David Sandvick è il protagonista di quest'intervista, in quanto i Roots Of Tragedy sono la sua creatura, una one man band di death-doom che ha all'attivo un DemoMCD intitolato “Awakening Beyond”. Conosciamo questa nuova realtà...

Roots Of Tragedy non è la tua prima band. Prima hai suonato anche in un' altra band , gli Sjelehoest. Puoi dirci qualcosa di più sul tuo passato artistico ? Perchè ti sei dimesso da quella band ? Come e quando è nata l'idea di creare i Roots Of Tragedy ?
David: “Beh, ho iniziato prima di tutto perchè provavo un bisogno di fare qualcosa inerente al metal cristiano. Perchè la parola di Dio ha bisogno di essere divulgata anche attraverso questo genere. Così ho iniziato a far parte dei Sjelehøst. Questa band aveva suoni più malinconici e tetri e la produzione non era un granchè. Più tardi nel 2006, con oltre 25 canzoni ho deciso di iniziare qualcosa di nuovo e così sono nati i Roots Of Tragedy. Avevo un nuovo materiale di registrazione e tutto era pronto per fare qualcosa di nuovo.”

Perchè hai chiamato la band così ? Roots Of Tragedy suona come un qualcosa di strano e di misterioso. Avevi in mente qualcosa di speciale quando ci hai pensato?
“Ho iniziato prima di tutto a smanettare un pò con Photoshop, provando a creare un logo. Il mio primo logo mostrava un albero in uno scenario grigio e apocalittico. Roots Of Tragedy è un immagine del diavolo che cresce e si diffonde per tutta la terra. Un titolo metaforico.”

Tu sei il “cervello” della band e sicuramente, lavori in questa band da solo. Scrivi i testi, sei responsabile della musica. Tutto questo lavoro sembra difficile e non facile. Anche perchè non fai parte di alcuna etichetta. Come ti gestisci il lavoro ? Com'è il tuo processo creativo musicale?
“E' molto semplice, io scrivo la musica quando mi viene l'ispirazione. E la registro e mi occupo del mixaggio. Conosco un pò di gente in giro per il mondo che si occupa di musica e mi aiuta in questo campo.“

Hai mai pensato di far entrare nella band Roots Of Tragedy dei musicisti nuovi?
“Si , ma è difficile trovare la gente giusta che trasmetta lo spirito dei Roots Of Tragedy.”

Adesso parliamo del DemoMCD. Molto toccante e piena di emozioni è la canzone 'The Unborn (Abortion day)', a mio parere unica rispetto alle altre. Ma riconosco che viene dalla tua formazione precedenze, i Sjelehoest…Perchè hai deciso di mettere questa traccia anche nel DemoMCD “Awakening Beyond”? E' particolarmente significativa per te ?
“Si, l'aborto è un argomento molto importante per me. Perchè si tratta di omicidio colposo, in una maniera del tutto legale e il sistema legale è debole! Chi siamo noi per giudicare chi deve vivere e chi deve morire ?”

Puoi descrivere brevemente un' altra canzone tratta dal DemoMCD?
"Beh, 'Plague And The Divine' è anche lei una canzone speciale per me perchè si tratta di un'immagine della fine dei tempi e riguarda noi cristiani che stiamo insieme contro l'anticristito.”

Pare che tu abbia iniziato a preparare un nuovo disco. E' vero ? Puoi rivelarci un pò di progetti riguardo il tuo prossimo futuro?
“L'etichetta discografica E3 Recordings negli USA, ci ha ingaggiato e rilasceranno non solo il prossimo album, ma anche “Awakening Beyond” verrà venduto nelle prossimo futuro. Arriverà a luglio. Il nuovo album intitolato “Armageddon Unleashed” arriverà un pò più tardi. Ma avrà tonalità più dure e sarà più sinfonico.”

I Roots Of Tragedy rappresentano la scena della musica cristiana. Questo tuo modo di rappresentare l'arte attraverso la musica è solo un modo per far soldi o c'è anche un obiettivo personale più profondo ?
“L'unico obiettivo è di divulgare la Parola, e se alla gente piace la mia musica, è già abbastanza per me.”

Alla fine di questa intervista vorresti aggiungere un paio di parole per i nostri lettori e per tutta la gente che visita HolySteel?
“Si, ricordatevi chi è il Signore. E grazie per aver ascoltato la mia musica, ci incontreremo presto in paradiso. Stay Metal!

Roots Of Tragedy isn’t your first project. Before you played also in other formation, Sjelehoest. Can you tell something more about your artistic past? Why you resigned from that band? How and when was born the idea to create Roots Of Tragedy?
David: “Well, I started early to feel a need for making some christian Metal. Because the holy word, needed to be spread in that genre to. So I started Sjelehøst, also a one-member band. Sjelehøst was more melancholic and dark sounding, and the production was not so great. Later in 2006, with over 25 Sjelehøst-songs I decided to start something new. And then Roots of Tragedy was born. I had new recording-equipment and were ready to make something new.”

Why you called your project in following name? Roots Of Tragedy sounds a little strange and secretly. Did you have on your mind a special intention when you thought about it?
”It started with me fooling around with photoshop, trying to make a logo. The first logo showed a tree in grey and apocalyptic surroundings. Roots of Tragedy is a picture of the evil growing and spreading in the soil. A metaphoric title.”

You are the “main head” of the band and to be sure, you just work there properly alone. You write lyrics, you are responsible for the music. This all job seems to be hard and not easy. Also because you don’t belong to any label. How you organize yourself? How looks your process of creation the music?
”Its very simple, I write the music when it comes to me. And I record it and mix it. I have some people around the world that spreads the music, and help me in that way.”

Have you ever thought about possibility that to Roots Of Tragedy would to join some other musicians?
“Yeah, but its hard to find the right people to carry on the spirit of Roots of Tragedy.”

Let’s talk about the demo now. Very touched and full of emotions is the song “The unborn (Abortion day)” In my opinion unique between all the others. But I recognize it from your previous formation - Sjelehoest… Why you decided to put this track also on ”Awakening Beyond” ? Is it some kind of particular meaning for you?
“Yeah, abortion is very important topic for me. Because it is man-slaughter, in a legal way. And that is just sick! Who are we to judgde between life and death?"

Can you characterize shortly another song from the demo as well?
”Well, 'Plague And The Divine' is also a special song for me. Because its a picture of the end of times. And that we christians stand together against the antichrist.”

It seems that you’ve started to prepare a new record. Is it true? Are you able to discover a little your planes for the near future?
”E3 Recordings in USA, has agreed to sign me up. And they will release not only the upcoming album, but also “Awakening Beyond” will be released properly now. Its coming in July. The new album called “Armageddon Unleashed”, will be a bit later. But it will be harder and more symphonic.”

Roots Of Tragedy represents christian ‘s music scene. Perhaps through this your art isn’t a normal art only for commerce and money but you have also your personal goal within?
”The only goal is to spread the word, and if people like my music, that’s enough for me.”
