Gli Hypersonic compaiono nella scena christian metal italiana con molta energia giovane, dinamisco e freschezza. Grazie al loro DemoMCD “Inspiration Is Transpiration” hanno attirato l'attenzione di molti fan del power metal sul suolo siciliano. Per HolySteel abbiamo l'occasione di intervistare il batterista della band, Salvatore “TuriMetal” Grasso, nonchè il chitarrista Emanuele Gamgemi; chiederemo loro diverse notizie circa la loro produzione, il loro futuro e alcuni cambi di line-up, anche per capire cosa sta succedendo alla band.

Per cominciare una domanda standard... perchè Hypersonic? Cosa si nasconde dietro il nome del gruppo?
Salvo (batteria): "Il nome Hypersonic nasce da una nostra forte esigenza di diffondere quanto più possibile un “iper-melodia” che vada oltre il semplice suono; inoltre è il moniker originale della band, fin dalla sua nascita, che ci ha subito soddisfatto. Siamo molto convinti di quello che facciamo, quindi penso proprio che resterà questo il nome del gruppo."

Gli Hypersonic sono una formazione molto giovane… quando è nata l’idea di cominciare questo progetto? Puoi descrivere la storia brevemente?
Salvo: "Si è vero la band ha un’età media molto giovane. Diciamo che l’idea è nata circa tre anni fa, dall’incontro tra me ed Emanuele (chitarrista), entrambe appassionati e vogliosi di mettere su un serio progetto metal, che racchiudesse un po’ le nostre influenze principali e i nostri amori musicali, in particolare modo power, gothic, hard rock, AOR e blues."
Ema (chitarra): " Si, infatti i gruppi che ci accomunano sono parecchi, a cominciare dai Metallica e Iron Maiden, fino ad Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius ed Europe, tutti facenti parte del nostro background musicale. Io e Salvo (batterista) ci incontrammo molto tempo prima della formazione degli Hypersonic e ci ripromettemmo, non appena concluse altre esperienze musicali, di creare un qualcosa di veramente importante. E così, grazie a Dio sta prendendo corpo tutto ciò, e non possiamo che essere soddisfatti di quanto fatto fin ora"

Prima dell’attuale cantante avete avuto un’altra cantante..Cosa è successo? Qual è la motivazione per cui lei non canta più e invece lavorate adesso con Alessia?
Salvo: "La precedente cantante si chiamava Vera Romeo e con le siamo cresciuti tanto come gruppo, abbiamo debuttato e realizzato tanti concerti, inoltre abbiamo realizzato il primo demo nel 2007.
Col passare del tempo, però, ci siamo accorti che per la musica che stavamo componendo la sua voce non si adattava più alle nostre esigenze. La ricerca di una nuova cantante, così, ci ha portato a scoprire il talento di Alessia Rapisarda. Con lei abbiamo a nostro avviso compiuto un salto importante rispetto al passato e abbiamo realizzato quello che ad oggi è la nostra prima apparizione, seppur autoprodotta, nel panorama metal."


Parliamo del vostro debutto… Inspira… un DemoMCD power metal con influenze e melodie AOR. Quali artisti vi hanno influenzato durante la creazione e la registrazione del CD specialmente?
Ema: "Si è vero è un lavoro decisamente power metal con influenze AOR molto melodiche provenienti direttamente dagli anni ’80."
Salvo: "I gruppi che ci hanno maggiormente influenzato nella stesura dei brani sono stati sicuramente Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Europe e il panorama gothic/symphonic in generale."

La canzone 'A Lovely Creature' ricorda chiaramente lo stile dei Nightwish. Come siete arrivati e ottenuto un suono simile?
Salvo: "La canzone ‘A Lovely Creature’ strizza molto l’occhio alla scena metal finlandese e chiaramente i Nightwish sono stati fondamentali nella nostra cultura musicale."
Ema: "Anche se c’è da dire che comunque il nostro stile deriva dalle esperienze musicali di ogni singolo componente. C’è chi ha un attitudine più rock/pop come Alessia, chi ha un passato da musicista rock come Francesco e chi, come me e Salvo, è “malato” di metal, in prevalenza melodico (risate)."


