I Seven Horizons sono una band italiana erede ed ispirata da gruppi storici e leggendari come Dream Theater, Emerson Lake & Palmer ed anche Genesis. La differenza, rispetto ai gruppi citati, st nel fatto che i nostri dedicano anima e corpo non solo alla musica ma anche ad un chiaro messaggio cristiano. Vediamo di saperne di più chiacchierando con il tastierista Riccardo, all'indomani dell'uscita del loro primo DemoMCD "Seven Horizons".

Nella vostra bio vi presentate come un gruppo di progressive christian rock. Quali sono le vostre fonti di ispirazione nel campo secolare e cristiano?
"Ciao, come state? Innanzi tutto grazie per la vostra disponibilità. Devo ammettere che insieme a Giordano (batterista) sono rimasto stupito per quello che state facendo per promuovere il nostro lavoro!
Parlando dell’ispirazione posso dire che ognuno di noi ha "origini musicali" diverse che partono dal classico hard rock fino al prog passando dall'heavy. Penso che tutto quello che abbiamo ascoltato o ascoltiamo ci ha permesso di crescere e maturare musicalmente fino ad arrivare agl'attuali risultati. I gruppi? Dream Theater, Metallica, PlanetX, Mr.Big, Van Halen, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Toto e molti altri che portano avanti la "tradizione" del rock sotto tutte le sue sfaccettature!
Possiamo comunque dire che forse sono quello che si è soffermato un pò di più sull'aspetto prog mentre Giordano ha affrontato anche la parte Heavy di cui qualche riferimento cristiano lo possiamo trovare nei Petra. Devo anche ringraziare chi ci ha dato la possibilità di suonare in situazioni Gospel permettendoci così di avvicinarci ad artisti come Ron Kenoly, Kirk Franklin, Alvin Slaughter ecc.
Come potete notare c'è molta "confusione" ma puntiamo molto su questo aspetto perchè siamo certi che le idee che vengono fuori nei brani, oltre ad essere spiritualmente ispirate, racchiudono i gusti un pò di tutti!"

Come nasce il gruppo? Vedo che abitate decisamente distante... questo vi crea grosse difficoltà?
"Questa è una bella domanda... e devo dire che tornare indietro mi fa sorridere perchè ne abbiamo passate di cotte e di crude per arrivare fino ad oggi. Diciamo che "un giorno" ci siamo trovati a pensare: "perchè non proviamo a suonare nel modo che più ci soddisfa facendo un genere che piò attirare persone a Dio?". Parliamo di circa 2 anni fa dove alcuni obbiettivi sembravano irrangiungibili e la prima cosa che abbiamo dovuto affrontare è stata proprio LEI...LA DISTANZA!
Bene, a differenza però di altre situazioni però abbiamo fissato delle date per incontrarci senza sapere a che cosa si andava incontro e devo dire che avevo le lacrime agl'occhi quando dopo solo il primo week end abbiamo creato i brani inseriti nel DemoMCD! E' passato un pò di tempo da allora e gli arrangiamenti, le parti di chitarra, di batteria e di piano sono arrivati , ma sempre nella stessa maniera... prendendo forza e coraggio e fissando appuntamenti su appuntamenti per poter registrare sacrificando anche giornate lavorative (colgo l'occasione per ringraziare Rosario Girasole per il tempo che ha dedicato nell'aiutarci a registrare la batteria). Investire nel campo della musica (e dell'arte in generale) è un salto nel buio ma noi abbiamo Colui che illumina la nostra strada! Bisogna avere Fede ma soprattutto dimostrare di aver coraggio nel fare il primo passo poi tutto il resto viene da sè. Ancora oggi non è facile incastrare le date per prove, registrazioni etc. ma siamo spiritualmente e mentalmente disposti a dei sacrifici per quello in cui crediamo fermamente: i Seven Horizons!"

"Seven Horizons" è il vostro primo lavoro, un DemoMCD di 4 brani. Siete soddisfatti di quel che avete prodotto o cambiereste qualcosa?
"Si, ci riteniamo soddisfatti di quello che abbiamo registrato anche se ci rendiamo conto che un "home recording" non è paragonabile ad un lavoro eseguito in studio. Siamo partiti con poche conoscenze tecniche e man mano che siamo andati avanti abbiamo sfruttato i consigli di molte persone che ci circondano (questo è il problema di chi come noi non ha fondi per autoprodursi e promuoversi). Devo dire che al di là del mastering, le voci, le melodie, i riff... tutto si è incastrato perfettamente per il risultato che volevamo ottenere. Nell'home recording c'è sempre però un problema, che più ti riascolti e più vorresti perfezionarti quindi ad un certo momento abbiamo dovuto mettere un "punto" a quello che stavamo facendo iniziando a pensare così anche alla promozione del lavoro."


