La band britannica My Silent Wake ci ha dato una grande lezione di anatomia. Non è quel genere di anatomia che possiamo riconoscere per esempio in uno dei più famosi dipinti di Rembrandt (“Lezione di Anatomia del Dr. Tulp”).
Questa volta non è questione di segreti rivelati che fan parte del corpo umano, si tratta dell’anatomia della melanconia umana. Una profonda analisi dei pensieri più intimi ma anche più oscuri e pieni di rimorso, un’ analisi di calorosi e più vivi sentimenti che escono fuoriescono dal cuore dell’uomo.
Il CD “The Anathomy Of Melancholy” è diviso in due parti contrapposte, presentandosi con due distinti CD. La prima parte è più violenta e severa. E’ formata da puro doom/death metal. Se noi paragoniamo questo disco con “Shadow Of Sorrow”, noteremo sicuramente che il loro debutto non era poi così aggressivo e intenso nel suono. Qui noi possiamo trovare chitarre molto potenti con toni bassi e duri. Il growl è più forte, più esposto.
questo lo vediamo bene nella song ‘The Dying Things We’re Living For’, dove una cupa melodia sottolinea la sua maestosità. Nella canzone ‘Sturm’ questo tipo di growl è profondo quanto quello di Jasper Peterson dei Morphia e si riflette come un eco nel profondo dell’anima dell’ascoltatore. Nel testo Dio è direttamente il narratore. Ci sta chiamando, ci aspetta e vuole salvarci dal caos del mondo e dalle nostre colpe. Vuole sottolineare che il sacrificio di Cristo è rivolto a tutti: (..)I've lived through them all / They bleed they fall / So few hear my call / I am the door / I would gather all / Do you hear my call / I have lived through the storm / Shot down in all your wars / I have bled and given all.”
Di certo non può mancare la voce pulita di Ian. Nel momento culminante di ‘Heretic’ scopriamo un'importante inserimento di growl. Vale la pena rivolgere la nostra attenzione anche al testo dove l’artista confronta mediante una riflessione una vita senza senso di vuoti dolori tipica della nostra civiltà con la crocifissione di Gesù: “They lead you up the hill as one accused of blasphemy / Observe you coldly, as they tie your body to the cross / And as you bleed they search their souls and find no guilt within / Self righteous killers- never knowing what they've lost / Still I want to stand before you / Still I'm locked within this cage/ (…) Still I falter when I run from you / I see an image of your pain / I want to see beyond their cities / To the place where only you remain.”
C’è anche una ulteriore caratteristica nella canzone 'Anatomy Of Melancholy'; è infatti ascoltare anche brevi momenti di scream tipici del black metal, che si mescolano con altre parti vocali. Quello scream appare per esempio anche in ‘Into Silence’, che ci ricorda un po’ anche i Virgin Black. In questa track è presente un’atmosfera cupa rappresentata da buone chitarre e da linee vocali in tema. Molto ricca di musica e parti vocali è poi ‘Sullen Earth’ a cui si possono ricollegare molti generi. Fantastica, piena di inusuali riff di chitarre e per nostra sorpresa, in stile hard rock e AOR.
Tutto questo riguarda il primo CD che compone "The Anatomy Of Melancholy".
Al contrario il secondo CD è più tranquillo. E’ totalmente in stile folk metal mescolato ad influenze medievali e gotiche. Tutta questa parte è in acustico e accanto alle chitarre e percussioni appaiono anche il mandolino , il clarinetto , il violoncello e il pianoforte. Sottolineiamo le suadenti melodie di ‘Revolution’; i toni del brano sono pieni di gioia, davvero riuscito è il suono delle chitarre e molto dolci le parti di pianoforte; la batteria si trova a prorpio agio nel tempo che detta. Inoltre spiccano anche le parti del basso nonchè la delicata voce "pulita" di Ian.
Sulla stesso stile troviamo anche la canzone successiva, ‘Look Beyond The Flash, Look Beyond Mind’ in cui è presente una voce femminile nel coro.
Nella breve ‘Dying From The Fear of Death’ alla voce sentiremo Andy Lee.
Troviamo un particolare interessante nel pezzo intitolato ‘Storm’, che in realtà è la versione acustica di ‘Sturm’ dal primo CD; in questa rilettura scoprirete ottimi passaggi di pianoforte, molto commoventi.
