"Andel na úteku" (Angel on the Run)

“Andel na úteku” (ripubblicato l’anno successivo nella versione inglese come “Angel on the Run”) è il disco d’esordio dei Kreyson, una band proveniente dalla Repubblica Ceca fondata alla fine del 1989 dal cantante Lans Kreyson (alias Ladislav Krizek) e dal chitarrista Jaroslav Barton. La formazione che registrò questo debut album è completata da Daniel Krob alla seconda chitarra, Robert Vondrovic alla batteria e Karel Adam a basso e tastiere.
Il gruppo si dedica ad un heavy metal veloce e melodico che si colloca a cavallo tra il power europeo e sonorità più neo-classicheggianti. Sin da un primo ascolto si evincono quelle che sono le principali influenze della band: si va dai Blind Guardian agli Helloween passando per i Running Wild. Questi ultimi in particolare non potevano mancare tra le fonti di ispirazione in quanto lo stesso Rolf Kasparek collaborò al disco come produttore.
L’album si apre alla grande con la ritmata e coinvolgente ‘Kreyson’ che catalizza subito l’attenzione dell’ascoltatore con il suo incedere veloce. Si prosegue poi con le ugualmente belle ‘Skalp’, ‘Carovná noc’ (‘Deep in the Night’) e ‘Upírí láska’ (‘No Blue Skies’) che si attestano sugli stessi canoni stilistici. Segue ‘Vzdálená’ (‘Faraway’), l’unica vera e propria ballad del disco, che nonostante sia curata e tutto sommato di buon livello non riesce a colpire come i brani che la precedono e le seguono. La titletrack e ‘Ztracená archa’ (‘Golden Ark’) sono i pezzi più veloci e taglienti dove una sezione ritmica martellante ed un riffing deciso e mai banale la fanno da padroni incontrastati. Del lotto di canzoni proposte restano da citare ancora ‘Svedomí’ (‘Dreamin’’) e ‘Nejde vrátit cas’ (‘I Need You’): due mid tempo con ritornelloni da power ballad da cantare a squarciagola con gli occhi lucidi ai concerti. Il disco si chiude con ‘Fade Out’, l’ennesimo capitolo convincente di un CD che non deluderà gli amanti di queste sonorità.
In definitiva ci troviamo dinnanzi ad un album che senza cercare l’innovazione o il colpo a sorpresa riesce comunque ad avere un’ottima varietà al suo interno ed ha il suo punto di forza nelle trame chitarristiche sempre ispirate e nelle doti vocali di Lans Kreyson. Consiglio a chi fosse interessato ad ascoltare qualcosa di diverso dal solito di procurarsi la versione con il cantato in ceco dato che questa lingua ha una cadenza ed una sonorità del tutto diversa rispetto all’inglese utilizzato abitualmente dalle heavy metal band.

“Andel na úteku” (published again in 1991 in English as “Angel on the Run”) is the debut album for Kreyson, a Czezh band made up in the late 1989 by the singer Lans Kreyson (a.k.a. Ladislav Krizek) together with the guitarist Jaroslav Barton. The line-up of this first issue is fulfilled by Daniel Krob playing the other guitar, Robert Vondrovic for drums and Karel Adam as bass and keyboard player.
Band dedicates itself to play a melodic/speed heavy metal which can be set between European power metal and more neo-classical sounds. The main influences are clear since the first listening: Blind Guardian and Helloween above all without forgetting Running Wild. To have this last band among the influences is not a big surprise, because Rolf Kasparek (better known as Rock 'n Rolf) took part as producer of the album.
Angel on the Run starts with the catching and strong song ‘Kreyson’ which soon capture the listener with his fast crescendo. Then follow the nice songs ‘Skalp’, ‘Carovná noc’ (‘Deep in the Night’) and ‘Upírí láska’ (‘No Blue Skies’) which shows same patterns. Next song is ‘Vzdálená’ (‘Faraway’), the real ballad of the whole album, which seems to be weaker than the other songs of the same cd, thus being well written and played. Title track and ‘Ztracená archa’ (‘Golden Ark’) are the fastest and most aggressive songs, ruled by a pulsating rhythmic pattern and strong and original riffs. ‘Svedomí’ (‘Dreamin’’) and ‘Nejde vrátit cas’ (‘I Need You’) are two well played mid tempos with great power ballad refrains suitable to be sung loud with wet eyes during live performances. Last song is ‘Fade Out’, another good song of this great album.
Even though being not a masterpiece, this is a real great album, full of various songs, maybe not so innovative but really well composed and played, in which the best feature are the many different and original guitar plots and the beautiful Lans Kreyson’s voice. My personal advice is to listen to the Czech version which results to be as different from the “usual” English as for the sounds and rhythms.
