Ed eccoci finalmente con questa a lungo attesa e rimandata intervista ad uno dei personaggi più originali del panorama christian metal estremo. Billy Fraser è un individuo dalle idee molto chiare, ma soprattutto caratterizzato da un’ attitudine “militante” e “senza compromessi”. La sua ultima opera, “To Praise With Persecution”, ha attirato la nostra attenzione per l’estrema cura del prodotto e l’altissima qualità tecnico-compositiva mostrata dal suo master mind…
Un’intervista d’approfondimento a questo punto era più che dovuta, ed il nostro Fraser è stato oltremodo disponibile ed entusiasta nel rispondere alle nostre domande…

Giusto per iniziare la nostra chiacchierata, ci potresti dire se la scelta di suonare come una “one-man band”, con giusto qualche collaboratore occasionale, è una tua scelta specifica o piuttosto una condizione generata dalla difficoltà nel trovar gente con la tua stessa concezione musicale e religiosa?

“Ci sono alcuni aspetti, nella tua domanda, che riguardano strettamente il progetto Discern, per ciò che riguarda l’essere (o rimanere) un progetto di un artista solista, oppure una “one man band”, in ogni caso…
Prima di tutto, la scelta è totalmente mia. Mi piace comporre musica, ed essendo una “one man band” hai il controllo totale su tutta la musica. C’è ovviamente un aspetto negativo, ovvero che non puoi suonare con altra gente; questa situazione ti può far sentir solo, ah ah ah ah!
In seconda battuta, non c’è poi così tanta gente dalle mie parti, che io conosca, che ami il Signore e che vorrebbe suonare brutal-death metal per la Sua gloria. Questa sola ragione è stata “quel qualcosa” che mi ha aiutato a giungere alla conclusione, anni fa, che se non avessi avuto poca o molta gente con la quale suonare, allora voleva dire che me la sarei dovuta cavare da solo.”

Potresti dirci qualcosa di più sulle tue principali influenze musicali, parlando ad esempio dei gruppi che hai citato sul libretto del CD come tue fonti d’ispirazione musicale? In alcuni casi, come per i Deicide e i Morbid Angel, queste band sono davvero distanti dalle tue convinzioni religiose…

“Nel libretto del mio CD ho compilato una lista di gruppi o musicisti che mi hanno stimolato, o ispirato in un certo senso, o che son stati per me un’influenza musicale, oppure artistica, spirituale, o entrambe tutte queste cose. Tale lista è certamente vasta ed estesa, ed onestamente non include davvero tutti i gruppi che mi piacciono o mi appassionano. E’ composta dai miei “principali” gruppi preferiti, per i quali ho davvero sentito il bisogno di metterli in lista. Ci son stati gruppi o artisti che hanno influenzato, o continuano ad influenzare i Discern ancora oggi. Verso di essi mostro totale gratitudine ed eterna devozione…
I Deicide e i Morbid Angel sono, come tu stesso hai detto, parecchio distanti dalle mie convinzioni religiose, e questa è la strada che loro han scelto per sé stessi…Il caso ha comunque voluto che fossero alcuni di quei gruppi che hanno pesantemente influenzato la musica dei Discern. Gruppi invece come Crimson Thorn, Bloodgood, Feast Eternal e molti altri in lista sono molto più in linea con la mia visione religiosa, e mi hanno fortemente “benedetto” con la loro esistenza e con quanto il Signore ha operato attraverso loro, attraverso il loro messaggio e la loro musica.”

Esiste nel tuo Texas una “scena metal cristiana”, composta da altri gruppi assieme al tuo progetto, o ti senti solo, nella tua terra, su questa particolare “strada musicale” che hai deciso di percorrere?

