“Calling Down Fire” è il primo album della band australiana dei Rosanna’s Raiders, uscito originariamente nel 1987 per la Pure Metal ed ora ristampato insieme al resto della discografia dalla Retroactive Records in un elegante doppio CD.
Il primo lavoro del trio capitanato da Rosanna Palmer alla chitarra fa intravedere gli stessi pregi e difetti del Demotape “We Are Raiders”, ossia un’alternanza di brani efficaci ad altri che risuonano come pezzi di sfocato e poco interessante melodic rock.
Il disco fa segnalare un cambiamento alla batteria con l’entrata di Johno Zaffarese ma purtroppo è proprio la linea ritmica a restare un po’ l’aspetto in bilico, poco energica e presente, soprattutto il drumming. Al contrario il marito di Rosanna, ossia David, è ancora una volta incisivo e riesce atessere ottime linee con il proprio strumento, il basso.
Il disco alterna buone song energiche come l’opener ‘We Are Raiders’ (ripresa dalla Demotape “We Are Raiders”) o la conclusiva ‘Not Gonna Let You Go Again’ a ballad dolci e romantiche come ‘So Far Away’ che fa emergere tutta l’abilità di singer di Rosanna. Altro lento degno di nota è il drammatico ‘Inside Is Living Hell’, che vede anche l’inserimento del piano suonato da Gary Houston.
Da sottolineare poi l’ottimo artwork dell’opera che Boris Vallejo realizzò con l’immagine del fedele che alza le braccia a Dio (nell’artwork della raccolta della Retroactive Records, “Fire From Heaven”, le copertine dei due album della band vengono unite in un’unica illustrazione).
Di certo a vedere una cover del genere chiunque si sarebbe aspettato un album di epic metal, in linea con i secolari Manowar, Manilla road, o con i christian Emerald o Leviticus; in realtà il trio autraliano si mantiene per tutto il lavoro sulla stessa falsariga di un hard rock molto melodico ed a tratti eccessivamente semplicistico.
Anche i testi di questo disco si basano soprattutto sul sottolineare come Gesù sia sempre pronto a salvarci e di come spessi solo a noi accergerci del suo immenso amore, come predica la song ‘Good News’.
In definitiva anche “Calling Down Fire” risulta un’opera interessante a tratti ma non trascurabile.

"Calling Down Fire" is the first album of the australian band Rosanna’s Raiders; it was originally published in 1987 by Pure Metal label and now it has been reissued together with the full discography in a special double CD.
The first song of the band leaded by Rosanna Palmer, who is singer and guitarist, shows the same ups and downs already listened on the Demotape “We Are Raiders”, thus creating a mix of songs which are both nice and well composed, alternated with others with a shy and weak kind of melodic rock.
The new drummer, Johno Zaffarese, who replaced the old one, was an ill-fated choice because the rhythm resulted to have few energy and hardness. Beside really hard songs like the opener 'We Are Raiders' (taken from the homonym Demotape) or the last 'Not Gonna Let You Go Again', this work has got sweet and romantic ballads such as 'So Far Away' who shows all Rosanna’s voice power and skillfulness. Another good slow song is the dramatic and full of pathos 'Inside is Living Hell' in which the piano is played by Gary Houston.
Notable is the excellent cover artwork, made by Boris Vallejo, which shows the devote raising his arms to the sky towards God (in the reissued double CD “Fire From Heaven”, by Retroactive Records, the first two album’s covers are joined in a single picure).
Despite this kind of illustration, which can maybe lead to think to a genuine epic metal album made by Manowar, Manilla Road or by the christian bands Emerald or Leviticus, the australian trio plays a really melodic hard rock resulting sometimes too modest.
The main lyrics’ subject is that Jesus is always ready to save us and that we have got the owe to understand how deep is His love towards us, as in the 'Good News' song.
“Calling Down Fire” shows really good songs which forge a work that cannot be, for sure, neglected.
