I my Silent Wake sono nati in seguito allo split della band Ashen Mortality. Nel maggio 2005 Andi Leee e Jasen Whyte con Ian Arkley in testa, hanno creato questa nuova band. In seguito sono entrati nella line-up anche Alan Southorn come bassista e Kate Hamilton al violoncello. In questa occasione Andi Lee si occupa sia del basso che delle chitarre, mentre Jasen è il batterista. Il leader del gruppo, Ian, oltre a cantare, suona le parti di pianoforte e di chitarra classiche ed acustiche.
Il loro primo full-length album si intitola “Shadow Of Sorrow” e si presenta come un orizzonte incantevole e pieno di colori. La musica è profondamente spirituale e si alterna tra cariche riflessive ed altre più violente. In questo album scopriremo delle parti di batteria molto pesanti e un sacco di riff di chitarra davvero diretti. Il CD è caratterizato da molti stili musicali, come il gothic, il folk ed il thrash. L’ultimo dei questi generi probablimente è un sottile eco di un'altra band di Ian, i Seventh Angel.
Le influenze thrash le possiamo riconoscere per esempio nella canzone “Burning”, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le parti di chitarra. Qui appare anche un growl interessante; ci ricorda un selvaggio, mostruoso ruggito, davvero da "pelle d’oca". Un’altra canzone sullo stesso stile è ‘Your Cold Embrace’. Qui troviamo sporche e rozze parti di chitarra, accanto ad un growl altrettanto ruvido. Impressionanti sono anche le parti di basso, che si ritagliano un ingresso molto sottolineato in questo pezzo.
Nella track ‘Shadow Reprise’ sono invece presenti piacevoli parti di sound folk. In ‘The Mist’, diventa protagonista il violoncello nonchè la voce dolce e delicata di Ian.
Non possiamo dimenticare di citare anche le parti di batteria in questi pezzi, che sa convincere come gli altri strumenti.
La nostra attenzione si deve poi anche rivolgersi alle due canzoni più lunghe e ricche dell’album, che risultano essere fra le più riuscite ed interessanti.
Entrambe hanno uno sviluppo eccellente, e ci portano una marea di emozioni. Ridurre il miutaggio di questi pezzi sarebbe stato come commettere un delitto nei confronti dell'arte, quindi inchiniamoci di fronte alla band che ha deciso di presentarle nella loro interezza.
‘Hunting Season’ è (la prima) triste e toccante. Dotata di un “sulfureo” growl. Il testo ci porta a riflettere: “(...) We live, we breathe / But we are numb to life/ (...) We carry a crushing weight / Our fear, our lust, and all our hate / (...) Such beauty we do not see / We pass it by / While we destroy each others lives / Still we kill, still we maim / We ruin, we blacken / (…) This is our hunting season.”
La musica ha un ritmo decisamente cadenzato. Sottolinea perfettamente l'atmosfera seria del brano. Le chitarre, pesanti e lente sembra che cerchino di creare una sorta di balsamo per tutta la sofferenza che il pezzo esprime.
Invece ‘Through Greenest Meadows’ come ci suggerisce il titolo, rapisce le nostre anime per portarci in un posto idilliaco, dove regna la pace e l’armonia. All’inizio ci invita la dolce voce di Ian, con toni romantici. Dopo nove minuti di esecuzione siamo in grado di immaginarci e di vedere di fronte a noi prati verdi e quasi di sentire il profumo dell'erba. Col passare dei minuti la canzone si fa più severa. Si inserisce un growl freddo con una melodia doom/death metal.
Come abbiamo già sottolineato prima, i testi dei My Silent Wake hanno molto da raccontarci.
In 'Shadow Of Sorrow' troviamo un uomo che soffre che si rivolge a Dio con grande trasporto: “Oh Lord / I need to see you through my tears / Never let me lose hope / Lead me through, lead me on/lead me over the gates to a new tomorrow / (…) Oh Lord / On the edge of depths and despair/Never let me lose hope.”
Nella canzone 'In Darkness' possiamo inoltre leggere e sentire: "Have mercy on me, as I plead for forgiveness / (…) please reach out / Rescue me / Take my hand / Do not forsake me / With blood cleanse me / As I yearn for salvation.”
Questo CD di di debutto è ottimo. I fan dei Candlemass o dei primi Anathema o Paradise Lost non dovrebbero rimanerne delusi.

ENGLISH VERSION

The birth of My Silent Wake was practically a consequence of the split up of the band Ashen Mortality. In may 2005 Andi Lee and Jasen Whyte with Ian Arkley in front, initiated new formation. Inside appeared also Alan Southorn as the bass player and Kate Hamilton responsible by cello.
Andi Lee this time took bass and classic guitar to play. Jasen sat behind percussion. Instead Ian we will hear in the role of lead vocal, lead, rhythm, classic and acoustic guitars and piano.
Their first full-length album “Shadow Of Sorrow” extends in front of us colorful, enchanted horizon. The music is truly spiritual with violent as well as reflective charge. Profound death growl concluded some pact with melancholic, clean vocal. We’ll discover vigorous drums and a lot of wonderful guitar’s riffs.
Through the record passes many styles like gothic, folk or thrash. The last one is a subtle echo of Seventh Angel-first serious project of Ian.
Thrash influences we recognize for example in the title ‘Burning’, above all by the guitar’s sections. Here appears also characteristic growl. It remembers wild, monstrous roar, which seems to permeate every cell of flesh.
Another one thrash’s root is in ‘Your Cold Embrace’. On the background of low, “dirty” guitars, besides growl, we can listen harsh vocal. Impressed are also bass parts, which have proud and determined entrance in this song.
Elements of folk stripped shortest ‘Shadow Reprise’ with pleasant pulling of the chords of acoustic and classic guitars and ‘The Mist’, with nice exhibition of low cello’s tones and sweet, delicate voice of Ian. We can’t forget also about percussion in these pieces, which matches to other instruments really great.
Our attention for sure should pay two the longest songs of the record, which are properly fantastic in full construction. Both excellently develop, carry enormous load of different emotions and absolutely couldn’t be shorter. It just would kill true beauty of these tracks. (Bow to the band that didn’t cut it brutally). ‘Hunting Season’- as the first of them- touches by sad, heart-rending vocal, “sulphurous” growl, full of pretensions, which drills within our remorse for bad deeds.
Lyric brings to mind many thoughts as well: “(..) We live, we breathe / But we are numb to life / (...) We carry a crushing weight / Our fear, our lust, and all our hate / (...) Music is very slow. Perfectly underlines serious atmosphere. Calm guitars cry silently or want to be a balm for all those sufferings. Instead ‘Through Greenest Meadows’ as suggest the title, kidnaps our souls to idyllic place, where rule peace and harmony.
On beginning invites us mild voice of Ian, which sounds clearly romantically. After nine minute we just are able to see these green meadows in front of our eyes and feel the smell of fresh grass. Minute by minute the song ripens and is severer.
Arise cold growl with melody in the style of deepest doom/death. As it was signalized higher, lyrics of My Silent Wake have many things to tell. In the song 'Shadow Of Sorrow' there is a calling of man who suffer in many different life’s ways and he is calling not to emptiness but to God, straightly out from the heart: “Oh Lord / I need to see you through my tears / Never let me lose hope / Lead me through, lead me on / lead me over the gates to a new tomorrow / (…) Oh Lord / On the edge of depths and despair / Never let me lose hope.”

This debut CD is excellent. The fans of Candlemass or early Anathema or Paradise Lost should be not disappointed.
