American Power Metal Kings!

Dopo il capolavoro intitolato "Hell Destroyer" la band statunitense dei Cage ritorna con un nuovo album, "Science Of Annihilation", un vero terremoto che potrebbe distruggere tutto il metal satanico di questo mondo. Più veloci che ma i Cage in questa nuova release spingo veramente al massimo le loro abilità, realizzando un lavoro tutto da scoprire... con l'aiuto del cantante Sean...che ci parlerà anche dei messaggi presenti nelle song e del tour europeo con attenzione in particolare per la partecipazione al festival di metal cristiano Elements Of Rock.

Il vostro nuovo album “Science Of Annihilation” a livello stilistico porta avanti il discorso di classic heavy metal intrapreso con “Hell Destroyer” e “Darker Than Black”. Cosa vi aspettate da questo nuovo lavoro?

"E' bello incontrare ancora la vostra webmagazine HolySteel! Questo nuovo album è stato davvero interesante da realizzare per diversi motivi; intanto abbiamo un nuovo drummer nella persona di Norm Leggio che ha militato negli Psychotic Waltz e inoltre ci siamo trovati davvero in un periodo molto produttivo mentre componevamo le nuove canzoni. Ci aspettiamo che questo album venga visto come un tentativo di spingere il power metal ai suoi limiti ancor di più. Io sono per primo un metal fan e mi aspetto che un CD di metal sia sempre un capolavoro per l'head banging che le persone abbiano piacere ad ascoltare in continuazione negli anni a venire."

Una notizia molto interessante che vi interessa per questo 2009 è legata alla realizzazione di un tour europeo. Proprio tu, Sean, in occasione della nostra prima intervista, mi dicevi che è veramente difficile programmare un tour in Europa. Questo significa che tutto quanto sta andando nella giusta direzione per i Cage?

"E' divertente perchè da quando ci siamo creati la nostra personale etichetta discografica con la creazione di HEavy Metal Media siamo anche riusciti a programmare il nostro primo vero tour europeo. Dobbiamo ringraziare per questo sia Music By Mail che ArtistWorxxx per il loro apporto cruciale. Ora che siamo meglio organizzati penso proprio che in Europa arriveremo anche nei prossimi anni. Siamo molto eccitati per questo tour e siamo ansiosi di proporre i nostri nuovi pezzi."

Una tappa importante di questo tour è l'Elements Of Rock in Svizzera, forse il festival di christian metal più importante d'Europa. Cosa vi aspettate da questo evento?

"Ad essere onesto sono un po' nervoso. Noi siamo tutti cristiani, come sai... e questo è il nostro primo festival di christian metal. Io voglio abbracciare completamente quest'evento e lo Spirito che lo muove. Io ho una storia particolare in questo senso e voglio portarla ad esempio in questa sede anche per i non credenti. Io e mia moglie abbiamo avuto un incontro con uno spirito nella nostra casa in San Diego.
L'abbiamo visto entrambi, non è stata un'illusione. Se ci sono davvero spiriti questi devono andare da qualche parte e questo luogo è il regno di Dio. Così per chi sta leggendo e ritiene necessaria una dimostrazione empirica per la Fede, beh lasciatemi affermare che senza dubbio l'anima esiste.
Noi siam tutti onorati del fatto di partecipare all'Elements Of Rock quest'anno. "Hell Destroyer" è stato un CD speciale per noi e ci ha fatto scoprire quanto siano appassionati i fan del christian metal"

Su "Hell Destroyer" per la prima volta avete iniziato a scrivere testi con messaggi cristiani. Ora in “Science Of Annihilation”, se non sbaglio, c'è una sola canzone con un messaggio cristiano diretto, ossia ‘Power Of A God’. Possiamo quindi ancora considerare questo nuovo lavoro come un album di christian metal? Vedo che nel booklet, nella sezione dei ringraziamenti, quasi tutti ringraziano prima di tutto Dio e Gesù così non avrei dubbi in merito...

"Sapevo che avrei dovuto rispondere della natura di "Science OF Annihilation" e del suo messaggio. Devo dire che il primo obiettivo nello scrivere queste nuove canzoni è stato di creare delle classiche song di metal con "classiche" tematiche metal per un divertente ed eccellente head banging! Nonostante la "luce" sia più che mai presente per i Cage in questo album non ci sono messaggi cristiani diretti nei pezzi. Volevamo infatti distaccarci un po' da "Hell Destroyer" in questo senso; di conseguenza è più un disco in cui compaiono soprattutto storie di science fiction. Detto questo tutti i fan del christian metal non devono avere dubbi sul fatto che noi camminiamo sempre con Dio. Posso aggiungere che stiamo scrivendo già i brani per il prossimo album che uscirà nel 2010 in cui saranno presenti diversi ospiti alla voce e nei nostri piani c'è una canzone christian davvero super che entrerà nei top del genere e siamo molto eccitati di come si stia sviluppando questo pezzo!”

