I Faith Factor sono il classico gruppo di metal senza compromessi, sia a livello del suond, un compatto ed ottimo heavy, sia per quanto riguardo il messaggio cristiano dei testi del primo album "Against A Darkened Sky", un chiaro ed evidente assalto all'arma contro i nemici dell'etica cristiana. Vediamo di saperne di più facendo due chiacchiere con il singer della band, il carismatico Ski.

"Beh, tutto è iniziato nell'anno 2000; ero in una band chiamata Factor Five e stavamo lavorando a qualcosa di nuovo riguardante lo U.S. power metal; andavamo spesso nello studio di registrazione e tutta la musica era pronta, ma eravamo rimasti senza soldi a quel tempo, cosi' saremmo dovuti tornare un altro giorno. Ci siamo tornati due settimane dopo, nell'aprile del 2000; io stavo guidando il mio camioncino Fedex e ho sentito una voce... “il tempo e' giunto, il tempo è giunto, per immolarti e seguirmi”
Quel giorno ho votato la mia vita a Cristo e me ne sono andato dalla band Factor Five. Sei anni piu' tardi, nel 2006, ho chiamato il batterista Dan, il bassista Joe e il chitarrista Chris... ed anche Jim, e con Dio abbiamo iniziato da li'. "

Il vostro album di debutto “Against A Darkened Sky” e' finalmente uscito. Cambiereste qualcosa in questa release o secondo te è perfetto ? Per esempio nella mia recensione ho scritto che la produzione avrebbe potuto esser migliore...

"Ok... prima di tutto il lavoro di produzione artistica è stato modificato, l'etichetta discografica Retroactive ci disse che non andava bene dal punto di vista grafico per esser venduto al mercato cristiano... ma quella è la visione che dio mi ha fornito, ed è stato cosi' che l'ha creato l'artista Kirsi Salonen. In secondo luogo come band abbiamo speso tutti I soldi che dovevamo spendere per la registrazione; purtroppo non erano abbastanza per ottenere una perfetta produzione e così la Retroactive ha masterizzato il CD. Lo abbiamo dovuto mettere a posto mixandolo, penso che se avessimo avuto più soldi a disposizione avremmo ottenuto qualcosa di meglio, ma non avevamo il budget per farlo.
La buona notizia è che pianificheremo il nostro prossimo CD "The Wrath That Is To Come" e la Retroactive Records ci assicura che lo faremo bene questa volta, budget, tecnica di produzione..."

E' veramente interessante notare che nel vostro Demo “07.07.07” il suono è piu' melodico ed epico, invece nell'album è più aggressivo e con un tocco di thrash metal. Sei d'accordo ?

"Sono d'accordo sul fatto che sia piu' heavy e aggressivo, e anche progressive, ma thrash no, non si avvicina neanche al thrash; nel prossimo CD vorrei inserire una canzone thrash, sulla quale sto lavorando; al momento intitola 'Bullets For Satan'! (proiettili per satana)”

Ho notato che l'artwork originale inerente alla copertina era veramente diverso e impressionante, col guerriero che porta nella sua mano la testa di un demone. Perchè avete scelto di cambiare questa immagine con una versione più "morbida"?

"Come dicevo prima la copertina dell'album non andava bene, secondo la nostra etichetta, per essere venduto nel mercato cristiano; io ho precisato loro che non era per il mercato cristiano ma per quello secolare. Non siamo riusciti a metterci d'accordo e così siamo arrivati ad un compromesso; ho anche suggerito di creare due versioni diverse del CD ma poi alla fine non l'hanno fatto.

La prima canzone dell'album è 'Keep It True'; questo titolo è un tributo al festival tedesco? Perche' avete scritto nei testi tutti i nomi degli eroi metal come gli Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar?

"Ok 'Keep It True' ha due principali significati, si tratta di una canzone scritta per il CD quando abbiamo ottenuto la conferma di suonare al miglior festival di musica metal secolare in Germania. Una band di metal cristiana in Germania... wow! Se questa non e' la mano di Dio...
Ad ogni modo mentre stavo pregando, questo è quello che Dio mi ha detto di scrivere: "Onorami per prima cosa, poi mostralo al mondo, ho creato l'heavy metal per il bene non per il male, siate i miei bianchi guerrieri, siate veri per me e io realizzerò i desideri del vostro cuore"
Siamo tutti cresciuti ascoltando Judas Priest, Iron Maiden ecc... cosi' noi onoriamo prima di tutto Dio poi gli eroi della nostra infanzia. Noi non eravamo realemente nati fino a quando non siamo andati in chiesa, sino a quando non abbiamo letto la bibbia o pregato; prima abbiamo bevuto, fumato, fatto sesso e suonato la musica heavy metal."