Con questo album la musica dei My Silent Wake è arrivata chiaramente ad un'importante fase nel processo di maturazione del gruppo. Gli artisti si prendono veramente cura di ogni dettaglio del pezzo, impegnandosi con passione nella composizione e nell'esecuzione... e lo si vede, lo si sente. “The Anatomy Of Melancholy” ci mostra un ottimo livello di qualità e sicuramente non deluderà tutti gli amanti dei My Dying Bride, dei Dead Can Dance oppure dei Paradise Lost o degli Anathema. Con questo lavoro potrete trovare in conclusione un fantastico esempio di doom/metal album con sperimentazioni di folk metal.

Enormous lesson of anatomy gave us British band My Silent Wake. It is not a anatomy of this kind as we recognize for example from the one of the most famous Rembrandt’s pictures. (“Anatomy’s Lesson Of Dr. Tulp”).
This time isn’t some discovering of secrets within human’s body but true exhibition, anatomy of the human’s melancholy. Deep analysis of the most intimate thoughts-also these darkest and full of regret, analysis of hot, alive feelings straight out of the heart of man.
The record “The Anatomy Of Melancholy” is divided on two opposite parts. First is more violent and severe. It penetrates pure doom/death sphere. If we compare this disc with “Shadow Of Sorrow”, we will notice for sure that their debut wasn’t so aggressive, intense in the sound. We meet here powerful guitars in low and heavy tunes.
The growl is stronger, more exposed. It sees well in the title ‘The Dying Things We’re Living For’, where gloomy melody actually underlines his majesty. In the song ‘Sturm’ this growl sounds so profound as Jasper Peterson from Morphia and it just reflects by echo in the bottom of the listener’s soul. Inside the text, God is the narrator. He calling, waits for us and wants to save us from the chaos of the world and our own guilts. Underlines that sacrifice of Christ is for everyone: "(..)I've lived through them all / They bleed they fall / So few hear my call / I am the door / I would gather all / Do you hear my call / I have lived through the storm / Shot down in all your wars / I have bled and given all.”
Certainly can’t lack clean vocal of Ian. In the culmination moment of ‘Heretic’ we discover capital connection between it and growl. Worth to pay attention is the lyric as well, where artist considers senseless life within painful emptiness of our civilization and confronts this reflection with the crucifixion of Jesus: “They lead you up the hill as one accused of blasphemy / Observe you coldly, as they tie your body to the cross / And as you bleed they search their souls and find no guilt within / Self righteous killers- never knowing what they've lost / Still I want to stand before you / Still I'm locked within this cage / (…) Still I falter when I run from you / I see an image of your pain / I want to see beyond their cities / To the place where only you remain.”
As some innovation on the “Anatomy Of Melancholy” we’ll have possibility to hear short elements of black scream, which remarkably composes itself with other vocal parts. That scream appears for example within ‘Into Silence’, where remember a little the latest album of Virgin Black; genial gloomy and doom atmosphere created by good guitar’s section and of course thanks to singing line.
Very rich musically as well as vocally is absolutely ‘Sullen Earth’ saturated by many genres. Fantastic, uncommon guitar’s riffs and for our surprise, in the style of hard rock, AOR.
Instead the second volume is subtler, calmer. It’s totally into folk style mixed with influence of medieval and gothic. All this section is made acoustically, where next to guitars and percussion, appears also mandolin, clarinet, cello, keyboard or piano. Nice melody we’ll find btw others in ‘Revolution’.
Tunes full of joy, handsome pulling of guitar’s and mandolin’s chords, sweet sound of keyboard; drums seems to give the tempo for paddle; somewhere it hears pleasant murmur of bass, and certainly delicate clean vocal of Ian. Similar type of tempo has the song ‘Look Beyond The Flesh, Look Beyond Mind’ with female voice in the chorus. In the short ‘Dying From The Fear of Death’ on the vocal we’ll hear Andy Lee.
Interesting invention is ‘Storm’, as the acoustic version ‘Sturm’ from the first disc, where we’ll discover capital sound of piano, very touched, which just awakes some unquiet longing within.
The music of My Silent Wake clearly becomes more mature. Artists really care about this what they do, put to the sound all heart and it sees, it feels. “The Anatomy Of Melancholy” shows good level and for sure won’t disappoint all lovers of My Dying Bride, Dead Can Dance or Paradise Lost and Anathema. Great doom/death with nice folk experiments.