Infatti come dici quasi tutti i pezzi parlani di avventura o science fiction. Puoi dirci qualcosa di più per il tema portante di ogni brano? In particolare 'Planet Crusher' parla per caso di silver Surfer e Galactus (personaggi visti nei fumetti dei supereroi Fantastici Quattro)? E ancora... in 'Operation Overlord' racconti del famoso D-Day, ossia l'invasione della Normandia. Ti sei documentato leggendo libri e vedendo film che trattano di questa cruciale battaglia della seconda guerra mondiale?

"Come sempre ci siamo documentati per scrivere i pezzi dell'album. Io sono un grande fan dei fumetti dei supereori ma sai, le ramificazioni delle varie serie sono talmente complesse e poi ci sono i problemi legali per poterne parlare nella canzoni... così ci siamo limitati a qualche track. Silver Surfer è da sempre il mio personaggio preferito ed è stato quindi naturale parlarne in 'Planet Crusher'!. Poi c'è 'Spirit Of Vengeance' che invece è ispirato al fumetto di Ghost Rider con la prima parte della song che narra in prima persona dell'orribile patto fatto con il diavolo. In realtà il personaggio combatte contro Satana nel nome di Dio... è una grande canzone.
Io sono anche un grande appassionato della seconda guerra mondiale ed anche scrivere 'Operation Overlord' è stato molto naturale; anthony invece si è occupato dalla parte musicale del pezzo ed è davvero maestosa secondo me. Adoro come si susseguono i versetti del testo e il modo naturale in cui esplode il ritornello. Inoltre ho aggiunto una parte narrata di Eisenhower alla fine aggiungendo un piccolo frammento di vera storia.
La trilogia di 'Science Of Annihilation' l'amo davvero ed è probabilmente il nostro pezzo più veloce! Ci sono un sacco di urli, di acuti e la storia parla della fine di tutta l'esistenza. Il personaggio principale è un semidio che parla direttamente con Dio alla fine della fiction quando l'universo finisce. E' una sorta di vibrazione che possiede questo CD e che trascende i confini del dominio terreno!"

Come per il precedente CD anche per i nuovo album avete un ottimo booklet con illustrazioni per tutte le canzoni. Chi è l'autore?

"Si tratta di George Davis, che lavora per una compagnia di video game (un gigantesca ditta); si tratta di un metal fan ed ha anche lavorato in alcuni fumetti della Marvel Comics. Lui ama il metal e sa come dev'essere rappresentato. E' stata davvero una benedizione per noi la sua collaborazione. Come sempre noi ce la mettiamo tutta per realizzare i migliori booklet possibili per la scena. Vogliamo che il packaging dei nostri CD non sia secondo a nessuno!”

Parlando ancora dell'artwork... la cover presenta un orribile demone (immagino abbia a che fare con la suite di 'Science Of Annihilation' vero?) non sembra essere l'ideale per l'immaginario christian metal... che ne pensi?

"E' assolutamente malvagio, ma come puoi immaginare l'immagine che presentiamo è come una sorta di avvertimento affinchè si vigili al fine di sconfiggere il male in tutte le sue forme. La cover era un'immagine già pensata e prodotta da prima. In fase di lavorazione stavamo anche sviluppando un altro concept ma non avevamo abbastanza tempo per realizzarlo. Questo artwork segue quello di "Hell Destroyer" e può coesistere nell'universo con lui. Molte persone hanno espresso giudizi positivi su questa cover così l'abbiamo scelta. Sembra l'ideale per la copertina di un classico album di metal. Io ovviamente adoro anche la cover di "Hell Destroyer"!"

Ancora una curiosità su "Hell destroyer". Alcuni lettori e alcune recensioni hanno parlato di 'Cremation Of Care' come di una vera e propria invocazione del male... molti hanno scritto che ciò è assolutamente orribile e anti-cristiano... nella mia opinione è solo la parte di una storia più grande. Puoi ora spiegarci la vera idea che ha la band a proposito di questa intro?