Puoi spiegarci adesso, in maniera approfondita , il significato e il messaggio di ogni canzone dell'album?

"Certo...
'Evila Si Eh' (intro) – Lui vive con noi
'Keep It True' - Nella vostra fede, nel vostro metal
'The Rapture' - Quando cristo ritornerà
'In Gods Shadow' – In ogni battaglia dio ti protegge sotto la sua ala
'In Rememberance' – Quando muore qualcuno che ami
'Armor Of God' – Assicurati bene sul tuo equipaggiamento nella guerra contro Satana
'Devine Temptation' – 40 giorni e 40 notti nel deserto
'Ascend Unto Heaven' – Nascita , morte e risurrezione di nostro Signore
'Sinners Prayer' - Un invito alla salvezza”

Perchè non avete inserito nel CD di debutto le belle canzone del Demo ? Io non posso credere che una canzone come 'Prayer Warriors' non apparirà in una release ufficiale...

"Noi avremmo voluto includere tutte e tre le canzoni dall'EP, magari approfittando della nuova registrazione per il prossimo album, con una migliore produzione; infatti sono stati stampati solo 1000 di quegli EP e il nostro obiettivo per quel Demo era di venderlo tramite un'etichetta discografica ai i nostri fans più fedeli. Non avevamo idea che sarebbe stato un grande successo con tutti; avevamo avuto dei problemi di produzione così ne faremo anche un remix e un'altra registrazione o lo registreremo ancora come un EP vero e proprio, o aggiungeremo le tre canzoni per il nuovo CD oppure ancora si può anche parlare di un vinile live che contenga i pezzi."

Quali sono le band che hanno ispirato I Faith Factor? Io ho citato i Recon, i Saint ma anche band secolari come Judas Priest oppure OverKill...

"Io personalmente ho un vasto range; quando ho iniziato a cantare ho studiato gli Styx, i Kansas, i Journey. Sono poi arrivati Judas Priest, Iron Maiden e Queensryche. Nel 1989 infine ho scoperto una band chiamata Stryper, poi Recon, Sacred Warrior; più tardi, quando ho capito che potevo servire Dio come lo desidera il mio cuore, non potevo più tornare come prima a suonare metal secolare."

Nella formazione vedo che tutti nella band hanno un nomignolo come “Slayer Of Darkness” o “Karaoke Kid”. Potete spiegarci questi monicker?

"Sono solo per divertimento, e vanno a pari passo con le personalita' di tutti.
Joe – basso – Slayer of Darkness – esprime un grande significato vedere un cristiano con un cuore d'oro, capace di difenderti fino alla morte.
Dan – batteria – Karaoke Kid – gli piace cantare con il karaoke, lui è la mente e il mio doppio acrobata, lo vedrai quando ci vedrai suonare dal vivo.
Blaine – 'dai Priest' – grande fan dei Judas Priest da tutta una vita; io lo chiamo anche PB, Pastor Blaine ed e' un cristiano che si basa molto sulle scritture – è anche mio fratello nell'anima.
Chris – il Professore – come uno scienziato – focalizzato – disciplinato - costantemente impegnato per fare le cose al meglio.
Ski – il peccatore salvato dalla grazia di Dio – veterano sul fronte dell'heavy metal – lui sa quello che Dio vuole che tu faccia – io sono il sergente – the pusher (il fornitore) – il leader chiamato alle armi, colui che è scelto che non ha una scelta, io sono stato scelto, io so quello che sono stato chiamato a fare, io so come ottenerlo nel modo giusto, se tu stai dalla mia parte, Dio si prenderà cura di te.”

Adesso sentite la vostra carriera musicale come una missione ? Che cosa volete dare ai vostri fan? Io penso non solo musica ...

"Io non farei tutto questo se non fosse per il Creatore. Io me ne sono andato dall'heavy metal nel 2000, lui mi ha richiamato nel 2006, e questo perchè devo divulgare nel mondo il Vangelo; il Suo ritorno non avverrà finchè tutto il mondo non avrà udito il Suo nome. Noi Faith Factor siamo i missionari metal e questo è il ministero del metallo di Dio.”

Che confessione religiosa pratichi? Cattolica, protestante, altro? E il resto della band?

"Noi siamo una band con molte confesisoni, ma alla fine siamo tutti cristiani, la religione separa la gente di dio, questo è il motivo delle guerre sante. Una persona nella band non è molto religiosa, ma lui prega con noi prima di ogni show e noi sappiamo che nel profondo si sta avvicinando a Dio, lentamente...”

Che cosa ti ricordi dell'esperienza nelle band precedenti, parlo di Deadly Blessing, Obliterator e Altered State ?

