SCHALIACH  "Sonrise"

La band degli Schaliach è formata da due membri ossia Ole Børud degli Extol e Peter Dalbekk, che suona anche nei Vardøger; la formazione ha iniziato la sua attività nel 1995 in Norvegia. Praticamente la band non esiste più da pochi anni ma ci ha lasciato un album davvero interessante da scoprire e che nostalgia ai molti fan del combo norvegese.
L’etichetta discografica Momentum Scandinavia ha pensato bene di editare nuovamente nel 2005 "Sonrise", uscito originariamente nel 1996 (per la Petroleum); nella nuova versione troviamo la bonus track ‘Purple Filter’, che non era mai stata pubblicata precedentemente.
Il sound della band è caratterizzato da un death metal molto sottile con una presenza di doom metal; ci sono infine anche delle influenze thrash. I testi, veramente riusciti, sono chiaramente fondati sulla fede cristiana.
Ad ascoltare le prime tracce del CD la musica ricorda molto a quella degli Extol degli esordi. ‘You Maintain’ per esempio sembra esser figlia diretta della canzone ‘Work Of Art’ dall’album “Burial”; l'unica vera differenza che notiamo è che il pezzo degli Schaliach è leggermente più veloce e manca il black scream. Ad ogni modo altri elementi come ad esempio la voce in stile death, una specifica dizione nelle parole cantate e qualche volta anche i riff di chitarra ci ricordano la canzone citata.
La bonus track ‘Purple Filter’ invece ci ricorda l’album, sempre degli Extol, “Undeceived”. Qui ci imbattiamo in chitarre energiche, una buona batteria e un meraviglioso scream in death metal style. Questo pezzo è davvero fresco e melodico e ancora ricorda molto altre cose della principale band di riferimento.
Invece nella traccia intitolata 'On A Different Day’ possiamo ascoltare maggiormente un chiaro influsso thrash; qui la voce di Peter assume un colore che ricorda quello dei Vengeance Rising o degli Once Dead.
Il brano è imperniato sul contrubuto della batteria, che qui èveramente veloce. Il testo del brano presenta il personale “Credo” degli artisti: “(…) His Name is Jesus (…) He is the Messiah / The Son of God, the Prince of peace / Sent down to earth to wash us clean from sin / So we can see the light of day / No matter what wrong you have done / He can forgive you from it all”.
Nella titletrack ‘Sonrise’ possiamo ascoltare delle sporche parti di chitarra che si interesecano con un bel riff pulito e degli scream di tipo death che si mescolano con una voce tipicamente thrash metal. Poi si impone anche la voce di Ole Børud. Il testo descrive la vicenda della Resurrezione e quindi dela liberazione di tutto il genere umano dalla morte: “(…) Sonrise / An empty grave / Only His garments were left / (…) The price is paid / Blood has been shared / (…) He bring us back / To the Author of Life / I am released from death”.
Un pezzo eccezionale è poi ‘A Father’s Mourning’, che raggiunge i dieci minuti di durata. Questa canzone presenta il lato doom dell’album. Sebbene ci siano delle tristi melodie di chitarra, possiamo incontrare anche dei lenti e brulicanti suoni di chitarra.
Il brano è caratterizzato anche da parti atmosferiche che si inseriscono nel momento culminante dell'esecuzione.
Le linee vocali sono quasi tutte pulite tranne alcuni parti in growl tipicamente death. Alcuni versetti del testo sono recitati ed in certi momenti si inserisce anche un delicato coro maschile.
Assolutamente meritevole è il testo, che parla dell’amore di Dio per l’uomo. Nelle liriche Lui è presentato come il Padre, che aspetta che il Suo figlio umano e sopporta un terribile dolore di abbandono, quale risultato dei peccati commessi. E' evidente il riferimento al peccato originale; ci ricorda della salvezza per mezzo della croce e del fatto che Dio ci ha riservato un posto in Paradiso: “I cried when you left home / I shed my tears alone / (…) We were so close, a father to son / But now you are gone / Please tell me why you had to leave me / I still wonder why / One thing I know, I will be waiting for your return /(…) Do you not believe I could still love you? / Well, I proved it on a cross / Don’t walk away / There is a room made for you / You belong to me / I still love you”.
