Dietro il lavoro dei norvegesi Roots Of Tragedy si cela un uomo – David Sandvick. Questi ha suonato in passato nella band Sjelehoest e quando questa ha cessato di esistere, il musicista ha ricominciato con una nuova formazione. Nel 2006 ha prodotto il suo primo DemoMCD intitolato “Awakening Beyond” . Il lavoro include quattro canzoni in stile death/doom, ma ci sono anche alcune parti black e gothic metal.
Il disco inizia con la canzone ‘Invitation Of The Ark Of Blood’.
Inizialmente possiamo sentire la melodia delle chitarre che emerge da un abisso profondo che si spinge verso zone ignote. Poi si inserisce la voce in stile black metal e la chitarra assume toni più elettrici. La voce nella canzone è molto bassa e profonda, quasi come il gelo del freddo invernale. Nella canzone incontriamo anche una bassa voce pulita ma in piccole dosi, come se fosse uno spettro.
La seconda canzone, ‘The Unborn (Abortion Day)’, è un vero capolavoro. Qui troviamo melodie molto interessanti. La violenza si scontra in maniera incredibile con la delicatezza. Musicalmente il pezzo è molto diverso dal precedente. La canzone inizia con dei suoni che ricordano un elicottero. In sottofondo possiamo ascoltare anche delicati passaggi di tastiera e una breve parte recitata. Poi all’improvviso tutto viene lacerato da uno scream tenebroso, che ci porta verso dei suoni brutal/black/death.
Le linee vocali sono accompagnate dalla batteria e da un suono di chitarra molto profondo. I suoni della batteria si fanno più vividi e i tempi sono molto veloci. Le tastiere creano anche un'oscura atmosfera e cambiano ogni volta la melodia, passando da suoni delicati ad altri molto più aggressivi e toccanti. La voce si bilancia tra il growl e gli scream di tipo black. Inoltre spesso la musica si fa più tranquilla e l’ascoltatore può sentire dei bisbigli o sussurri a fronte di malinconiche tonalità donate dalle corde della chitarra; infine si incontrano suoni mistici di tastiere.
Il lugubre riverbero che segue ai bisbigli citati precedentemente ritorna di nuovo anticipando la linea vocale.
La traccia successiva, ‘The Plague And The Divine’, inizia con un stridulo suono di chitarra e i suoni si fanno più sobri e severi. Il mood della musica così "forte" viene smussato grazie alla melodia delle tastiere e dei calorosi temi melodici di ritornelli, cantati con un growl tenebroso da David.
L’ultima canzone, intitolata ‘Rise Of The Machine’, ha un suono ancora molto lugubre che ricorda in piccola parte lo stile degli Antestor presente nei primi CD. A differenza della canzone precedente, qui la tastiera non riscalda assolutamente la melodia ma la rende più tetra. Anche i toni della chitarra e della voce sono chiaramente più bassi e creano una strana, mistica atmosfera.
Intorno al terzo minuto della canzone ci appare una bella, malinconica voce pulita, che si armonizza magnificamente con tutta l’oscurità del brano.
Per quanto riguarda i testi i Roots Of Tragedy parlano dei problemi che colpiscono l’animo umano ed anche delle grandi lotte spirituali, esprimendo pienamente il significato delle tenebre e dei dolori: “See the light / Wipe your tears / Life beyond / Save us / Taken and throwned away / Then it have nothing to say / Structure of failure."
Una canzone descrive molto bene una di queste battaglie contro il male. Possiamo ascoltare queste parole: “One by one they stand their ground / The weapons they use is the truth / Brothers and sisters is standing tall / Waiting for the plague to fall / Once again the plague must end (…)”.
Merita attenzione la canzone ‘The Unborn’, che affronta direttamente un serio e difficile problema nel mondo, l’aborto: “Pregnant, with a child to carry / She lies in her bed for rest / The devil is showing her a look into future / Showing the misery / All the pain and agony / The child must bleed / If you want to succeed”. L’autore parla della crudeltà dell’aborto e sottolinea chiaramente che è una bestia l’assassino di un bambino innocente e sembra richiamare la nostra attenzione affinchè finisca questa malvagità: ”Like a lamb in the season of youth / So innocent and pure / No harm, to do / Where is this going / This killing of man / A poor lost / No change for defense / You have to stop before you self goes by / Unborn to this world”.