Come seconda traccia avete inserito 'Heaven'. Quali influenze e quale percorso power metal seguite in questo senso? Anche il testo è il più cristiano rispetto agli altri. Puoi dirmi qualcosa circa la canzone?
Ema: "‘Heaven’ è un brano stupendamente speed/power e deriva senza dubbio dalla nostra passione innata per i gruppi power melodici che hanno segnato la storia del metal, e in particolar modo Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica ed Helloween."
Salvo: "Il testo è certamente, assieme a ‘Wings Of Life’, il più cristiano dell’intero lavoro. Ci piace definirla una preghiera che ci accompagna sempre nelle nostre uscite live e descrive il paradiso come un mondo di pace e di eternità dove l’anima sarà sempre salva al cospetto della luce divina."


Ho prestato molta attenzione alla cover del DemoMCD. Nuvole tempestose e due figure intriganti… La bianca che è in fuga ed esce dalla figura oscura. Cosa rappresenta esattamente questa cover? Chi l’ha concepita?
Salvo: "La cover del DemoMCD è già esistente e mi ha colpito subito per la sua particolarità, visto che si riallaccia chiaramente al titolo del lavoro che è ispirato ad una famosa opera del romanziere Ernst Emingway, appunto, “Inspiration Is Transpiration”.
L’ispirazione è infatti traspirazione, cioè è sudore, è fatica, ed in questo caso è rivolto alla musica e al nostro lavoro. Andiamo ora alle figure rappresentate nella cover. La figura oscura non è altro che il nostro Io, lo specchio della nostra personalità quotidiana che però può esaltarsi, innalzarsi ad un qualcosa di divino, che per noi in terra è la musica. La copertina vuole rappresentare e mostrare l’anima di chi compone musica nel momento dell’ispirazione e quindi della trasposizione."



“Inspiration Is Transpiration” è stato realizzato come autoproduzione. Al momento siete in cerca di un'etichetta discografica?
Ema: "Si certamente! Siamo in cerca di un contatto con un’etichetta. Speriamo tutti che arrivi presto!"

So che Francesco Testa ha da poco abbandonato la band per vari problemi e che ora avete un nuovo tastierista. Potete commentare questa novità e presentarci il nuovo membro degli Hypersonic? Pensate che questo nuovo elemento possa apportare qualcosa di nuovo alla vostra musica?
Ema: "Questa decisione è scaturita da vari problemi personali di Francesco ”Ciccio” Testa che lo hanno portato, soprattutto nell’ultimo periodo a prendere le distanze dal progetto. La nostra fortuna è stata quella di trovare subito un nuovo elemento che si è dimostrato idoneo al genere degli Hypersonic."
Salvo: "Dario Caruso, il nome del nuovo tastierista, nonché fratello gemello di Francesco, si è integrato perfettamente nell’organico e ha inoltre manifestato una grande capacità di adattamento alle esigenze della band."


Voi venite dalla Sicilia. Molti metal fan cristiani sanno che a Catania, vostra città, risiede anche la grande power/prog metal band dei Metatrone. Sembra proprio che voi siate in ottimi rapporti con loro. Che tipo di legame c’è tra la loro musica e la vostra?
Salvo: "Il destino ha voluto che incontrassi e conoscessi Davide Bruno (tastierista Metatrone) ad un festival di musica a Catania, dove avevo partecipato come cantante solista. Davide si è dimostrato subito parecchio disponibile con noi assieme a Stefano (chitarrista Metatrone). Da li è nato uno splendido rapporto fatto di tanta amicizia e fraternità che conserviamo tutt’ora. E lo consideriamo un grande dono di Dio!"


Avete mai preso in considerazione di registrare qualcosa di sperimentale assieme ai Metatrone?
Ema: "Sarebbe certamente una sorpresa e una novità per noi poter registrare qualcosa, magari nel prossimo studio album, con qualche elemento “metatronico”. Perché no?"

