between delicacy and aggression.
In some songs we will hear also profound, powerful growl. Except this two I signalized, very beautiful presents the growl’s part in the title ‘Your Once Loving Heart’, where we can wonder great union between it and dark clean vocal on the background of rhythmic percussion, accompanied by deft guitars, which want to throw away their regret.
Inside of other track ‘Arnos Vale’ this growl is strong and aggressive too. Here appears also female vocal in the person of Katherine Hamilton as the guest, which will adorn some songs on the album. Nice duet of Ian and Kate we will listen for example in very melodic title “My Face In Eternity”, with clear drums and low, heavy chords of guitars, which fondle our hearing. In the quiet ‘Fainted World’ Kate’s backing vocal is properly delicate. When we add here magnificent, full of peace and so tender voice of Ian we’ll stay many minutes under influence of that romantic landscape, they create, without knowing where we are. The beauty of this piece we discover through magical presence of keyboards as well, played in very good taste, guitar riffs on the high, sensitive tones and calm tempo of the drums.
To the composed titles belong also ‘Look Straight Through’ as the shortest on the record with ticklish guitar, ’Autumn’ accented by distinct sound of bass and ‘Centenary’, with interesting drums in ethno style (good job of James).
Capital track is the ‘Lost On Your Ocean’ very hot, vivacious and just seems to burn from many incredible emotions, of course not without obsessive dark, gothic melody. Also the lyric is full of intensive feelings: ”Your eyes have always held a fascination for me/(…) How do you work such strange magic on me/Breaking me fully with just one kiss(..) I’m broken on your waves of punishing desire/You burn in my veins like a river of fire.”
As Ian told in one of interviews, lyrically “Awaken” is quite bleak, heartfelt and certainly it is. Within the songs we won’t find topics straightly influenced in Christianity. It remembers more art from poetry with melancholic soul. Song ‘The End’ is the proof of that: ”I found you/ Tears in your eyes/I kissed you/Once you were mine/I’ve lost you/And this is goodbye/ I kiss you/We tremble, we cry.”
Music of Century Sleeper it hears with pleasure. It can be appreciated by the fans Type O Negative, Paradise Lost or Dead Can Dance. Eleven well-done pieces and on conclusion one hidden track-old, medieval song ‘Gaudete’ in interesting gothic invention, worth to listen. “Awaken” is just great record of that genere. Exceptional and perhaps one of the best collaborations in last three years.