"Deadly Blessing - la mia prima band... ragazzi fantastici, grandi musicisti, ho fatto tutto quello che potevo per loro, ho vissuto con loro per tre anni, mi son rasato la testa e son stato cacciato per il modo in cui apparivo, non per il mio talento.
Obliterator - semplicemente un progetto di studio – non era una band.
Altered State - quello era il modo in cui mi sentivo quando mi hanno cacciato, due anni dopo i Deadly Blessing son voluto tornare e sono riuscito a prendere la mia rivincita; penso di esser riuscito nell'impresa in quanto la band cessò di esistere prima che noi potessimo raggiungere il mercato mondiale.
Non dimenticarti poi degli Zygo, la mia prima band in assoluto, dove ho imparato a essere un cantante rock per prima cosa prima che anni passassero e fossi influenzato dal metal!”

Quando suonerete in un festival metal cristiano? Conoscete l'Elements Of Rock in Svizzera?

"Forte! Pensa che il 4 luglio del 2009 siamo stati invitati a un grosso festival cristiano conosciuto come Cornerstone 09 (ndr... il più grande festival christian al mondo...), band come Recon, Sacred Warrior, Barren Cross, Bloodgood suoneranno tutte nello stesso palco. Non vediamo l'ora di partecipare a questo evento, lo consideriamo una benedizione. Si, so tutto dell'Elements Of Rock e anche del Nordic Fest; ci focalizzeremo per andare in questi festival in futuro; il problema con questi festival cristiani, e coi festival secolari è che la maggior parte di loro vogliono che paghi di tua tasca per arrivar lì e tornare indietro. Considerando il fatto che si tratta di una benedizione per i frutti del nostro lavoro, possiamo permetterci solo alcuni di loro; in piu' noi abbiamo tutti un lavoro e una famiglia da mantenere... ma come dico sempre... se Dio vuole che questo accada per noi allora lui lo rendera' possibile. ”

Ok, è stato un piacere fare questa intervista con te, mister Ski! Ti lascio concludere come preferisci tu...

"L'intero significato dietro il nome della band dei Faith Factor è questo... tutti credono in qualcosa in che cosa credi tu? e a che livello ci credi!

Faith Factor are the classic metal band withoot compromise, first of all for the sound, a direct and powerful heavy, but also the christian message of their lyrics in the debut album "Against A Darkened Sky", a clear and sure assault against the enemies of christian ethic. We will try to know more talking with the singer of the band, the frontman Ski.

Ski, my first question is about the creation of band Faith Factor and your decision to play Christian metal. How did you choose to begin this adventure? And what can you tell us about the beginning of your new band?

"Well, it all started in the year 2000 i was in a band called Factor Five; we were working on some new U.S. power metal, we were in recording studio, we had all the music down, but ran out of money an time, so we had to come back another day, we were to come back in two weeks, in april of 2000, i was driving around in my Fedex truck... and i herd a voice... "the time is now, the time is now, to sacrifice an folow me"
I gave my life to Christ that day, and quit Factor Five; six years later 2006, I called back the drummer Dan, the bass player Joe, and guitar player Chris and Jim, and god took it from there.”

Your debut album “Against A Darkened Sky” is finally out. Did you change something about of this release or in your opinion is perfect? For example in my review I wrote that the production could be better…

"Ok first of all the artwork was altered, Retroactive Records felt the art work was to graphic to sell to the christian market, but that is the vision that God gave to me, so that is what Kirsi Salonen the artist created.
Second we the band put up all the money we had to record, it just wasn't enough to get the perfect production, Retroactive Records mastered the CD, we had it mixed, I think if we had more $ it would of come out much better, but we just didnt have the budget to do it, but the good news is, were planning our next CD "The Wrath That Is To Come" and Retroactive Records is gonna make sure we do it right this time, budget, producer tec.”

It’s really interesting to see that in your Demo “07.07.07” the sound is more melodic and epic, instead in the album is more progressive with a touch of thrash metal. Do you agree?

"I agree that it is more heavy and agressive, and progressive, but thrashy no, no wheres near thrashy, but on the next one i want to have a thrashy song, which I'm working on right now called 'Bullets For Satan!'”

I saw that the original artwork for the cover of the album was really shocking and different, with the warrior that bring in his hand the head of a demon. Why did you choose to change this image with a more softly version?

"As I told Retroactive Records decided it was too graphic to sell to the christian market; I told them its not for the christian market, its for the secular world, we didn't agree, so we compromised, I even suggested to put to versions of the CD out, then didnt go for it so if you go to our website at www.faithfactorband.com you can see the original artwork.”

The first song of the album is ‘Keep It True’; this title is a tribute to the german festival? Why do you write in the lyrics all the names of metal heroes like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Manowar?

