Autori di un primo DemoMCD intitolato "Thrusting Plagues" i belgi Blood Drift rappresentano un'interessante realtà all'inizio della propria carriera nel panorame estremo cristiano. Li conosciamo per HolySteel con l'aiuto di tutta la band, composta rispettivamente da Aris Tarlizos (chitarra, voce), Elias De Vuyst (chitarra), Matthias Soberon (voce), Korneel Debaene (batteria) e Otis Tarlizos (basso).

Potete presentarci i Blood Drift?
Matt: "I Blood Drift sono una band death metal belga; abbiamo fondato il gruppo nell' estate del 2006."
Abbiamo iniziato in quattro. Io canto. Aris suona la chitarra e canta. Elias suona la chitarra e Korneel la batteria. Circa due mesi fa Otis è entrato come bassista.
Aris: "Suoniamo un potente death metal decisamente vario, con influenze di un metal di tipo tecnico e black metal, procurando così un messaggio cristiano diverso."

La scorsa estate avete rilasciato il vostro DemoMCD, "Thrusting Plagues". Che è successo prima?
Matt: "Abbiamo fondato due band che si sono divise. E abbiamo avuto subito un ingaggio, così che abbiamo iniziato in quel momento a scrivere ed eseguire molte canzoni insieme. Nei mesi successivi abbiamo perfezionato alcuni pezzi e scritto nuove track; inoltre abbiamo suonato in un paio di date dal vivo."
Aris: "Infatti abbiamo iniziato a essere piuttosto produttivi, con tutto ciò che era necessario. Più tardi abbiamo sempre riflettuto sul nostro materiale e abbiamo preso delle canzoni dalla nostra lista di song che non si adattavano: il modo con cui ti procuri un’ora dalla tua vita la puoi riempire di metal di alta qualità ah ah."
Korneel: "Un sacco di canzoni che sono state prodotte non erano buone abbastanza dall’essere inserite nel DemoMCD."

Avete avuto trovato qualche difficoltà durante il processo di creazione musicale? Oppure il tutto è stato più semplice di come ve lo aspettavate?
Matt:"Personalmente posso solo parlare dei testi, dato che, ad essere onesto, non ho un vero input musicale nei Blood Drift. Scrivere testi è qualcosa che può essere veloce in quel momento, ma non in un altro. Devo sentirmi veramente bene per lavorare sulle lyrics.
Aris: "Quando io e Matt eravamo nello studio per registrare le voci abbiamo contato tre giorni: due giorni per registrare le voci e un giorno per scrivere i testi! Abbiamo scritto in un giorno una buona song e secondo me una fantastica compilation di testi, che e’ completamente basata sulla Bibbia."
Elias: "Scrivere la musica diventa più difficile nei Blood Drift alla fine, soprattuto ora che vogliamo fare progressi e vogliamo cercare di raggiungere un più elevato livello qualitativo nella nostra prossima uscita. Comunque ciò non significa che sia un lavoro meno piacevole da compiere."


L’anno scorso alcuni di voi hanno iniziato una nuova carriera di studio, per il resto la vostra vita sta andando bene. E’ difficile combinare la band con le altre vostre attività ?
Matt: "Si e no; in questo momento è ancora tutto possibile, con studi più difficili da portare avanti, una band e con www.jesusmetal.com (ottimo sito di christian metal di proprietà di Matt, nr di Leonardo) non posso certo iniziare ulteriori attività. Ho suonato per un po’ in una seconda band, ma ho subito notato che fra le altre cose che il mio tempo a disposizione non bastava più."
Aris: "Io sono incredibilmente occupato, veramente! A essere onesti Blood Drift è la mia unica occupazione musicale. Mi sono sposato (settembre 2007) e ho iniziato a studiare seriamente. Non voglio fare dei progetti futuri per chiarire le cose! Ma avrò sempre del tempo libero per i Blood Drift!"
Korneel: "Da quanto tutti noi, per lo meno coi nostri studi, siamo nella stessa situazione, abbiamo creato l’abitudine di fare della settimana un tuttuno coi giorni feriali. Questo è veramente bello per l’ispirazione e la sfera del gruppo. Durante l’anno accademico noi non abbiamo tempo e i giorni di vacanza li dedichiamo ai Blood Drift."