Nella musica dei Roots Of Tragedy c’è qualcosa di speciale che attrae e che non si dà pace. Questo stile di death melodico e soffuso dovrebbe essere apprezzato specialmente dai fan di gruppi come Antestor, Vaakevandring, Bleakwail e da tutti coloro ai quali piacciono le basse e oscure tonalità del genere doom metal.

Behind the norwegian project Roots Of Tragedy hides one man – David Sandvik. He played before in the band called Sjelehoest and when it finished activity, he started with a new formation. In the year 2006 he releases his first DemoMCD under the title “Awakening Beyond”. The demo includes four songs in death/doom style, where are also some pieces of black and gothic.
The record opens the song ‘Invation Of The Ark Of Blood’. On beginning we can hear calm, melancholic guitar, which emerges from some kind of far abyss and is drifting to unknown tracts. Then enters black vocal and the guitar takes more electric tones. The voice in this track is properly deep and very low. Just freezes by winter’s cold. During the song we will meet also short clean vocal but it appears rarely as a spectre. Anyway put for ears of listeners nice resolution.
Second title ‘The Unborn (Abortion Day)’ is a true masterpiece on this record. Here are many interesting melodies. Violence collides incredibly with delicacy. Musically exactly this position is very diverse. The song starts with sounds which remember a helicopter.
In the background we can listen also delicate keyboards and short recitation. Then suddenly everything is tearing apart by the dark scream, which bring us to brutal black- death reality. Behind the vocal arm by arm go rhythmic drums and low guitar. The bass drum is clear and very quick in the tempo. Dark atmosphere creates the keyboards too, which change the melody from delicate to aggressive and more touched. Voice balances between growl and black scream. When the music calms listener can hear silent whisper in front of the sad tones of pulling guitar’s strings, and after it, mystic chords of keyboards and sounds of moving water. Later melody is more pathetic. The grim reverberation after whisper returns again to the previews vocal.
Next track ‘The Plague And The Divine’ begins by the shrill sound of guitar and it seems that the chords scratch our hearing and are severe. However the music is smoothed through the keyboards and warm, melodic theme of refrain, sung by the dark growl of David. The last position under the title ‘Rise Of The Machine’ is very grim in sound. Remember a little style of Antestor from the first CDs. In opposite to the preview song, here keyboard absolutely doesn’t heats the melody but just makes it more dusky. Also the guitar and vocal are clearly low and creates strange, mystic atmosphere. Around the third minute of the track appears beautiful, melancholic clean vocal, which matches magnificently to all the darkness.
Lyrically Roots Of Tragedy talks about problems which are happening within the souls of men, about spiritual struggles with wide in meaning darkness and sorrow: “See the light / Wipe your tears / Life beyond / Save us / Taken and throwned away / Then it have nothing to say / Structure of failure.”
One title just properly describes one of these battles against evil. We can hear: “One by one they stand their ground / The weapons they use is the truth / Brothers and sisters is standing tall / Waiting for the plague to fall / Once again the plague must end (…)”.
Worth to pay attention is the song ‘The Unborn’ in particular, which directly strikes in serious and difficult problem of the world – abortion: “Pregnant, with a child to carry / She lies in her bed for rest / The devil is showing her a look into future / Showing the misery / All the pain and agony / The child must bleed / If you want to succeed”.
The writer presents here cruelty of abortion and underlines clearly that it’s the beastly murder of the innocent child and just seems to call for give the end of this kind of evil: ”Like a lamb in the season of youth / So innocent and pure / No harm, to do / Where is this going / This killing of man / A poor lost / No change for defense / You have to stop before you self goes by / Unborn to this world”.
Inside the music of Roots Of Tragedy there’s something special what attracts and can’t give peace. Clearly it feels that wants to be discover piece by piece every sound. This black and melancholic landscape with elements of sensitive melody should be appreciated especially by the fans of groups like Antestor, Vaakevandring, Bleakwail and just by everyone who likes low, dark chords of doom.