“Certamente credo che ci sia una scena di musica cristiana locale in Texas ma, sfortunatamente, non saprei dirti molto su di essa, dato che ho smesso di tenermi attivamente in contatto con la scena cristiana ormai dal 1996…So certamente che ci sono gruppi locali di musica cristiana, ma il mio stato attuale di “aggiornamento” su questa materia si limita solo a tale assunto…son passati davvero tanti anni dall’ultima volta in cui ho assistito ad un concerto “christian” da queste parti.
Immagino che potresti dire che io sia da solo su questo sentiero musicale, soprattutto riguardo al brutal-death metal, ma so di tanti altri musicisti cristiani che non suonano necessariamente il mio stesso genere musicale. Infatti ho suonato con un gruppo di amici a me molto cari, giusto per 4 o 6 mesi, aiutandoli a metter su il loro repertorio mentre cercavano un batterista in pianta stabile, e loro sono giusto un po’ più duri di un gruppo progressive rock o “modern rock” che dir si voglia…ascoltali sul loro space (http://www.myspace.com/betapaste). La canzone sulla quale suono si chiama ‘Parentheses’…”

Hai comunque qualche intenzione di portare dal vivo i Discern , magari con dei session-men che ti potrebbero aiutare sul palco, o pensi che questa tua creatura musicale debba rimanere solo uno “studio-project”?

“Ho meditato sia in passato che in presente su questo aspetto, ed ho anche pensato a chi mi piacerebbe avere a fianco in una versione dal vivo dei Discern. Che si possa realizzare o meno rimane da vedere, ma è un aspetto che ho fortemente considerato. In questo momento comunque, il gruppo è ancora uno studio-project. Mai dire mai, in ogni caso…”

Parliamo un po’ degli aspetti religiosi di questo progetto…in quale chiesa o confessione cristiana poni la tua esperienza religiosa? Appartieni ad un gruppo o chiesa religiosa in particolare?

“Mi reco ad una locale “Chiesa Biblica”, che frequento da circa 9 anni e che non è una chiesa con una denominazione particolare” (n.d.r. : in pratica è una delle tante chiese che non vogliono porsi in nessuno dei filoni principali delle confessioni cristiane attuali, dai cattolici agli evangelici/protestanti, e che rivendicano una loro specifica autonomia…un fenomeno parecchio diffuso negli U.S.A. al giorno d’oggi…).

Ci puoi parlare un po’ delle reazioni che i tuoi amici e parenti hanno avuto riguardo a questo percorso musicale che hai deciso di seguire? Come vedono e commentano la tua così particolare ed estrema scelta musicale?

“Beh, tutti i miei amici coinvolti nell’ambiente metal adorano i Discern!!! Mi supportano totalmente al 100% . Le persone che amo e che non ascoltano metal mi supportano lo stesso poiché mi vogliono bene e di conseguenza appoggiano ciò che faccio. Mi sento come minimo “beato” per tutto ciò!…”

L’artwork del tuo CD è quanto meno professionale…che cosa rappresenta l’immagine in copertina, e perché hai scelto proprio quell’immagine di Gustave Dore (conosciuto soprattutto per esser stato lo storico illustratore di un’edizione speciale della “Divina Commedia” di Dante Alighieri)?