Qual è il commento più positivo che avete ricevuto per la vostra musica?
Matt: "Ehm, bella domanda; io personalmente sono lieto quando la gente mi fa i complimenti sulla qualità della voce. Io ero molto compiaciuto di quello che ha detto Pål dei Frosthardr: “Questi ragazzi potrebbero essere i prossimi leader dell’ultra brutal metal.”
Aris: "Hmmm!? Presto attenzione a ciò che ha detto Matt… Qualche volta non penso che siano veri. Mi piace quando la gente viene da noi dopo una data con certi ritornelli che potevano ricordare e trovare belli ecc… O la gente che dice che l’atmosfera durante le date sono favolose. O quando le nuove canzoni piacciono molto! Questi sono i miei preferiti!"
Korneel: "Il miglior commento secondo me è una nota critica, che mi dice anche in che cosa potrei migliorare. Non riesco a ricordarne una in particolare, ma è una di quelle."


Volete trasmettere qualcosa con la vostra musica, o volete solo fare della buona musica? Perché?
Matt: "Per fare della buona musica, ci si deve divertire MOLTO con i membri della propria band, suonare su un palco, vedere la gente divertirsi, questa è la base per me. Poi quello che viene dopo è che i nostri testi sono ispirati al mondo. Per favore guardate che il mio obiettivo non è convertire la gente con la musica. Io scrivo solo testi coi quali mi sento bene e coi quali posso pormi con zelo."
Aris: "Noi scriviamo i testi, tutto qua. Credo che Dio li userà al momento giusto, anche nelle nostre vite, come avvertimento o supporto…
Musicalmente proviamo solo a fare della buona musica per quanto sia possibile."
Elias: "Per me è prima di tutto importante scrivere della bella e nuova musica. Accanto a questo i nostri testi sono ispirati dalla Bibbia, ciò non significa che la nostra visione è di fare della musica, che è solo significativa per i cristiani."


Che influenze avete avuto per la maggior parte nel creare la musica?
Matt: "Birra! Haha. Io prendo spunto per la maggior parte ascoltando le altre band di death metal, ma anche la musica country come Johnny Cash o la musica classica e la world music. Tutto ciò che può risvegliare emozioni in me, dall’aggressività alla speranza. Alla fine è “la vita che vivi” la più importante ispirazione."
Aris: "Io ascolto un sacco di musica. Per i Blood Drift traiamo un grosso spunto dai Nile e dagli Extol secondo me e anche dagli stessi riff di Elias. Noi proviamo il brutal, il melodico anche un pò di epic qualche volta e cerchiamo di essere innovativi."
Korneel: "I riff di Elias sono il fattore principale di produzione dato che poi influenzano la sezione della batteria. Inoltre il mio modo di pensare riguardo il ritmo musicale è nella maggior parte influenzato dalla musica che ascolto un sacco in un dato periodo; insomma interessanti riempimenti che ascolto quà e là. Non perdo mai di vista ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno per creare musica esplosiva. Per me sono importanti band come Extol, Necrophagist, Nile… ma può anche trattarsi di musica classica. Anche tutto ciò che ci circonda può giocare un ruolo nello scrivere la musica."


C’è qualcosa che volete aggiungere per questa intervista?
Matt: "Voglio solo dire che gli altri membri dei Blood Drift sono i migliori che ci siano in questa band. E che la birra è grandiosa."
Aris: (Birra belga! Matt ho ragione? E, sicuramente, il formaggio Francese!) Io voglio dire anche io qui, senza diventare tutti gay, che non vorrei i Blood Drift senza Korneel, Elias, Matt o anche Otis! Voglio mettere anche mio fratello Otis nel gruppo, e lo ringrazio per tutto quello che ha fatto nei Blood Drift – lui è il mio assistente di produzione e ha aiutato a mixare e registrare Thrusting Plagues, io non potevo farlo senza di lui – e per tutto quello che lui fa nella band al momento. Otis ha imparato a suonare il basso in un mese per i Blood Drift e ha suonato in una data che è stata un successo; spacca di brutto! Matt: "Birra belga, scusate . Authors of a first DemoMCD entitled "Thrusting Plagues" the belgian Blood Drift are an interesting reality in the cheristian extreme metal scene. We can know them for HolySteel thanks to all the band, composed by Aris Tarlizos (guitar, vocals), Elias De Vuyst (guitar), Matthias Soberon (vocals), Korneel Debaene (drums) e Otis Tarlizos (bass).

Can you tell something about yourself and Blood Drift?
Matt: "Blood Drift is a death metal band from Belgium, we are founded in the summer of 2006. We are started as quartet. I sing, Aris plays the guitar and sings, Elias plays the guitar and Korneel drums. About two months ago Otis joined as bass player."

Last summer you released your DemoMCD "Thrusting Plagues". What happened before that?
Matt: "We are founded out of two bands who split up earlier. And we had a gig immediately, so that meant that we started at that very moment with writing and repeting many songs together. Throughout the months we perfected some songs and wrote new songs, and we played a couple of gigs."
Aris: "Indeed, we started rather productive, with the necessary. Afterwards have we always reflected on our material and we took the tracks which didn’t fit from our playlist: that way you get a life hour filled with high quality metal."
Korneel: "A big lot of tracks which are found not good enough to be released on demoMCD."