"Quella è solo una parte della storia in cui l'anticristo comunica con Satana per programmare l'invasione demoniaca definitiva. Ho inserito questa parte più realistica nella storia per rendere l'Apocalisse in una verisone moderna e con una maggiore dose di realismo. 'Bohemian Grove' è senza ombrqa di dubbio un posto maligno e l'atmosfera malvagia che lo circonda è l'ideale per la cospirazione che si sta realizzando nella storia. Il video di 'Cremation Of Care' fa rabbrividire. E' una cosa buona il fatto che questo passaggio abbia causato così forti emozioni negli ascoltatori. La storia racocnta della battaglia finale fra il bene ed il male."

Ad oggi avete realizzato, comprendendo il nuovo album, cinque full length ufficiali ma so che nel passato avere anche scritto altro materiale, quattro lavori se non sbaglio, che si possono recuperare tramite internet sul vostro sito ufficiale. Vuoi parlarci di questi quattro CD e di come è possibile venirne in possesso?

"WoW. Bene... quando abbiamo firmato il nostro ultimo contratto negli USA il titolare ci aveva richiesto di raccogliere tutto il vecchio materiale che avevamo. Prima di tutto abbiamo il CD "Lost" che sarebbe il nostro primo album mai realizzato; propone alcune ottime song ed alcune di queste sono state riprese su "Unveiled".
Abbiamo poi "Nomad Tapes" che presenta quel che ho realizzato con la mia prima band con il chitarrista Eric Horton. La registrazione è davvero rozza ma alcune cose sono interessanti. Potremmo anche decidere di ri-registrare tutte queste canzoni l'anno prossimo e proporre il tutto come si deve al pubblico.
I nastri di "Crusher" sono i brani realizzati dalla band di Dave Garcia ed anche in questo caso per i nostri pezzi abbiamo in alcuni casi preso alcuni riff dalle canzoni delle nostre vecchie band.
Abbiamo inoltre anche una registrazione live.
Infine c'è anche in CD intitolato "The Hidden Sessions" che presenta versioni differenti di brani usciti o materiale mai realizzato ufficialmente. Per il momento si tratta di tracce digitali ma stiamo pensando di realizzarle con tanto di packaging di valore. Quindi rimanete sintonizzati!”

I miei complimenti, Sean, per la tua prova in questo nuovo album. Ci sono canzoni come 'Spectre OF War' in cui la tua voce èdavvero incredibile! Per quanti anni credi di poter continuare a cantare con così tanta emozione e potenza?

"Ha! Grazie, la mia voce è ora più forte che mai! Sto inoltre cercando sempre di utilizzarla oltre i limiti possibili in modo che sia sempre più difficile da riprodurre quanto si sente nei dischi. Siamo davvero orgogliosi di come abbiamo curato le linee vocali, compresi i cori per i quali abbiamo dedicato molta attenzione. Io spero di rimanere a questi livelli ancora per molti anni nel futuro. Penso che Halford era ancora agli inizi quando aveva la mia età quindi credo che almeno per altri dieci anni non dovrei aver problemi a mantenere la fierezza della mia voce!”

Ora possiamo affermare, al contrario di qualche tempo fa, che siete più a contatto con la scena christian metal. Cosa sapete adesso di questa realtà? Bands, promoter, fan? Cosa pensate approposito del vostro futuro? Continuerete a scrivere canzoni con messaggi cristiani?

"Come ho detto prima nel prossimo CD intitolato "Metal Ultimates" proporremo una o forse due canzoni con messaggi cristiani. O chi lo sa... magari di più. Più gli anni passano e più mi avvicino al Signore e la mia fede entra sempre di più nella mia vita ogni giorno che passa.
In questo momento sto imparando sempre di più della scena cristiana, dei suoi musicisti e delle sue band. Ho incontrato e ho cantato con Rob Rock e continuo a ritenere che la nostra band è una christian metal band o anche che siamo semplicemente gli American Power Metal Kings! Come ho affermato prima la Luce risplenderà sempre atraverso i nostri album anche se potrà non essere diretta nei messaggi delle song. Penso che abbiamo contribuito a proporre a tanti nuovi fan le virtù di Dio e ancor di più quanto è ridicolo e noioso l'immaginario satanista che permea oggi il metal. Questo è anche un motivo per il quale non si sono cose come pertagrammi o schifezze simili nei nostri album.”

Ok Sean, spero ci incontreremo all'Elements Of Rock e per il momento posso solo ringraziarvi per questo nuovo album. Le tue ultime parole per i lettori di HolySteel?

"Spero davvero di incontrati in Svizzera. Noi siamo onorati ed eccitati di prendere parte a quest'evento. Un grazie a tutti i nostri leali fan e state pur certi che continueremo a scrivere grandi canzoni impegnando oltre ogni limite.