In che modo avete pianificato la promozione degli Hypersonic? Avete realizzato alcuni live shows?
Salvo: " La promozione si sta incentrando sulla realizzazione di parecchi live show, con la presentazione del nuovo DemoMCD. Inoltre abbiamo avviato una vendita on-line del disco e di alcuna roba di merchandise."


Come ha reagito il pubblico alla vostra musica e nei vostri live?
Ema: "Il pubblico ha di buon grado mostrato un particolare interesse per la nostra musica e per le nostre forti melodie e ci accompagna sempre numeroso nelle nostre uscite live. Sono grandiosi!"


Sono molto curiosa circa il futuro artistico degli Hypersonic. Volete continuare seguendo l’attuale stile? Avete nei vostri piani la realizzazione di un album full-lenght?
Salvo: "Sicuramente il nostro genere è ormai collaudato e continueremo senz’altro in questo percorso musicale, senza disdegnare tuttavia nuove influenze e innovazioni tecniche. Per quanto riguarda il full-lenght, possiamo solo dire che è la prossima tappa che gli Hypersonic si sono prefissi di raggiungere quanto prima."


Per concludere penso vogliate dire qualcosa a tutti i lettori di Holy Steel.

Hypersonic appeared on the Italian christian metal scene with young energy, dynamism and sweet freshness. Through their melodic DemoMCD “Inspiration Is Transpiration” they’ve opened some gate to many hearts and caused that the eyes of power metal fans have turned again at the Sicilian stage. In this beautiful development of Hypersonic we had great possibility to interviewed the drummer - Salvatore “TuriMetal” Grasso and guitar-player – Emanuele Gangemi, for among others to ask about their work, future and the surprised change, which happened inside the band.

On beginning one standard question… Why Hypersonic? What hides behind the name of your band?
Salvo (drums): "The name Hypersonic born from a strong need to diffuse how much it was possible a “big melody” that could go beyond the simple sound, then it was the original moniker of the band, that had been satisfied us since the beginning. We are very convinced about what we do, so I think that it will remain this the name of the band."

Hypersonic is just very young as a formation. When exactly has born idea to arise? Can you describe history of the group?
Salvo: "Yes it's true, the band has an average age very young. Let's say that the idea was born three years ago, with the meeting between me and Emanuele (guitar player), together passionated and longing to create a serious metal project, that could wrap our musical influences and our musical loves, in particular manner power, gothic metal, hard rock , AOR and blues."
Ema: "Yes, infact the groups that are similar to us are a lot, beginning from Metallica and Iron Maiden, till to Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarious and Europe, all belonging to our musical background. Me and Salvo (drum player) met each other a lot of time before the Hypersonic formation and we promised to each other, when the other musical experiences were concluded, to create something really important. And so, thanks to God, it is building all this, and we can be only satisfied of what we've done till now."

Before current vocalist you cooperated with other female singer… What’s happen that she isn’t singing no more and you work with Alessia Rapisarda now?
Salvo: "The name of the previous singer was Vera Romeo and with her we grew up a lot like a band, we debuted and realized many concerts, moreover we realized our first demo in 2007. With the passing of time, we realized that for the music we were composing, her voice wasn't right to our need. The research of a new singer brought us , so , to discover the talent of Alessia Rapisarda. With her we made , at our advice, an important progress than the past and we realized our first appearance, although self produced in metal panorama."


Let’s talk about the DemoMCD. “Inspiration Is Transpiration” first of all joins power metal with AOR tunes. What artists influenced you during creation of the record especially?
Ema: "Yes it's true it's a project dedidedly power metal with AOR and very melodic influences coming directly from 80's."
Salvo: "The bands that mostly influenced us in writing the lyrics were surely Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Europe and the panorama gothi/symphonic in general."

