La storica band di thrash metal degli anni 90 è tornata dopo più di quindici anni di silenzio! “The Dust Of Years” è un CD fresco e diverso che propone molte curiosità e novità al sound dei nostri. Il padre del progetto dei Seventh Angel – Ian Arkley – con la sua solita gentilezza e pazienza risponde a tutte le nostre domande, anche a quelle inopportune. La conversazione verte soprattutto sull’ultimo album, sull’incidente di Simon (chitarra e voce) e sui treni merce…

Per iniziare, una domanda, che probabilmente tutti ti porrebbero in questo momento: che cosa vi ha portato a tornare? Da quindici anni non si sapeva più nulla della band… quali sono state le circostanze? Com’è che adesso vi possiamo anche ascoltare il vostro nuovo album?

"Eravamo tutti impegnati nei nostri progetti e ci siamo discostati l’uno dall’altro negli anni. Abbiamo organizzato una festa alcuni anni fa e abbiamo iniziato a discutere sulla possibilità di riformare la band. Siamo diventati ancora tutti amici intimi e ci siamo divertiti molto a lavorare insieme. Quando noi siamo stati invitati a suonare al Nordic Fest abbiamo deciso che era veramente il momento di mettere insieme le cose e abbiamo iniziato a lavorare sulle nuove canzoni e imparare ancora quelle vecchie."

Durante questo lungo periodo eravate, diciamo, separati l’uno dall’altro. Avete suonato in diversi gruppi con stili diversi; imparando e acquisendo stili diversi… che genere di innovazione avete portato nel progetto dei Seventh Angel; e poi… c’è qualcosa che rimane immutato ?

"Abbiamo tutti portato la nostra esperienza come musicisti e di vita e abbiamo notato che tutto andava bene sia nel lavorare insieme a livello musicale che come amici. Lo stile è diverso rispetto ai tempi passati e non abbiamo voluto rimaneggiare il passato, ma più che altro fare qualcosa di rilevante al punto tale che ci siamo tutti divertiti."

Alcuni vostri fan hanno avuto la possibilità di vedervi all’Elements Of Rock in Svizzera quest’anno. Come ricordi questo festival? Ti ricordi un episodio divertente o qualcosa, che ti ha sorpreso o ti ha deluso? Puoi condividere con noi la tua esperienza?

"E’ stato un festival fantastico! Avevo suonato lì con i My Silent Wake, sapevo quello che mi aspettava. Eravamo ben visti da Sven e la sua famiglia (ci avevo suonato anche nel 2007 coi MSW) nel mezzo della campagna con la vista di montagne innevate in cima e abbiamo vissuto dei momenti stupendi. Riguardo i momenti divertenti: dovevamo suonare in un parco lì nel luogo, ma Simon ha continuato a farsi male agli stinchi colpendo in continuazione degli oggetti... pareva veramente soffrire ma non sembrava che gliene fregasse qualcosa. Ho registrato in video questi episodi."

Alla fine del nuovo album avete inserito la canzone “Oswiecim”, che tocca il tema del campo di concentramento di Auschwitz-Birkenau che si trova nel sud della Polonia. Ci puoi dire qualcosa di più sulla storia di questa canzone? Chi è l’autore?

"La canzone è stata scritta da Simon e Mark. Simon ha scritto il testo, che è stato ispirato da una visita che fece alcuni anni fa.”

Un altro pezzo particolare sembra essere 'Abèlard And Heloise'. Perché avete raccontato la nota storia di questo amore contrastato?

"Sebbene io e Simon abbiamo scritto la musica, questa era dal punto di vista dei testi la canzone di Mark. Non avevo sentito la storia prima che Mark me la raccontasse, ma è affascinante se hai modo di leggerla o di fartela raccontare."

Sicuramente hai una traccia preferita dall’album “The Dust Of Years”. Quale composizione ha un unico e particolare significato per te ?

"La mia preferita dovrebbe essere probabilmente la canzone di Simon ‘The Raven Sky’ o ‘Abelard And Heloise’ . Ovviamente i testi che io ho scritto mi toccano particolarmente dato che sono tratti da varie esperienze personali.”

Che cosa vuoi esprimere con la tua arte ai giovani? Ti senti guidato con se tu fossi in una missione o vorresti trasmettere dei messaggi?

"Non c’è un particolare ordine del giorno per i Seventh Angel, come per i My Silent Wake; spero che i testi significhino qualcosa per la gente e che loro possano trovarvi conforto o qualcosa di speciale."

Puoi commentare il tuo personale rapporto con Dio? Potresti consigliare qualcosa a chi lo sta ancora cercando?