Have you experienced something in the process of making music and putting it on an album which as difficult? Or otherwise, as easier than you expected?
Matt: "Personally I can only speak about the lyrics, since I don’t have a real musical input in Blood Drift to be honest. Writing lyrics is something which can go very fast at the one moment, and totally not at the other. I really have to be in the right mood to work on lyrics."
Aris: "When Matt and I were in the studio to record the vocals, we counted three days: two days to record the vocals and óne day to write the lyrics on forehand! We wrote in óne day a good, and in my opinion great lyric-compilation, which is completely based on the Bible."
Elias: "To make music becomes more difficult in Blood Drift in the end, which is since we also want to make progress and want to and will reach a higher level at the next release. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s less pleasant to do."


Last year some study’s are started, the rest of your life is going on as well. Is it hard to combine the band with your other activities?
Matt: "Yes and no; at this moment it’s all still possible, with higher studies, a band and with www.jesusmetal.com (the christian metal website of Matt, nr by Leonardo), but I can’t start with more activities. I have played in a second band for a while, but noticed very soon that among other things my time got rather tight."
Aris: "I’m unbelievable busy, really! To be honest, Blood Drift is my only musical occupation. I’m just married (september 2007) and also began my higher studies. I don’t have to make a drawing to make things clear! But I’ll always make some free time for Blood Drift!"
Korneel: "Since we all, at least with our studies, are in the same situation, we created the habit to repete a week in a whole in the holidays. This is really good for the inspiration ánd the group sphere. During the academic year we lack time, and in the holidays I like to make time for Blood Drift."

What is the most positive comment you received for your music?
Matt: "Ehm, good question; for me personally I’m glad when people give me compliments about the quality of the vocals. I was ook very pleased as well with a saying by Pål from Frosthardr: “These guys could very well be the next leaders of ultra brutal metal.”
Aris: "Hmmm!? I am carefull with those sayings like Matt just quoted... Sometimes I don’t think they’re real, worthy. I like when people come to us after a gig themselves with certain riffs they can remember and found cool etc… Or people who say that the atmosphere during the gigs is fabulous. Or when the new songs are liked very much! Those are my very favorite ones!"
Korneel: "The best comment is in my opinion a crytical note, which also tells my what we can do better. I can’t really think of one, but it is one of those."


Do you want to carry something out with our music, or do you only want to make good music? Why?
Matt: "To make good music, have much fun with the members, to play on a podium, to see people enjoy themselves, that’s the basic for me. Next to that comes the fact that our lyrics are inspired by the Word. Please see that my goal isn’t to convert people with music. I Just write lyrics with which I feel good and which I can bring with zeal."
Aris: "We write the lyrics, and that’s it. I beleive that God will use them at the right moments, also in our own lives, like warning or support… Musically we just try to make as good music as possible, and we manage."
Elias: "For me personally it is at first important to write good, renewing music. Besides taht our lyrics are inspired by the Bible, what doesn’t mean our vision is to make music, which is only meant for christians."


What influences you the most by the making of your music?
Matt: "Beer! Haha. I get influences mostly by listening to other death metal bands, but also bhy music like Johnny Cash or classical music, and by the world. Everything which can wake emotions in me, from agression to hope. In the end is ‘the life you live’ the most important inspiration."
Aris: "I listen a lot to music at all. For Blood Drift are Nile and Extol rather big influences for me, and also Elias’ riffs themselves. We try brutal, melodic, even a little epic sometimes and to be innovative."
Korneel: "Elias' riffs are the making factor in what the drumsection will do. Further more my ritmical-musical thinking is mostly influenced by music to which I listen a lot in the given period, interesting fills I hear here and there. I always keep in eye that there need to be enough blastbeats in the music."
Elias: "Off course, with the writing of music there’s an influence from other bands. (for me it are bands Extol, Necrophagist, Nile...) But that can also be classical music. Also the surrounding can play a role in the writing of music."


Is there something else you want to note in this interview?
Matt: "I just want to share that the other members of Blood Drift are the best to be with in a band. And that beer is awesome."
Aris: "(belgian beer! Matt gast…?! And, of course, french cheese!) I also want to say here, without going all-gay, that I wouldn’t want Blood Drift without Korneel, Elias, Matt ór even Otis! Also I want to put my brother Otis éxtra in the picture, and thank him for everything what he already did in Blood Drift – he is my studioassistent and helped to mix and master "Thrusting Plagues", I couldn’t do it without him – and all which he does along in the band right now. Otis learned to play the bass in one month for Blood Drift ánd played along in a successfull gig; beat that!"
