Abbiamo conosciuto i polacchi Illuminandi ed il loro gothic folk grazie a realease come la raccolta di Demo "The Beginning", il MCD " Tenebras meas" e il loro stupendo concerto al festival Elements Of Rock del 2007. Ora abbiamo la possibilità di conoscere meglio il gruppo grazie all'intervista seguente, fornita e realizzata dall'amico Immortalon della webmagazine polacca Basilica Igni al chitarrista e fondatore della band Jan Trebacz.

Come ti è venuta l’idea di creare la band, che al giorno d’oggi conosciamo come Illuminandi?
Jan Trebacz: "Da qualche parte intorno al 1998 ho incontrato Alek. Avevo un sacco di amici, che suonavano strumenti musicali, ed ero invogliato a far parte di una band. Avevamo già dei pezzi pronti e dovevamo solo arrangiarli. L’unione dei nostri sforzi diede come effetto la nascita della band. La prima formazione, era già in piedi da quasi un anno e mezzo, ma abbiamo iniziato a suonare insieme alla fine del 1999."

Allora cosa significa veramente Illuminandi? Qual è la sua genesi ?
JT: "Illuminandi significa “ciò che dev’essere illuminato” . Nella Prima Chiesa, questo termine fu usato nei riguardi di coloro che si avvicinavamo al sacramento del battesimo.
Per me questo nome è una specie di promessa, che include una speranza che noi otterremo, la gioia di essere con Dio. Inoltre penso che suoni intrigante. Ho deciso di utilizzare questa parola durante un ritiro con la mia attuale compagnia a Cracovia. Quando ci siamo messi a cercare per il nome della band ho provato a buttarlo lì ed in qualche modo è stato apprezzato."

Nel mondo del hristian metal siete già quasi una celebrità. La sentite la crescita di popolarità ?
JT: "Beh… dipende da quello che hai in mente. Lasciami dire: noi sappiamo sempre più che la gente interessata alla così chiamata scena metal cristiana ci conosce. Noi lo sappiamo, perché l’anno scorso avevamo lo stesso numero di date qui (in Polonia) che avevamo all’estero. Tutti questi erano festival organizzati da e per questo tipo di persone. Per “i regolari” ascoltatori di musica metal, invece, noi siamo completamente una band sconosciuta."


Dove suonate i vostri concerti di solito? Quali sono i vostri luoghi preferiti?
JT: "Intendi più spesso ? In Repubblica Ceca penso. Abbiamo un amico lì che organizza regolarmente qualcosa per noi o ci ottiene un pass per qualche genere di festival. Adoriamo suonare lì, è fantastico.
Spesso suoniamo con band che non hanno molto in comune con la cristianità, ma l’atmosfera qualche volta tende a essere anche migliore delle feste “cristiane”.
Comunque riguardo il nostro migliore concerto, personalmente direi che è stato l’Elements Of Rock 2007 in Svizzera. Il benvenuto riservatoci dal pubblico è stato… meraviglioso. Poi o potuto assistere al concerto di band che ammiro in una maniera incredibile come Virgin Black, My Silent Wake, Pantokrator o Sacrificium. E poi il suono lì…"

Che numero di copie stampate hanno raggiunto i vostri album?
JT: "A quanto ne sappiamo, della raccolta delle nostre registrazioni demo, che è "The Beginning", la Bombworks ne ha stampate solo 500 copie. La gente spesso ci chiede di questa registrazione. L’etichetta discografica ha menzionato a proposito di qualche pubblicazione in più, ma per ora questa cosa non si è ancora realizzata.
Per essere onesto, noi eravamo un poco imbarazzati riguardo il suono e la nostra capacità di suonare in alcune canzoni su quella pubblicazione, così non ci siamo sforzati a fare una ristampa. Penso che in alcuni casi questa registrazione ci causerebbe più danno che altro.
Intendo che se compri un album di una band, ti aspetti che sia più una registrazione unica che una raccolta, nella quale il suono delle tracce… beh… non è vivido. Intendo che qualche pubblicazione è ok per i fan, ma se qualcuno ci avesse ascoltato prima come in "The Beginning" non sarebbe stato convinto della nostra musica. Penso che da quella release siamo migliorati parecchio. Così noi consideriamo il MCD "Tenebras Meas" come nostro debutto. Fino adesso abbiamo ottenuto 1000 copie vendute, e ne stiamo per raggiungere altre 500."