After the masterpiece entitled "Hell Destroyer" the american band Cage returns with a new album, "Science Of Annihilation", like an earthquake that can destroy all the satanic metal of the world. Faster than ever with songs that put to the limits the great ability of every musician of the band, the new album is a great work to discover... with the help of the singer Sean... that will talk about messages of the songs and about the show of the european tour with attention first of all for the christian metal festival Elements Of Rock.

Your new album “Science Of Annihilation” continues in the vein of classic heavy metal like “Hell Destroyer” and “Darker Than Black”. What do you expect from this new release?

"Good to be with Holy Steel again! This CD was really interesting to do as it was our first with new drummer Norm Leggio ex of Psychotic Waltz and we had a good time writing it. We expect that this CD will be seen as us pushing the power metal limits once again. Being a metal fan is why I began sining so as always we want this to be a head banging masterpiece that people cherish and replay for years to come. ”

One of the first news about your 2009 is about the European tour. I remember my first interview with you, Sean, in which you told me that was difficult to plan a tour in Europe. So we can say that everything is going in the right direction for Cage?

"It is funny how now that we are basically our own label with our creation of Heavy Metal Media, we have managed to book our first real european tour and many other accomplishments. I have to thank Music Buy mail and ArtistWorxx for their crucial participation also. Now we have the network set so that there will more Cage than ever in the years to come in Europe. We are really excited about getting out to the people and really unleashing this new material.”

An important show of this tour is planned for Elements Of Rock, probably the most important christian metal festival in Europe. What do you expect from this experience?

"I'm a little nervous to be honest. We are all Christians as you know and this will be our first Christian metal fest. I want to fully embrace it and share in the Spirit of the event. I have a very moving story I would like to share there if I have a chance that may sway any non believers. My wife and I both had an encounter with a spirit at our home in San Diego that was mind blowing as I stared this thing down from about 1 foot away. We both saw it so it was not an illusion of any kind. If there are indeed Spirits they must go somewhere and that somewhere is in God’s kingdom.
So for anyone reading this that may be struggling with their Faith or requires some empirical evidence, let me assure you without any doubt the soul exists. We are very honoured that Elements would have us and covet us so. "Hell Destroyer" was a very special record and we realized just how passionate Christian Metal fans are!”

In “Hell Destroyer” you began to write lyrics with Christian messages. Now in “Science Of Annihilation”, if I’m not wrong, there’s only one song that shows a direct Christian message… I’m talking about ‘Power Of A God’. So can we consider the new album again like a christian metal album? I see also that in the thanks list many of the members thanks God and Jesus so I think there are no doubts about this…

"I knew I would have to respond to the nature of the "Science Of Annihilation" CD and its’ imagery. The main purpose of this record was to go to a no frills metal anthemic record that embraced just standard heavy metal themes that made you bang your head! Laced within the lyrics the Light still shines as it always will with Cage but direct Christian themes are not bursting out from this album. We wanted to depart from the "Hell Destroyer" a bit just to keep it fresh. So this is definitely more of a standard metal album with many more fictional themes than ever before. It was difficult to write in many ways but all of our Christian fans should know that we always will walk with God. I can tell you that we are already writing the next CD which we plan to have out in 2010 and will be filled with guest vocalists like the metal world has never seen before. The plans are to have one super Christian metal song with some of the top names in Christian metal involved we are very excited about that!”

I saw that the others songs are about science fiction themes and adventure. Can you explain deeply the themes of every song? In particular ‘Planet Crusher’ is about the history of Galactus and Silver Surfer? Again… in ‘Operation Overlord’ you talk about D-Day… did you read books or see movies to write this lyrics?

"As always much thought and research went into this album. I am a big comic book fan and really wanted to do a whole album of comic book stories and heroes but the legal ramifications were too ominous so I elected just to do a few songs. The Silver Surfer is probably my favourite of all and 'Planet Crusher' seemed only natural! I did 'Spirit Of Vengeance' also that tells the tale of the Ghost Rider with a horrible first lyric describing his deal with the Devil told in first person. But he fights against Satan in the name of the Rightous, that is a great song. 'Operation Overlord' was a natural as I am a big war buff also and Anthony wrote the music which had a real majestic feel to it. I love how the verses came out and the chorus was just a natural. I put the sample of Eisenhower’s speech at the end to add some historical education to it. The 'Science Of Annihilation' trilogy I really love as it is probably our fastest song at 200 BPM! Lots of screaming and a cool tale about the end of all existence. The character is a Demi-God who speaks to God himself at the end of the story as the Universe ends. There is an overall cosmic vibe to the CD that transcends the confines of our earthly domain!"

