Alla fine del 2007 nella sua opera di riscoperta e rilancia di band christian metal anni ’80 la Retroactive Records ristampa in un doppio CD intitolato “Fire From Heaven” tutta la discografia degli australiani Rosanna’s Raiders, che comprende il Demotape del 1985 “We Are Raiders”, e i due LP “Calling Down Fire” (1987) e “Clothed In Fire” (1988) usciti originariamente per la Pure Metal.
Qui parliamo della prima opera dei nostri, ossia “We Are Raiders”, che in realtà è un album vero e proprio che non uscì mai per nessuna etichetta dell’epoca; quindi è ancor più interessante l’inserimento di questo lavoro, una vera “chicca” sconosciuta del passato.
I Rosanna’s Raiders erano un terzetto agguerrito di ottimo hard rock melodico che può ricordare le Heart o i Petra. La band era capitanata da Rosanna Palmer alla voce e chitarra, affiancata dal marito David al basso e dall’amico Henry Leszynski alla batteria (in questa release almeno).
Notiamo come questa versione della Retroactive Records contenga anche ‘One Man’, una song scritta apposta dalla band per un compilation intitolata “One Man” e dedicata a Stewe Rowe, il leader dei Mortification. Il pezzo è l’unico presente nella compilation che non sia una cover dei Mortification e che i Rosanna’s Raiders hanno scritto proprio per Steve; il pezzo è molto diretto e potente, decisamente accattivante ed in linea con le cose più veloci ed aggressive dei nostri.
La Demotape inizia invece con ‘We Are Raiders’, un’opener perfetta, una cavalcata di metal melodico in cui troviamo già come cavallo da battaglia la voce di Rosanna e la sua chitarra. Veramente riuscita è anche la successiva ‘Reflections’, decisamente più hard rokkeggiante, che lascia spazio al basso di David, che sottolinea in modo egregio le melodie portanti della song. In questo pezzo si sente anche la tastiera di Garry Sheperd, che rende ancora più dolci i passaggi di chitarra.
Dopo queste prime ottime song ci sono due pezzi un po’ stucchevoli come ‘When You Woke Up This Morning’ e ‘Spotlight’ in cui, soprattutto nella seconda song citata, le melodie si fanno troppo semplici e quasi pop ed a tratti insopportabili.
Si ritorna sulla giusta carreggiata con ‘You Are My Rock’, un bel pezzo di rock arrembante, che inzia con un buon assalto di chitarra e si apre a una melodia riuscitissima di Rossa alla voce, ben sottolineata dalla tastiera.
I Rosanna’s Raiders fin dagli esordi fan capire di non essere una band di qualità superiore ma riescono comunque spesso a colpire l’ascoltatore con brani di inaspettato valore e ritorno emozionale. Questo è ancor più meritevole per questa releaese in quanto autoprodotta e realizzata non con grandi fondi a disposizione.
Segnaliamo ancora ‘Hiding Behind Closed Doors’, pezzo che inzia con un ottimo riff di chiatarra di Rosanna e si trasforma ben presto in un ottimo hit di rock melodico; rimane sempre la caratteristica dell’uso delle tastiere tipico di metà anni ’80, ossia molto contorno e un po’ elementare, tipico del pop.
I testi di Rosanna poi sono tutti totalmente dedicati all’evangelizzazione, al trasmettere la speranza della salvezza in Cristo, a cominciare da un testo evidente come ‘You Are My Rock’. In definitiva “We Are Raiders” è un buon lavoro che alterna brani più interessanti ad alcuni “riempitivi” abbastanza insipidi ma val la pena di essere scoperto, fermo restando la linea ritmica non certo energica e un sound decisamente discutibile.

By the end of 2007, Retroactive Records label started to rediscover and to reissue Christian metal bands of the ‘80s. Among the bands, it has been issued a double-CD, named “Fire from Heaven” including the whole discography of the australian band Rosanna’s Raiders, which was made up by the Demotape “We Are Raiders”, issued in 1985, and the two LPs “Calling Down Fire” (1987) and “Clothed In Fire” (1988), formerly issued by Pure Metal label.
First Demotape is, indeed, a real full album; “We are Raiders” in fact it was self produced by the band itself, so what make this double-cd more interesting is the issue of this little unknown jewel.
Rosanna’s Raiders were a well gifted melodic hard rock band which remembers Heart or Petra. Leader of the band was Rosanna Palmer who was singer and guitarist, then her husband David on bass guitar and their friend Henry Leszynski on the drums (just for this work).
In this double-CD, Retroactive Records included also a song 'One Man' originally composed for the compilation “One Man” and dedicated to Steve Rowe, leader of Mortification. This was the only non-cover song of that compilation and Rosanna’s Raiders wrote it just for Steve; it’s a very straight and strong, really catchy and close to the faster and more aggressive songs by Rosanna's Raiders. First song of the demotape is 'We Are Raiders', a good melodic metal song in which is highlighted the excellent Rosanna’s voice and guitar. The following song is 'Reflections', more hard rock oriented, in which the bass exalts the main melodic themes. Piano, played by Garry Sheperd, is used in this song to sweeten the guitar bridges.
The worst part of the album is embodied by the next two songs, 'When You Woke Up This Morning' and 'Spotlight' because of their simple melodies, almost like pop songs and sometimes unsightly.
With 'You Are my Rock' the band comes back to a strong hard rock which starts with a real good guitar solo before the splendid harmonious Rosanna’s voice, well highlighted by the piano.
Even though they not appear to be an everlasting hard rock band, Rosanna’s Raiders hit the listener with really nice songs and special moods. Thence giving more merit to this band who self produced the album.
Another attempt of well played melodic hard rock is 'Hiding Behind Closed Doors', which starts with an excellent guitar’s riff. Band goes on with the use of keyboards, used in pop music of those years, very simple just to contour the song.
Rosanna’s lyrics are totally dedicated to evangelize, to communicate the hope for salvation by means of Jesus Christ, as can be observed in 'You Are my Rock'.
Finally “We Are Raiders” is a real good work which mix beautiful hard rock songs with others unsuccessful filling songs, which earned the right to be listened although the sometimes weak sound.