Voi suonate musica cristiana. quali sono i messaggi cristiani più importanti contenuti nelle lyrics di questi 4 brani?
"Penso che il messaggio che abbiamo trattato e continueremo a trattare è principalmente quello della Salvezza e della Vita Eterna in Cristo morto e risorto.
Ci piace molto la praticità forse perche è quello che le persone vogliono… soluzione ai loro problemi al fine di trovare la pace interiore e vivere con tranquillità coscienti di essere protetti da Dio; noi suoniamo per poter dire che c’è un’alternativa alle delusioni della vita, agli scoraggiamenti, ai “punti di non ritorno” in cui ci ritroviamo a volte. Ognuno di noi ha un passato, ognuno di noi ha sbagliato ma Gesù è morto sulla croce per una seconda possibilità e non sarà nessun altro al di fuori di Lui a darci la forza per risalire, per tirarci su di morale, per avere pace, per guardare chi ci circonda con occhi diversi, per uscire da quelle situazioni e sentenze che sembrano definitive.
Questo è quello che i Seven Horizons vogliono trasmettere."

Avete anche un'attività live? Se si potete dirci qualcosa?
"Ancora non siamo partiti con un'attività live ma abbiamo per ora qualche contatto per la partecipazione a festival rock cristiani. Diciamo che gran parte del tempo trascorso è stato usato per capire gli obbiettivi di Seven Horizons e il "come muoversi" una volta avuto in mano un demo con delle potenzialità. Sfrutteremo questi mesi estivi per arrivare a settembre pronti per eventuali proposte musicali italiane ed estere. "


Siete entrati in contatto con la realtà christian? Cosa ci potete dire a riguardo?
"Parlando invece delle esperienze in ambito “ecclesiale” siamo coinvolti rispettivamente nelle nostre Comunità nell'ambito della Lode & Adorazione e dedichiamo molto tempo alla preparazione di eventi/convegni cristiani per la denominazione Evangelica Apostolica. Parallelamente io e Giordano portiamo avanti anche un progetto dedicato esclusivamente all'evangelizzazione con un gruppo chiamato Across Generation con il quale proponiamo solo cover rock cristiano (da Neal Morse, Creed ai Petra).
Diamo molta importanza al servizio della Lode & Adorazione durante i culti domenicali o infrasettimanali perché siamo pienamente coscienti che prima di tutto, prima di essere musicisti, prima di prendere in mano un qualsiasi strumento, prima di salire su un palco dobbiamo essere Adoratori."


Nella band quali sono le vostre confessioni religiose?
"Facciamo tutti parte della Chiesa Evangelica Apostolica ma per quanto riguarda i punti di fede e la spiegazione dettagliata di quello in cui crediamo vi rimando al link ufficiale della nostra denominazione: http://www.apostolica.it/crediamo.html"


Cosa sta a significare l'immagine di copertina del DemoMCD, una distesa di deserto e una strada che sembra infinita?
"Devo dire la verità a riguardo, tutto parte da un brano (scritto e non inserito) riguardante Gesù nel deserto e le tentazioni che ha vissuto quando si trovava da solo ma il tutto è maturato fino ad arrivare all'immagine che vedi: la persona in lontananza rappresenta appunto il Messia che sta passando su questa strada infinita che va all'orizzonte (da qui il termine Horizons) ma il significato fondamentale stà nel fatto che la figura si allontana e non ci viene incontro... questo perchè Gesù passa ma stà a noi seguirlo, non siamo obbligati ad uscire dalle nostre "situazioni di deserto" ma ci viene data una possibilità nella vita e siamo liberi di sfruttarla oppure no."

Come componete solitamente?
"Parto dal presupposto che musicalmente c'è una grande fiducia musicale reciproca e forse questo è uno dei pilastri dei Seven Horizons perchè la distanza si sente anche in fase compositiva. Io mi occupo principalmente della parte armonica/melodica dei brani incastrando il tutto con la ritmica propostami da Giordano quando ci s'incontra. Quando il brano è strutturalmente terminato si pensa alle parole ma fino ad ora è sempre stato lui a scriverle.
Se vogliamo parlare anche della parte "ispirativa"... è un pò complicato perchè non nego di vivere la preparazione dei nostri brani in tutte le 24 ore della giornata fermandomi a volte a registrare vocalmente degli stacchi con il cellulare per ricordarmeli quando arrivo a casa!!! Molto per me è il rapportare la Parola di Dio con quello che vivo e vedo vivere nella vita di tutti i giorni legando il tutto alla musica che creo. Il lavoro che vieni poi fatto è di Preghiera e in questo caso è basilare il sapersi "isolare" e il saper piegare le proprie ginocchia rivolgendo preghiere al Cielo affinchè il lavoro che stà per nascere "funzioni" sotto tutti gli aspetti. "