"Vorrei tenere queste cose per me stesso che discuterne troppo in pubblico dato che le parole possono essere fraintese e si potrebbero creare delle voci strane; come conseguenza la gente inizia a parlare di cose senza senso sui forum. Strano come le persone parlino di altri senza tenere in considerazione la delicatezza dei loro sentimenti, specialmente quando queste cose avvengono sui forum ‘cristiani’."

Credo che la musica non sia la sola attività di cui tu ti occupi. Hai altre passioni, interessi? Cosa riempie le tua vita? Com’è la tua vita di ogni giorno?

"Io lavoro guidando i treni merce e sono interessato a quanto concerne le ferrovie, specialmente per i treni a vapore e l’aspetto storico. Mi divertono i film e ovviamente un sacco di musica diversa, da quella medievale a quella black metal. Ho sempre amato la campagna, i boschi e le vecchie rovine. Sono anche un avido fan di commedie (principalmente quelle britanniche).”

Vorresti aggiungere qualcosa per chiudere questa intervista per i lettori HolySteel?

"Grazie per tutto il vostro supporto e il continuo interesse nei Seventh Angel. Se siamo una nuova band per voi... benvenuti!”

Thrash metal monument from the 90’s are back with the new record after more than 15 years of silence! Fresh and different sound “The Dust Of Years” brings many curiosities. The father of Seventh Angel’s project- Ian Arkley - with his usual kindness, patiently responds all our questions even these inconvenient. The conversation ran fluently upon the last album, incident of Simon and freight trains…

To start with, one question, which probably everyone would like to give you in this moment: What caused you decided to revert (return)? Since almost more than 15 years we could not hear too much from you…so what about circumstances? How all it happened that now we can see you with the new record?

"We had all been doing our own projects and had drifted away from each other over the years. We all got together for a party some years ago and started talking about the possibility of reforming. We have all become very close friends again and we enjoy working together very much. When we were invited to play Nordic Fest we decided it was time to really get things together and we started working on new songs and learning the old ones again.”

During this long period you were - we can say- separated each other. You played in various, stylishly different groups; learning and acquiring distinct practice… What kind of innovation you brought in Seventh Angel’s project; and then… Is it something what remains unchanged?

"We have all brought our own styles of playing and have found that they all still work together really well musically and as friends. The style is different from the old days as we did not want to rehash the past, but rather do something relevant that we all enjoyed.”

Some of your fans had possibility to see you on Elements Of Rock in Switzerland this year. How you remember this festival? Do you have on mind one funny situation or some thing, which surprised you or disappointed? Can you share with us your experiences?

"It was a great festival! I had played there with My Silent Wake, so kind of knew what to expect. We were well looked after by Sven and his family (as MSW were in 2007) in the middle of the countryside with views of the snow capped mountains, and we all had a great time. As for funny moments: We had a session playing in a park near to the venue, on this roundabout thing and Si managed to graze his shin - looked really painful but he didn't seem to care. I got it all on film.”

At the end of the new album you put the song “Oswiecim”, which touches the theme of concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau localised in the south of Poland. Can you tell something more about story of this song? Who is the author?

"The song was written by Simon and Mark. Simon wrote the lyrics, which were inspired by a visit he made there some years ago.”

Another one particular piece seems to be 'Abélard and Heloise', inspired by the letters of Abélard and Heloise. Why you chose exactly these personalities?

"Although Simon and I wrote the music, this was Mark's song lyrically. I had not heard the story before Mark told me about it, but it is fascinating and well worth finding out about if you get a chance."

For sure you has one favourite track from “The Dust Of Years”: the melody, the lyric you feel closer to your heart than the others. Which composition has unique, particular meaning for you?

"My favourite would probably be Simon's song 'The Raven Sky' or 'Abelard And Heloise'. Obviously the lyrics I wrote are close to my heart as they are written out of various personal experiences. "

What do you want express by your art for the young people? Are you guided by some special mission, message you would like to transfer?

"There is no particular agenda to Seventh Angel, though as with My Silent Wake, I hope that the lyrics mean something to people and that they find comfort or something special from them.”

How looks your personal contact with God? Could you give a counsel the person, who is still searching for Him?

"I like to keep this pretty much to myself these days and not discuss too much in public as things can be misconstrued and rumours start, people start talking nonsense on forums etc. Strange how people talk about other people as if they won't be reading it and as if their feelings don't matter, especially when this is done on 'christian' message boards.”

If you let one question from your private life. As I guess the music isn’t your sole, exclusive thing you do. Do you have other passions, hobbies? What fulfils your lives? How looks your usual day?

"I work driving freight trains and have a general interest in railways, especially the steam side of things and the historic aspect. I enjoy films and obviously a lot of different music from mediaeval up to some black metal. I have always loved the countryside and woods and old buildings. I am also an avid fan of (mainly British) comedy."