"Ok 'Keep It True' as a two fold meaning, and it was the song written for the CD, we had just gotten confirmation to play the best secular heavy metal festival in Germany, a christian metal band, in germany wow, if thats not the hand of God.
Anyway while i was in prayer, this is what god told me to write, honor me first, then show the world, i created heavy metal, for good not evil, be my white warriors, stay true to me, an i will give you the desires of your heart.
We all grew up listening to Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, ect... so we honor god first then our childhood heros. we werent born again in our youths we didn't go to church, read the bible or pray, we drank, smoked, had sex play heavy metal music."

Can you explain now, really deeply, the meaning and the message of every song of the album?

"Evila Si Eh - Intro - He is Alive backwards
Keep It True- In Your Faith- In Your Metal
The Rapture- When Christ returns
In Gods Shadow - In every battle God has you under His wing
In Rememberance - When someone you love dies
Armor Of God - Make sure your well equipt for war against satan

Why you didn’t put in the debut CD the beautiful songs of the Demo? I cannot believe that a song like ‘Prayer Warriors’ will not appear in an official release…

"We at first wanted to do that an include all three songs from the EP, were thinking of re-recording them for the next one, with better production, an make them even better, only 1,000 of the EP were printed, and our objective for the EP was to shop for a record label, and to sell to our loyal fans.
We had no idea it was going to be such a big hit with everyone, we had some production problems with that as well, so we will either remix n remaster, or re-record and either re release as a EP, or add it as three bonus tracks to the new CD, or there is also talk of a live vinyl release.”

What are the inspiration bands for Faith Factor? I wrote about Recon, Saint but also secular bands like Judas Priest or Overkill…

"Me personaly I have a wide range of them, when I first started singing, I studied Styx, Kansas, Journey, then came along Judas Priest, Iron Maiden an Queensryche, in between all that in 1989 a band called Stryper, then Recon, Sacred Warrior much later in life, when I found out I could serve God, am my hearts desires, there was no turning back to the old creature.”

In the line-up I see that everyone in the band has a monicker like “Slayer of Darkness” or “Karaoke Kid”. Can you explain these monicker?

"It's just for fun and it goes well with everyones personalitys.
Joe - bass - Slayer of Darkness- big mean looking christian with a heart of gold, will defend you till deaths end.
Dan - drums - Karakoke Kid - Likes to sing at karaoke events, he's the brian, and my stunt double, you will se why when you see us live.
Blaine - da priest- Big Judas Priest fan all his life, I also call him pb, Pastor Blaine, has the heart of a pastor, and very scriptured based christian man - also my soul brother.
Chris- the professor- like a scientist - focused - disciplined - constantly disecting to make it better.
Ski - sinner saved by gods grace - veteran on the heavy metal front lines - know what God wants to get ur done - I am the sargent - the pusher - the leader called to arms, the chosen dont have a choice, I've been chosen, I know what i have been called to do, I know how to get it done, if you stand in my way, God will take care of you."

Now do you feel your music career like a mission? What do you want to give to your fans?

"I thing not only music…
I would not be doing this if it weren't for the Creator; I stepped away from the heavy metal world in 2000, He called me back in 2006 and this is why, to spread the word of the gospel through out the world. His return will not come untill all the world has herd his name, we Faith Factor are metal missionaries, and this is God's metal ministry.”

What kind of confession do you follow? Catholic, protestant, etc.? And the rest of the band?

"We are a band of many faiths, but in the end we are all christians, relgion separates gods people, thats why theres holy wars.
Four outta five in this band are saved, one is not, yet an he prays with us before every practice, and show, an we know deep down inside God is getting to Him, slowly...”

What do you remember about the times with your previous bands, Deadly Blessing, Obliterator and Altered State?

"Deadly Blessing, my first signed band, great guys, great musicians, I did all I could for them, lived together for three years, shaved my head an got kicked out for my apperance, not my talent.
Obliterator - simply a studio project- not a band.
Altered State - thats the state off mind i was in when they kicked me out, two years after Deadly Blessing, I wanted to come back out with a vengeance, and I think I accomplised that feat with as, the problem with as, the band chemistry fell apart, before we could hit the world market. Don't forget about Zygo, my first ever band, where I learned to be a rock singer first then as years passed on was molded into metal!”

When will you play in a christian metal festival? Do you know Elements of Rock in Switzerland ?

"Funny you should ask that question on july 4th of 2009 we have been invited to play a big christian festival know as Cornerstone 09, bands like Recon, Sacred Warrior, Barren Cross, Bloodgood, all have play this same stage, we can't wait for this one, we ar blessed.
Yes I know all about Elements Of Rock and also Nordic Fest; we will focus on getting on these festival in the future; the problem with these christian festivals, and seccular festivals, most of them want you to pay your own way there and back, and if we are blessed by the fruits of our labor, we can make some of them, plus we all have jobs, and families to also work around, but like i always say, if God wants it to happen for us , he will make the way.”