Avete pronti altri brani oltre a quelli già scritti e presentati? Siete in cerca di un'etichetta per un primo album vero e proprio?
"Assolutamente si, alcuni brani sono pronti, su altri invece ci stiamo ancora lavorando. Pensiamo di arrivare al nostro primo appuntamento live pronti per dire "I Seven Horizons ci sono!!!" e nel frattempo cerchiamo un'etichetta che possa produrci e darci la possibilità di uscire sul mercato internazionale.
Stiamo creando prevalentemente contatti esteri proprio per una nostra decisione inquando abbiamo visto che il rock in Italia (senza fare discriminazioni tra cristiano e non), per come lo intendiamo noi, non è attivo ma basta spostarsi in Germania, Inghilterra per poter vedere/avere delle prospettive diverse.
Ci piacerebbe molto che ci venisse data la possibilità di entrare in studio ma in questo momento diamo ancora più importanza all'attività live per poter vivere sulla propria pelle, attimo dopo attimo il messaggio che abbiamo deciso di portare!"


Ok, concludete pure l'interviste come più vi aggrada...

Seven Horizons are an italian band inspired by legendary bands like Dream Theater, Emerson Lake & Palmer and also Genesis. The difference is that Seven Horizons are in mission for a christian message really clear in their lyrics. we talk about with the keyboard player Riccardo, when is out their first demoMCD "Seven Horizons".

In your biography you present yourselves as a progressive christian rock band. What are your inspirations in the secular and christian field?
"Hi, how are you ? Thank you for your availability. I must admit that together to Giordano I remained astonished for what you are doing to promote our work!
Talking about the inspiration I can say that everyone of us has different “musical origins” that start from the classic hard rock till to progressive metal passing through the heavy metal. I think that everything we listened and we continue to listen allowed us to grow and to mature musically arriving to the actual results.
The bands ? Dream Theater, Metallica, PlanetX, Mr.Big, Van Halen, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, Toto and many others that bring the “tradition” of Rock through all its facets!!! However we can say that maybe I am the person that took more attention on the Prog aspect while Giordano took more attention to the Heavy Metal aspect about which we can see some reference to the Petra band. I must also thank the people who gave us the possibility to play in Gospel situation letting us to be near to artists like Ron Kenoly, Kirk Franklin, Alvin Slaughter etc... As you can notice there is a lot of “confusion” but we point a lot on this aspect because we are sure that the ideas that comes outside the lyrics, other than being spiritually inspired, they contain the tastes of every ones!!! "

How was born the band? I notice that you live decidedly distant… do this thing create you big difficulties ?
"This is a good question … and I must say that returning back with the time it makes me smile because we passed a lot of hard moments till today. Let’s say that “a day” in the past we met to think : “why don’t we try to play in the manner that we like most, playing a genre that could attract more people to God ? “. I’m talking about two years ago where some targets seemed impossible to reach and the first thing that we had to face it was this … THE DISTANCE!
Well, but at the difference with other situations we decided some dates to meet to each other without know to what we were going to, and I must say that I had the tears to my eyes and after just only the first weekend we created the songs for the Demo!!! It’s passed some time since that period and the arrangements, the guitar parts, the drum parts, the keyboard parts arrived, but always in the same manner… taking power and courage and establishing appointments on appointmens to record sacrifying also the working days (I take the occasion to thank Rosario Girasole for the time that dedicated us to help u sto record the drum).
I can say a thing, GOD IS FAITHFUL and He pays always the efforts to raise His Name.
Investing money to the music (and to the art in general) it’s a jump to the dark but we have The One that illuminates our path! We must have faith but above all demonstrate to have courage to do the first step and then the rest it comes by itself. Yet today it’s not easy to fix the dates for the proofs, records, etc. but we are spiritually and mentally disposal to do sacrifices for what we steadly believe : the Seven Horizons!"