Like for “Hell Destroyer” also the new album has a beautiful booklet with illustrations for every song. Who is the author?

"George Davis who works for a video game company (a huge one) and has done some Marvel Comics work and is a huge metal fan. He loves metal and knows what it should look like. He has really been a blessing and a huge help in our endeavours. As always we try to produce the best looking booklets in the industry. We want our packaging to be second to none!"

Again about the artwork… the cover with that horrible demon (is it about the plot of ‘Science Of Annihilation’ suite?) is not too much into Christian metal… what do you think about?

"It is definitely Evil looking but as you can tell our imagery is usually set as a warning to all that vigilance is necessary to defeat Evil in all of its’ forms. The cover was an image that was already composed and due to time we went with something that was already complete. We had another concept but simply did not have the time. It went along with the "Hell Destroyer" imagery and can easily coexist in that universe. Many people really liked it so we took it. It definitely looks like a metal cover. I still Love the "Hell Destroyer" cover though! ”

Again a curiosity about “Hell Destroyer”. Some readers and some reviews talked about ‘Cremation Of Care’ in which there’s an invocation to evil… many told that this is absolutely horrible and anti-christian… in my opinion is only a part of the history. Can you explain now what is the real idea of the band about this passage?

"That is the part of the story where the antichrist communes with Satan to make their final plans for the demonic invasion. I put this bit of reality into the story so that it could be soaked in modern relevance to imbue even more reality into the depiction of Revelations. The 'Bohemian Grove' is undoubtly an Evil place and the conspiracy that surrounds it made it the perfect setting for such wickedness. The video of the Cremation of care ceremony is very spooky and makes your skin crawl. It is good that it evoked such strong emotion form the listeners. This was meant to be the ultimate battle between good and evil.”

I know that you have out five official releases (with “Science Of Annihilation”) but you have also many others releases, four if I’m nor wrong, that is possible to obtain by internet, by your website. Do you want to talk about these four albums and explain how is possible to obtain them?

"Wow! Well, when we did our last US deal the guy wanted us to dig up all the back stuff we had and put it together. Basicaly we have the "Lost" CD that was our first full length that was never released. It has some cool tracks and some were redone on "Unveiled". We have the "Nomad Tapes" that was my first band with original guitar player Eric Horton. The quality is rough but some col stuff there. We may rerecord all that stuff bext year and really put it out properly. The "Crusher" tapes was Dave Garcia’s band and again we ripped songs and riffs off from both our old bands. Then there is a live recording available. There is also a cd called "The Hidden Sessions" which has alternate versions of stuff and some unreleased songs too. The are only digital releases now but there is talk of packaging them up in some sort of value packages. Keep checking!"

My compliments Sean, for this new release. There are songs like ‘Spectre Of War’ in which your voice is really incredible! How many years will you continue to sing with so great power and emotion?

"Ha! Thanks my voice is stronger now than ever knock on wood! I am always trying to push the limits on the recordings and live it is always difficult to reproduce.
We put a lot of layers and overlaps that makes us really focus on our backing vocals which we are very proud of. I hope to continue wailing many years into the future. I think Halford was probably in his prime at my age now so maybe another 10 years I will still have the fiercness!”

Now we can say that you are more into the Christian metal scene. Do you know more about this reality? Some bands, promoter, fan? What do you think about your future? Will you continue to write beautiful songs with Christian messages?

"Like i said earlier in the next CD (entitled "Metal Ultimates") will have at least one maybe two very special Christian songs. Who knows maybe more. As the years go on I become closer and closer to the Lord and my faith becomes more a part of my life with each passing day. I am still learning about the Christian metal scene and am very interested in its’ players and bands.
I have met and sang with Rob Rock before and continue to balance being a Christian metal band and just simply the American Power Metal Kings! As i said the Light will always shine through in our albums although the message may be shrouded at times but it is always there. I think we have managed to expose many new young fans to the virtues of God and how he can be even more bad ass and cool than the ridiculous Satanic imagery that boringly permeates metal. That is why there are no pentagrams or crap on our albums.”

Ok Sean… I hope to meet you in Elements Of Rock and for the moment I can only thank you again for this new release. Your last words for HolySteel readers?

"I hope to see you there for sure. We are honoured and very excited to be involved. Thanks to all of our loyal fans and rest assured we will continue to push the limits and write great songs. God Bless!