“L’immagine di copertina è una notevole illustrazione di due tipi di persecuzione che ho voluto affrontare nelle tematiche di questo nuovo CD.
Prima di tutto, è un’eccellente illustrazione di qualcuno che viene perseguitato. La song ‘Behold The Eretic’, su questa mia nuova release, parla proprio di perseguitare le false e blasfeme dottrine che si possono insidiare nel nostro “corpo spirituale”, le quali possono essere considerate fondamentalmente come un “veleno spirituale”. Il punto centrale di questa song sono le bugie trasmesse dal culto del “Movimento per la Fede”, riguardo a quanto Dio ti vorrebbe in salute a seconda se compi o meno delle donazioni ad alcuni predicatori in TV, e d’altro canto Dio stesso sarebbe “legato” dalle leggi di questo movimento. Già questa sola cosa varrebbe la pena che fosse perseguitata dai veri credenti in Cristo, i quali vogliono che la Dottrina Biblica sia sempre la prima e la più veritiera. Le dottrine eretiche han bisogno di essere confutate, e l’unica via in cui ciò può accadere è studiare la parola di Dio, sapere cosa realmente è l’eresia, e di conseguenza voltargli le spalle. Agendo in tal maniera già tutto questo diviene una preghiera a Dio stesso, proprio nel perseguitare l’eresia. (n.d.r. : ricordiamoci che la formazione religiosa di Billy è proprio improntata sullo studio delle scritture, frequentando egli una “Chiesa Biblica”…)
In seconda battuta, l’illustrazione di copertina è un gran modo per dimostrare come noi, in quanto credenti, dovremmo considerare il rifiuto di Dio nelle nostre vite. Dovremmo “mettere a morte” i nostri comportamenti peccaminosi, e i nostri desideri autoreferenti che possano ostacolare il cammino con Dio. Ancora una volta, tutto ciò è una preghiera al Padre Onnipotente, attraverso la persecuzione della nostra apostasìa…”

Perché hai scelto il viola come colore principale per l’artwork del CD? E che cosa rappresenta il serpente che troviamo sul retro del packaging? E’ forse il serpente mitologico della Genesi?

“Mi piacciono davvero, come colori, il blu e il viola, ed è una piacevole variante da tutti i cd death metal che vedi in giro di questi giorni, sempre col nero come colore principale. I colori differenti aiutano il CD a “separarsi dalla massa”.
L’immagine di quel serpente è venuta fuori fondamentalmente da un’idea che ho avuto io, generata da un mio passo biblico favorito, Matteo 10:16, dove Cristo dice “siate astuti come serpenti e semplici come colombe”. Ho avuto diversi serpenti come animali domestici, dato che sono i miei animali preferiti, così quell’idea ci stava perfettamente, ed è ormai un “leit-motiv” che puoi vedere su ogni uscita ufficiale dei Discern. C’è infatti un serpente di mia proprietà ritratto sul primo CD dei Discern, “Revive and Rebuke”…”

Le parole che hai scritto per le tue canzoni sono davvero “intense” ed “estreme”. Parliamo soprattutto di testi come quelli di ‘Your Choice’, riguardante l’aborto (decisamente crudele nelle sue descrizioni!), ‘One Flesh’, dedicata (è possibile?) al matrimonio cristiano, ed infine le lyrics di ‘Behold The Eretic’, dove hai parlato di alcuni predicatori televisivi che conosci lì in U.S.A. Quest’ultima canzone è davvero impressionante…perché tutta quella rabbia e “condanne” su quegli uomini?

“Si, i testi sono molto “intensi”, proprio come tutte le releases che hanno a che fare col progetto Discern, estreme ed intense.
‘Your Choice’ è semplicemente una descrizione dell’atto dell’aborto, e di quanto orribile esso sia…
‘One Flesh’ è una canzone che ho dedicato alla mia stupenda e giudiziosa moglie, dato che lei è una vera benedizione per me, ed io ringrazio Dio ogni giorno per avermi benedetto con la più incredibile moglie che avrei potuto sposare. E’ una canzone d’amore messa in chiave brutal death, ed è fondamentalmente la prima canzone che ho scritto per quest’album. Volevo fare una canzone con la quale i credenti sposati potessero confrontarsi, e potessero essere edificati ed incoraggiati nei loro matrimoni. Perché non scriverla su quanto è bello avere una stupenda moglie?
‘Behold The Eretic’ è una song dedicata alle ridicole eresie del “Movimento per la Fede”, e su ciò che puoi comunemente vedere tra i predicatori televisivi di questi giorni. Sfortunatamente, tutto sembra essere una disgustosa e sporca combinazione tra materialismo e certi versetti biblici che questi “venditori”, o “predicatori”, cercano di distorcere e raffazzonare in qualcosa che ti vogliono presentare e far adorare, mentre alla fine tutto si riduce ad un blaterare parecchio distante dal vero Dio della Bibbia. Questi testi possono essere in un certo qual modo considerati pieni di rabbia, ma parlerei piuttosto di “retta rabbia”, come minimo…E’ una vera sfortuna che così tante persone vogliano solamente ascoltare questi predicatori, così loro possono dirgli solo ciò che le loro stolte orecchie vogliono ascoltare, adorando i loro desideri solo con ciò che vogliono sentire (2 Tim, 4:3)”