"Seven Horizons" is your first production, a DemoMCD with 4 songs. Are you satisfied for what you produced or would you change something ?
"Yes, we are satisfied of what we recorded even if we know that a “home recording” it’s not the same thing of a studio recording. We started with few technical knowledge and time by time we proceeded listening the suggestions of much people near to us (this is the problem of the people like us that hasn’t the money for self producing and self promoting ). I must say that beyond mastering, voices , melodies , riffs… everything fixed perfectly for the result we wanted to obtain. However durino the home recording there is always a problem, that as more as you listen yourself as more as you would like to improve yourself so at a certain moment we had to put a “point” to what we were doing starting to think also to the promotion of the record. "


You play christian music. What are the most important christian messages contained along the lyrics of the four songs?
"I think that the message we treated and that we continue to deal with , it’s mainly the one regarding the Safety and the Eternal Life in Christ died and rose again.
We like a lot the practicality maybe because this is the thing the people want…a solution to their problems to find the interior peace and living with tranquillity and conscious to be protected by God; we play to be able to say that there is an alternative to the delusions of the life, to the discouragements, to the “points of not return” in which we can find ourselves sometimes.
Everyone of us has a past, everyone of us was wrong but Jesus died on the cross for a second possibility and it will be not anyone other than Him to give us the power to go up again, to be in high morale , to have the peace, to watch the ones around us with different eyes, to go out from those situations and sentences that seem definitive.
This is what the Seven Horizons want to communicate. "

Have you also a live activity ? If yes , can you tell us something about it?
"We haven’t yet started with a live activity but we have at the moment some contacts thanks to the participation to Christian festival rock. Let’s say that a lot of time it was used to understand the targets of Seven Horizon and how we could move a time we would have recorded a demo with potentiality. We’ll take advantage of these summer months to arrive to september ready for eventual musical proposals from Italy and from abroad."


Are you in contact with the christian music scene? What can you say about it?
"Despite, talking about the ecclesiastical experiences we are involved in our christian community Lode & Adorazione (Praise & Adoration) ambit and we dedicate a lot of time to the settings of christian events\meetings for the denomination Evangelical and Apostolical. In the same time me and Giordano have also a project , dedicated exclusively to the evangelization, with a band called Across Generation with whom we suggest only christian cover rock songs (from Neal Morse, Creed, till to Petra). The service in Lode & Adoration is very important for us during the Sunday celebrations or during the week because we are fully conscious that first of all , bifore being musicians, before taking an instrument with our hands, before going on a stage, we must be Adorers. "


What are your confessions?
"We are all a part of the Evangelical Apostolical Church but regarding our faith and the detailed explanation of what we believe , I remind you to the official link of our denomination : http://www.apostolica.it/crediamo.html "


What is the meaning of the cover image on you DemoMCD, with an expanse of desert and a road that seems infinite ?
"I must tell you the truth about it, everything began by a lyric (written and not inserted ) regarding Jesus in the desert and the temptations that he faced when he was alone but everything was matured till to arrive to the image you see: the person far represents the Messiah that proceeds on this infinite way that goes to horizons (here the term Horizons ) but the fundamental meaning is that the figure goes away and he doesn’t come near to us… this because Jesus passes but the decision to follow him belongs to us, we aren’t obliged to go out from our “desert conditions” but He gives us a possibility in our life and we are free to take advantage of it or not. "

How do you usually compose ?
"I start by saying that musically there is a big musical reciprocal trust and maybe this is one of the pillars of Seven Horizons because we can feel the distant also during the composition phase. My job s working on the harmonic/melodic aspect of the songs fixing everything with the rhythmic suggested by Giordano when I meet him. When the song is structurally ended we can start to think to the words but until to now it was always him to write them.
If we want to talk also about the “inspiration” aspect… it’s more complicated because it’s not a lie if I tell you that I live the making of our songs in all the 24 hours of the day recording also some vocal parts with my cellular phone to listen them again when I’m at home!
It’s very important for me comparing the word of God with my life and with what I see everyday chaining It to the music I create. The work then it’s the pray and it’s important isolating ourselves and to bend ours knees praying to the sky praying that our work will be right."


Have you other songs just ready, other the ones just written and presented? Are you searching for a label for a first real album?
"Absolutely yes, some songs are ready, about the other songs we are yet working on them. We think to arrive to our first live appointment ready to say “Seven Horizons are here!” and in the same time we are searching for a label that can produce our works and can give us the possibility to come out to the international market. We’re having for the most of time foreign contacts since the time we noticed that the Rock music in italy (without discriminations between christian and not), for the kind of rock we mean , it’s not active but if you move to Germany, England you can see different perspectives. We would like a lot that to have the opportunity to enter to a recording studio but in this moment we give yet more importance to the live activity to live on our skin, moment after moment the message we decided to communicate!"