Quali sono progetti della band Illuminandi per il futuro ? Quando saremo in grado di sentire le vostre nuove canzoni?
JT: "Stiamo al momento lavorando sul nostro materiale, abbiamo già cinque tracce pronte e ci stiamo lavorando su un’altra. Poi vorremmo registrare 'Wejdz! (Zacheusz)' [Entra! Zaccaria] dall’album "The Beginning", perchè non ne abbiamo mai fatto una versione studio. Abbiamo anche l’idea di registrare 3-4 nuove canzoni, ma non so in quanto tempo le finiremo.
Non vogliamo lavorare in fretta, così non abbiamo in progetto di registrare in studio prima dell’estate del 2009. Vogliamo registrare un album intero, non un altro MCD. Non è fuori questione che noi possiamo forse garantire un accesso all’ascolto delle due nuove tracce nell’autunno del 2008… ma tienilo in segreto, perché niente è ancora sicuro."

We had the possiblity to know the polish band Illuminandi and their music style gothic folk thaks to realeases like the Demo collection "The Beginning", the MCD " Tenebras meas" and their fantastic live show at Elements Of Rock festival 2007.
Now we can know more again about this combe thanks to this interview made by our friend Immortalon from the polish webmagazine Basilica Igni, to the guitar player and creator of the band Jan Trebacz.

Immortalon: How did you came up with an idea o creating the band, we currently know under the name of Illuminandi?
Jan Trebacz: "Somewhere around 1998 I met Alek. I had lots of friends, that were playing some instruments somehow and a great inner pressure, to start up the band. He had quite few lyrics ready, that only needed some arrangements. Uniting of our efforts gave the effect of birth of Illuminandi. The first line up, was being created for almost one and half year, but as a matter of fact we started playing together at the end of 1999."


So what does Illuminandi really means? What is the genesis?
JT: "Illuminandi means "what has to be illuminated". In the First Church, this term was used according to the people that were about to approach their sacrament of Baptism.
For me personally this name is a sort of a promise, that includes a hope that we will obtain the joy of being with God.
Beside that - I think - it sounds intriguingly. I first got contact with this name during a retreat we attended with my (in these days) fellowship in Krakow. When we were searching for the name of the band I threw my proposition and somehow it passed."

In christian metal realm your quite renown band already. Do you fill the growing popularity?
JT: "Well... It depends what you have in mind. Let me say it this way: We know more and more people interested with so called. "Christian metal scene" know us.
We know this, because in the past year we had almost the same amount of gigs here (Poland) as we have had abroad. All these were festivals organized by and for such people. Yet for " a regular" metal listeners, we are a completely unknown band."


Where do you play your shows usually? What's your favorite place of that kind?
JT: "Most often? In Czech Republic I suppose. We have a friend there, that regularly organizes something for us or gets us a pass for some kind of festivals. We love to play there, it's great. We often play with a bands that don't have much in common with Christianity, but the atmosphere sometimes tends to be even better than on "Christian" parties. However concerning our best show, I personally would say it was Elements Of Rock in Switzerland. The welcome that was served by the audience was just... astonishing. Beside that I was able to see the bands I admire incredibly, which are Inter Alia Virgin Black, My Silent Wake, Pantokrator or Sacrificium. And of course the sound there..."

So how large number printings did your albums get?
JT: "As far as we know, compilation of our demo recordings - "The Beginning" that is – Bombworks has printed 500 copies only. People often ask about this record.
The label mentioned something about additional issues, but the cause is silent now. To be honest, we are a little bit ashamed of the sound and our skills playing some songs on this issue, so we are not trying to make any efforts towards reprint.
I think in some cases this record would cause us more harm than help. I mean that if you buy an album of some band, you expect it to be integral record rather than a compilation, on which the tracks sound... well... not to bright. I mean some of the issues are ok for the fans, but if someone had no opportunity of hearing us before, he or she won't be convinced to our music after listening of "The Beginning". I think that since the time that these songs were made, we progressed quite a bit. So we treat "Tenebras Meas" MCD as our debut.
Up till now we have about a 1000 copies sold, and we' re getting rid of another 500 copies right now."


What are Illuminandi plans for the future? When will we be able to hear your new tunes?
JT: "We are currently working on the material, we have about five tracks ready and we're working on another one.
Beside that we would like to record 'Wejdz! (Zacheusz)' [enter! Zachariah] from "The Beginning" album, because it never came up as a studio version. We have also ideas for 3-4 new recordings, but I don't know how much more time will it take to finish them up.
We don't wanna work in rush, so we are not planning to hit the studio sooner than summer 2009. We want to record full length CD, not another mini-album. It is not out of a question that, we may perhaps grant an access for two new tracks in the fall of 2008... But keep that in secret, cause it's nothing certain yet."
