La band italiana Doomenicus si e’ formata nel 2000 e il leader di questa band e’ Domenico “Doomenicus” Caruso che canta, suona la tastiera e scrive anche i testi. Nel 2001 e’ stato rilasciato il suo primo progetto intitolato “Suffering Of Souls”. Era un DemoMCD con tre tracce. Ciascuna formata da piu’ di otto minuti di canzone. L’inizio della prima canzone 'Light A Candle' inizia con profondi e delicati suoni di tastiera per creare un atmosfera di riflessione e dignita’. Poi improvvisamente possiamo sentire un forte suono di chitarra che scorre lentamente accompagnata a bassa voce e pulita di Domenico Caruso. Anche la batteria tiene lo stesso tempo.
Nella traccia successiva intitolata 'My Last Hours' le chitarre sembrano lamentarsi e piangere. Soffici suoni di corda mescolati con suoni grezzi e severi. Durante la canzone c’e’ anche un piccolo momento di vivacita’. La melodia diventa per un breve lasso di tempo piu’ allegra ma poi ritorna a essere triste. Poi si inserisce il bellissimo riff di chitarra che si fa sentire rispetto a tutti gli altri strumenti. Insieme alle tastiera creano un’ottima musica delicata.
L’ultima canzone 'Prayer Is Only Way Out' mostra molti aspetti. Il suono della chitarra e’ piu’ forte in questa canzone rispetto alla prima e il suono e’ piu’ triste ed emozionante. Le tastiere creano un meraviglioso sfondo. Ogni suono della tastiera sembra una lacrima che cade in una profonda tristezza. Qualche volta i suoni ci ricordano quelli dell’organo in chiesa.
Accanto a queste parti affascinanti Domenico Caruso si arrampica sugli altopiani della sua creatività. La sua voce diventa piu’ lugubre, piena di dolore e raggiunge toni elevati. In alcuni punti la voce passa attraverso atmosfere di sussurri che da’ un senso di brezza fresca alla canzone e fornisce molte profonde emozioni all’ascoltatore.
Particolarmente qui e nel secondo titolo troveremo riff di chitarra molto interessanti, che spaziano dal lento all’heavy metal più veloce con toni piu’ elevati per poi ritornare come prima ai precedenti accordi. I riff si differenziano tra un modo e l’altro. Anche la batteria e’ qualche volta piu’ dinamica e cambia il ritmo.
Tutte le tracce mantengono un atmosfera di calma malinconia. La composizione e’ la caratteristica principale per le canzoni nei vari tipi di requiem. Tutte loro ricordano la marcia funebre. Anche i testi dei Doomenicus trattano di temi sul deperimento e sulla morte : “Finally the holy day has come / just to free myself / from the eternal sorrow / I close my eyes so slowly / (…) I feel I’m going away from this world / Waiting for my last breath / which will give me freedom.”
Ma la cosa piu’ importante è che tutte le canzoni trattano la morte secondo la concezione cristiana. La morte è solo una lacrima della vera vita immortale e ci pone fine al dolore e sofferenza ma non e’ la fine di tutto: “When your time will come / No one forget you / And your soul sees the light of Lord / Eternally!”
Questo messaggio cristiano è ancora più palese nella terza traccia: “ We’ll have a place / In the Heavenly Kingdom / Where darkness is not / And light brights / Eternally…“
Inoltre I testi ci parlano sulla forza della preghiera e sul rispetto nei confronti della morte: “I’ve been forgotten / (…) But if you’ll pray for me / I’ll be save! / Light a candle for me soul / Light a candle for me soul and pray for me.“
La band Doomenicus rappresenta la tipica scena doom funerea. La gente a cui piace questo tipo di musica che rassomiglia come influenze ai My Dying Bride o ai Candlemass dovrebbe rimanerne sorpresa. Consiglio questo album anche ai fans dei Morphia, dei Virgin Black, dei My Silent Wake, degli Ashen Mortality o dei Visionaire come interessante esperienza di una piccola e leggera e piu’ delicata parte del doom metal.

The italian band Doomenicus has formed in 2000 and the “main head” of this group is the person of Domenico “Doomenicus” Caruso who sings, plays keyboards and also writes lyrics. In the year 2001 was released first project called “Suffering Of Souls”. It was DemoMCD with three tracks.
Everyone of them takes more than eight minutes. The beginning of the first song 'Light A Candle' opens deep, delicate sounds of keyboard for create atmosphere of reflection and dignity. Then suddenly we can hear strong guitar’s beat which flows slowly and follow us to low, clean vocal of Domenico Caruso. Also the drums hold the same monotone tempo.
In the next track called 'My Last Hours' guitars seem to complain and weeping. Soft pulls of chords join with the severe raw sounds. During the song is also a little piece of brightness. Melody becomes for some short while more happy but after it returns to sorrow again. Then enters beautiful guitar’s riff which is the highest between all the others. Together with keyboard create just excellent tender music.
The last song 'Prayer Is Only Way Out' shows many horizons. The beat of guitar is stronger here than in the first title The sound is more grim and affecting. Keyboards create wonderful background. Every touch of the keys it seems to be one falling tear in deep regret. Sometimes sounds of it bring on mind organ at church. Next to this enchanted parts Domenico Caruso climbs on the uplands of own creativity. His voice becomes more mournful, just really full of pain and reaches a little higher tones.
In some places the vocal passes through atmospheric whisper which puts fresh breeze on the song and gives many profound emotions to the listener. Particularly here and in the second title we will find many interesting guitar’s riffs, which go from slow and heavy to faster and higher parts until will come back to the previous accords. The riffs make often differences from each other. Also the drums are sometimes more dynamic and change the rhythm.
All tracks maintain oneself in calm melancholic atmosphere. Composition is characteristic to songs in type of requiem. Every of them remember the funeral march. Also the lyrics of Doomenicus considers the themes about fading and death: “Finally the holy day has come / just to free myself / from the eternal sorrow / I close my eyes so slowly / (…) I feel I’m going away from this world / Waiting for my last breath / which will give me freedom.” But the most important is that all songs treat the death in christian conception. Death is only a tore to true immortal life and gives the end only for pains and suffering but isn’t the final of everything: “When your time will come / No one forget you / And your soul sees the light of Lord / Eternally!”
This christian message is clearest in third song in particular: “We’ll have a place / In the Heavenly Kingdom / Where darkness is not / And light brights / Eternally… “
Moreover lyrics talk about power of prayers and respect for the dead: “I’ve been forgotten / (…) But if you’ll pray for me / I’ll be save! / Light a candle for me soul / Light a candle for me soul and pray for me.“
Doomenicus represents typical pure funeral doom scene. People who like music influenced by this kind of groups as My dying bride or Candlemass should be nice surprised. I can recommend this project also to fans of Morphia, Virgin Black, My Silent Wake, Ashen Mortality or Visionaire like interesting experience of a little soft and more delicate side of doom metal.