Here we are finally with this long-awaited interview with one of the most original musician of the christian extreme metal scene. Billy Fraser’s a guy with very clear ideas, but most of all with a “killer” and “uncompromising” attitude! His last opera “To Praise With Persecution” has attracted our attention thanks to its extreme cure for the packaging and the highest technical and musical quality shown by the “mastermind” Fraser behind the curtains…
This interview is really deserved by our friend Fraser, who has been really kind and happy in answering to our questions…

Just to begin our chat, could you please tell us if the choice of playin’ like a one man band, with just few occasional collaborators, is a choice of yours or a condition generated by difficulties in finding people with the same religious and musical path of yours?

“There are reasons within the aspects of your question that pertain to Discern being or remaining a solo artist or one man band at this time.
First, the choice is completely mine. I do like to write music, and being a one man band, you have complete control over all music. The down side of course, is not playing with others at the same time. That can get lonely…ha ha!!!
Second, there really is not many people I know of near me that love the Lord and love to play brutal death metal for His Glory. That reason alone was something that helped myself come to the conclusion years ago that if I didn’t have many or any others to jam with, then I must just do it myself.”

Could you please tell us something about your main musical influences, speaking for example about the bands you have mentioned on the CD booklet as your musical inspirations? In some cases, such as Deicide and Morbid Angel, they’re really far away from your religious beliefs…

“In my CD booklet, I have compiled a list of the bands or musicians that have moved me or influenced myself in a sense, or been an influence to me musically, either artistically, spiritually, or both. The list is of course, vast and wide, and honestly, did not include every band I like or adore. It was really down to my absolute favorites that I wanted to list.
These were bands or artists that have and continue to influence Discern to this very day. To them I offer complete gratitude and eternal hails.
Deicide and Morbid Angel, are, like you said, really far away from my personal religious beliefs, and that is the path that they have chosen for themselves. They just happen to be some of the bands that have heavily influenced the music of Discern. Bands like Crimson Thorn, Bloodgood, Feast Eternal, and many others listed are more in line with my religious views, and have blessed me tremendously with their existence and what the Lord has done thru them, thru their message and music.”

Is there in your Texas a “Christian metal scene”, made up by other bands together with your project, or do you feel alone in your land on this particular musical path?

“I do believe that there is a local Christian music scene in Texas but unfortunately, I would not know much about it, as I have not kept up with the Christian scene actively overall since about 1996. I do know that there are some local Christian bands, but that is my only knowledge of that subject. It has been many years since I went to a Christian show here locally.
I guess you could say I am alone in my musical path, with the subject of brutal death metal, but I do know of many other Christian musicians as well, that don’t necessarily play the same style of music as I do. In fact, I played with a band who are very close friends of mine, for 4-6 months, helping them put their material together as they search for a permanent drummer, and they are more of a progressive rock/modern rock band. Do you also have some intentions about makin’ live gigs with Discern, maybe with session men who could help you on stage, or do you think your musical creature should only be a studio project?

“I have deliberated back and forth on this subject, and I have thought about who I would have in a live version of Discern. Whether or not it would even work out remains to be seen, but it is something I have considered. At this time though, it is still only a solo/studio project. Never say never though.”

Let’s talk about the religious aspects of this project…In wich Christian church or confession do you place your religious experience? Do you belong to a particular church or religious group?

“I go to a local Bible Church, where I have attended for 9 years and it is a non-denominational church.” (note: in Christianity, the term non-denominational refers to those churches that have not formally aligned themselves with an established denomination, or remain otherwise officially autonomous. This, however, does not preclude an identifiable standard among such congregations.)