Nel CD gli artisti propongono anche delle tracce strumentali. Tra queste molto bella è ‘In Memoriam’, dedicata a tutti i bambini uccisi dall’aborto. Poi anche ‘Coming Of A Dawn’ caratterizzata da un intro di pianoforte e dei buoni riff di chitarra.
“Sonrise” è dotato di una profonda carica cristiana e caratterizzato da una dolce musica, non sempre di stampo death metal, e suona davvero interessante sebbene non sia perfetto. Peccato che il gruppo abbia cessato di comporre... considerando anche che la bonus track ‘Purple Filter’ fa ben sperare per eventuali composizioni future.

Schaliach, formed by two members - Ole Børud from Extol and Peter Dalbekk, currently playing in Vardøger, was born in 1995 in Norway. Practically group doesn’t exist anymore from nice few years but left behind one album, worth to discover, and to which many fans back with some sentiment. The label Momentum Scandinavia noticed this fact well and for the pleasure of all these people, released reissue of the one and only cd of Schaliach “Sonrise” with completely new artwork and bonus track ‘Purple Filter’, previously never published.
The band’s stuff characterized very subtle death metal with doom, thrash influences and beauty lyrics, clearly founded on the christian faith. From the first tunes music deeply assimilates Extol from the great, early years of existence. ‘You Maintain’ for example is like a real “daughter” of the song ‘Work Of Art’ from “Burial”, with this one difference that it is a bit faster and miss the black scream. By the way other elements as death vocal, specific diction of the singing words and sometimes also guitar riffs remember mentioned composition.
Even more and more similar is ‘Purple Filter’, which totally recalls the album “Undeceived”. Energetic guitars, nice drums and wonderful death scream - this piece is so fresh and melodic; seems to be again one single track of Extol’s work.
Instead traces of thrash we’ll find in ‘On A Different Day’, where the Peter’s vocal takes more huskily color, alla’ Vengeance Rising or Once Dead. Then we have quickly percussion, which duly build the rhythmical part of the song. At last the lyric, which is like personal “Credo” of the artists: “(…) His Name is Jesus (…) He is the Messiah / The Son of God, the Prince of peace / Sent down to earth to wash us clean from sin / So we can see the light of day / No matter what wrong you have done / He can forgive you from it all”.
Not so bad mix of styles we’ll discover in ‘Sonrise’. Here interfere each other dirty tunes of guitars with nice, clean riffs and death scream with thrash harsh vocal. Somewhere appears also additional voice of Ole Børud. The text describes the fact of resurrection and in consequence liberation all mankind from death: “(…) Sonrise / An empty grave / Only His garments were left / (…) The price is paid / Blood has been shared / (…) He bring us back / To the Author of Life / I am released from death”.
Exceptional title is ‘A Father’s Mourning’, which lefts about ten minutes. This song exhibits well the doom’s roots of the album. Although sad melodies of lead guitar, we meet also slow, crawling guitar’s sound. Near the culmination moment adds some effects of pathetic background. Moreover all strophes are singing by clean vocal and only some words in death growl. Some verses are made in the way of recitation and others as a little, delicate male choirs. At the end we receive a really great, unique composition.
Absolutely worth to underline are the lyrics, which talk about love of God for man. In the text He is present as the Father, who awaits His human son, endure a terrible pain of abandonment as the result of committed sins. It sees refer to original sin, memory of salvation by the cross and prepared place for us in Heaven: “I cried when you left home / I shed my tears alone / (…) We were so close, a father to son / But now you are gone / Please tell me why you had to leave me / I still wonder why / One thing I know, I will be waiting for your return / (…) Do you not believe I could still love you? / Well, I proved it on a cross / Don’t walk away / There is a room made for you / You belong to me / I still love you”.
On the cd artists put also some instrumental tracks. Between the others very beautiful is ‘In Memoriam’, dedicated to all children killed by abortion. Then ‘Coming Of A Dawn’ with piano entrance and good guitar’s riffs.
The final effect of “Sonrise” is satisfied. The album with deep, christian charge and quite sweet music, no typical death metal in version “light” sounds interesting albeit not perfectly. Pity that group had to vanished and doesn’t continue. Especially miss their activity after so smack bonus like ‘Purple Filter’, which seemed to be any germ for great future.
