DROTTNAR  "Spiritual Battle"

La Norvegia è da sempre terra ricca di una tradizione musicale, soprattutto parlando di metallo pesante.
Così la band oggetto di questa recensione riprende la tradizione black metal della propria terra e nel 1996 dà vita al progetto Drottnar.
La prima cosa che balza all’orecchio dell’ascoltatore è la buona qualità della registrazione di questo “Spiritual Battle”, album che si muove su sonorità molto care ad un sound black metal di tipica matrice nordica, ma che in qualche passaggio ricorda un death metal che in passato è stato molto caro ai cinque componenti della band.
Comunque il genere di questo album si può anche catalogare sotto l’etichetta di Viking Black Metal, col 2003 e il MCD “Anamorphosis” i Drottnar diventeranno una “technical black-metal band”.
Ma torniamo a questo “Spiritual Battle”, che altro non è che una compilation che racchiude i primi due DemoMCD della band; le prime tre tracce appartengono al DemoMCD intitolato “A White Realm” del 1998 mentre le altre canzoni sono del DemoMCD registrato nel 1997 quando il gruppo si chiamava Vitality. Il cambio del nome è conseguente al cambio di stile del gruppo se con i Vitality suonavano death metal con i Drottnar il sound si orienta sul black metal.
Allora “Spiritual Battle” come già detto in precedenza è un album di (un)black metal, che racchiude un po’ tutte le caratteristiche del genere, con le chitarre ch giocano un ruolo più che fondamentale, supportate dall’ottima prova del singer Sven-Erik Lind sia in fase di growl che di scream.
L’album si può dividere in due parti, la prima racchiude le prime tre canzoni, caratterizzate da un suono un po’ più grezzo, mentre la seconda parte prende forma con le ultime quattro tracce di questa compilation hanno un suono più pulito dove la voce del cantante si trasforma, dallo scream dei brani precedenti, in un growl cupo, e le sonorità a tratti assumono contorni che si lasciano abbracciare da un sound doom.
Molto forte anche la parte dei testi, giusto per citarne alcuni: l’opener ‘A White Realm’ che dice: “The time has come / For Christ to hold sway / Because the evil empire is defeated / Now the good hordes / Invade the scenery / That belongs to The Mighty One / Throughout the land / Christ's love is spread / To build this- a holy realm / Never will this white realm fall / Like the evil did...” ; oppure in ‘Away From Destruction’ è molto bella questa parte: ” I'm not afraid / My heart is clean / I'm living by my faith in Christ / Sanctified by His blood”.
Bellissime anche le parole di ‘Missing Souls’ che vale la pena citarle per intero: “Silence / Listen to the Word of God / Your soul is missing / Cry out / The truth will reach your mind / The healing life / No soul will ever live in peace / Without Him / Submit to the Savior... / Heed the name / That brings salvation / Heed the name-Jesus.” ; bello anche il testo di ‘Doom Of AntiChrist’ dove si racconta di come il male cadrà difronte allo splendore del Cristo.
Bel CD di black metal questo “Spiritual Battle” che dimostra le ottime capacità del gruppo. Forse la differenza che si sente tra i due DemoMCD che compongono questa compilation può disorientare l’ascoltatore, ma col tempo i pezzi trovano l’amalgama giusta e danno vita ad un lavoro che supera a pieni voti la sufficienza.

So this band resumed the black metal tradition of their land and in 1996 they worked to the Drottnar project
The first thing that a listener can notice is the good recording quality of this album "Spiritual Battle", with typical black metal sounds of Nordicmatrix, but in some passages it remembers a death metal connotation that in the past it was dear to the five members of the band.
However the genre of this album can be put under the label of Viking Black Metal in 2003 and with the MCD “Anamorphosis” Drottnar band became a “technical black-metal band”.
But let's return to talk about this album "Spiritual Battle" that is a compilation which contains the first two demos of the band; the first three tracks belong to the DemoMCD titled a "A White Realm" (1998) while the other songs belong to the DemoMCD recorded in 1997 when the band was called "Vitality". The changing of the name is the consequence to the changing of the style of the band. If with Vitality the sound connotation was death metal, with Drottnar is black metal oriented.
So "Spiritual Battle" as I said before, is a black metal album, that contains almost all the characteristics of this genre, with the guitars that play an important role , supported by the excellent quality of the singer Sven-Erik Lind during his growl and scream.
The album can be divided in two parts, the first one contains the first three songs characterized by a rawer sound, the second one takes shape with the last four tracks of this compilation and they have a cleaner sound where the voice of the singer changes from that kind of screaming voice of the previous songs, in a darker growl, and the sounds assume contours that are wrapped by a doom sound.
The part of the lyrics is very strong too, just to cite something : the opener 'A White Realm' that says : “The time has come / For Christ to hold sway / Because the evil empire is defeated / Now the good hordes / Invade the scenery / That belongs to The Mighty One / Throughout the land / Christ's love is spread / To build this- a holy realm / Never will this white realm fall / Like the evil did...” ; or in ‘Away From Destruction’ it's really nice the part : ”I'm not afraid / My heart is clean / I'm living by my faith in Christ / Sanctified by His blood”.

Also the lyric of 'Doom Of Antichrist' is very nice where it talks about the evil that will fall down to the splendour of Christ .
This "Spiritual Battle" black metal CD is very nice, and it demonstrates the excellent quality of the band, maybe the difference between the demos that compose this compilation can disorientate the listener , but time by time the pieces find the right mix and they make alive a work that superates with full votes the pass mark.