Could you please talk about reactions your friends and relatives have had about this musical path you decided to follow? How do they see and comment your particular and extreme musical choice?

“Well, all of my friends that are into metal love Discern!!! They are completely supportive 100%. Loved ones that are not into metal still support me because they love me and support what I do. I am blessed to say the least. “

The artwork of your CD is really a professional one…what does the cover image represent, and why did you choose that image of Gustave Dore (known also as the historical illustrator of a special edition of the “Divine Comedy” of Dante Alighieri)?

“The cover art is very much an illustration of two points of persecution that I wanted to touch upon with this new CD.
First, it is an excellent illustration of someone being persecuted. The song ‘Behold The Heretic’, on the new Discern CD, is very much about persecuting false and ungodly doctrine within our Body of Christ, that is basically nothing short of spiritual poison. The central point of this song are the lies taught by the cult of the Faith Movement about how God wants you to be wealthy by donating to certain preachers on T.V., and in return, God himself is bound by the laws of Faith. That alone is worthy of persecution from believers of Christ that desire sound Biblical doctrine be first and foremost. Doctrines of heresy needs to be exposed, and the only way that can be done, is studying the Word of God, knowing WHAT heresy is, and turning our backs on it. With doing so, it is a praise to God Himself, by persecuting heresy.
Second, the cover illustration is a great way to view how we as believers should look at the ungodliness in our own lives. We should put to death our sinful ways and selfish desires that hinder our walk with Him. So again, it is a praise to the Allmighty Father by the persecution of our own ungodliness.”

Why did you choose violet as the main color of the CD artwork? And what does the snake we find in the back of the CD packaging represent? Is it maybe the mythological serpent of Genesis?

“I just happen to really like blue and violet, and it is a nice change from all the death metal CDs that you see these days with black being the most popular color of choice. The different color helps the CD to stand apart.
That serpent picture was actually an idea I had, resulting from a favorite scripture, Matthew 10:16, where Christ says, “Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” I happen to keep many snakes as pets, as they are my favorite animal, so the idea seemed to fit perfectly, and is somewhat of a common thing that has been seen on cds released by Discern. I had a snake of mine also pictured on the first Discern CD, “Revive and Rebuke”, as well.”

The words you have written for your songs are very intense and “extreme”. Above all, we’re talkin’ about lyrics of tracks such as ‘Your Choice’, about abortion (so cruel in its description!), ‘One Flesh’, dedicated (is it possible?) to Christian Marriage, and finally the lyrics of ‘Behold The Eretic’, where maybe you have spoken about some “TV – preachers” you know there in USA…this last track is really impressive…why all that anger and “sentences” on that men?

“Yes, the lyrics can be intense at times, as the issues that Discern deals with are just that, extreme and intense.
‘Your Choice’ is simply being descriptive of the act of abortion, and how horrible it is.
‘One Flesh’ was a song that I dedicated to my awesome and discerning wife, as she is such a blessing, and I thank God each day for blessing me with the most incredible wife that I could have married. It is a love song put to brutal death metal, and was actually the first song on the new album that I had written. I wanted to have a song where married believers could relate to, and be edified and encouraged in their marriages. Why not write about having an awesome wife?
‘Behold The Heretic’ is a song dedicated to the ridiculous heresy of the Faith movement, and what you see commonly amidst American preachers on the T.V. these days. Unfortunately, it seems to be a disgusting and wretched combination of materialism and certain Bible verses that these salesman, or “ preachers “, try to twist and mold into something that they want to present and worship, while all along, it is such a far cry from the true God of the Bible. The lyrics could be considered as somewhat full of anger, but I would consider it righteous anger to say the least. It is unfortunate that so many only want to listen to certain preachers so that they can tell them what their itching ears want to listen to, worshipping their desires with what they want to hear ( 2 Tim. 4:3 ).”