The song ‘A Lovely Creature’ remember clearly Nightwish style. How did you manage to obtain so similar sound ?
Salvo: "The song 'A Lovely Creature' is similar to the songs of the finnish metal scene and Nightwish were fundamental for our musical culture."
Ema: "Even if we should say that however our style comes from the musical experiences of every member of the band. There is the person that has more rock/pop attitudes like Alessia, there is one that has a rock past like Francesco and the people like me and Salvo, it's “sick” about metal, in prevalence melodic (laughings )."


As a second you decided to put the track ‘Heaven’, which accents the power metal’s roots of Hypersonic. Also the lyric here is the most christian. Can you tell something more about this song?
Ema: "'Heaven' is a song stupendously speed/power and it comes from our passion for the bands power/melodic that contributed meaningfully the metal history, and in particular manner Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica and Helloween."
Salvo: "The lyrics are surely , together to 'Wings Of Life', the most Christian of the whole project. We like define it a prayer that accompanies us always in our live shows and it describes the paradise like a world of peace and eternity where the soul will be always safe in presence of the divine light."


I’ve paid attention to the cover of your DemoMCD in particular: Stormy clouds and two intrigued figures - the white which is running out of the dark figure. What exactly presents this cover? Who made it?
Salvo: "The DemoMCD cover is just present and it suddenly impressed me for its particularity. The title of the DemoMCD is inspired to a famouse work of the romancer Ernest Emingway “Inspiration Is Transpiration” . The inspiration is in fact transpiration that is perspiring and effort, and in this case is referred to the music and to our work. Let's talk right now about the figures represented in the cover. The dark figure is our ego, the mirror of our daily personality that can exalts itself, rise itself to something divine that for us in the land is the music. The cover wants to represent and show the soul of the people that creates the music in the moment of inspiration and so transposition."


“Inspiration Is Transpiration” you released as a autoproduction. Are you searching for any label?
Ema: "Yes of course ! We are searching for a contact with a Recording Label. We all hope that it will come soon!"

As I know it seems that last time Francesco Testai has abandoned Hypersonic and you have the new keyboards-player now. Can you comment this surprised information and discover who is this new member? Do you think that his appearance put something new to your music?
Ema: "This decision was born from various personal problems of Francesco “Ciccio” Testa that took him, above all in the last period to take the distances from the project. Our fortune was to find sudden a new element that demonstrated itself appropriate to the Hypersonic genre."
Salvo: "Dario Caruso, the name of the new keyboard player, and twin brother of Francesco integrated itself perfectly in the band and he showed a big ability of adaptation to the exigences of the band."


You come from Sicily. Many Italian christian metal’s fans recognize from this zone great power metal band Metatrone. It seems that you are with them in very good relations. What kind of connotation You have properly with Metatrone?
Salvo: "The destiny wanted that I could meet and know Davide Bruno (Metatrone keyboard player) to a music festival in Catania, where I partecipated like a solo singer, Davide was since the beginning available with all of us together to Stefano (Metatrone guitar player). From that moment it was born a wonderful relation made with friendship and fraternity. And we consider it a big God gift!"


Have you ever considered to record something experimentally together with Metatrone?
Salvo: "it would be surely a surprise and a news for us to record something, maybe in the next studio album, with some “metatronic” element. Why not ?"

How looks the promotion of Hypersonic? Do you play some live shows?
Salvo: "The promotion is focusing on realization of several live shows, with the presentation of the new DemoMCD. The we started an online selling of the disc and some merchandising stuff."


How people react on your music, on your live performances?
Ema: "The public demonstrated positively a particular interest for our music and for our strong melodies and it accompanies us always numerous with our live shows. The are great!"


I’m curios about artistic future of Hypersonic. Do you want to continue following the current style of the band? Have you in planes full length album?
Salvo: "Surely our genre is just collaudated and we'll continue for sure with this musical path , without refusing new influences and technical influences. Regarding the full-length, we can only say that is the next target that Hypersonic planned to reach as soon as they can."

Salvo and Ema: "Follow us always along out path hoping it will be long and full of nice pleasures. Stay christian ! Stay Hyper!"
