The tyranny of extreme genius

Giunto al terzo album intitolato "Anagogic Tyranny" il gruppo di Dharok è ormai diventato una vera e propria band e ora non tutto gravita intorno alla figura del fondatore e mentore canadese. Proprio chiacchierando con Dharok vediamo di scoprire qualcosa in più di questa band dedita ad un ottimo death metal d'impatto.

Poco tempo fa abbiamo parlato della vostra terza release, “Anagogic Tiranny” e la prima notizia interessante è che adesso la band è una vera band con tre membri e veri musicisti professionisti. Che cosa puoi dirci in proposito a questi cambiamenti nella formazione a partire dall'inizio della vostra carriera?

"Sono entrato a far parte dei Sympathy agli inizi degli anni 90. In origine eravamo in cinque: due chitarristi, un bassista, un batterista e un cantante. Abbiamo fatto solo piccoli concerti e registrato una demo e un CD. Dato che eravamo tutti giovani, alcuni membri della band hanno iniziato a intraprendere altre strade e la band in pratica si sciolse. In quel periodo speravo ancora che avremmo potuto suonare in futuro mentre scrivevo e registravo da solo della musica e la rendevo nota agli altri membri della band. Ma a quel punto dopo un pò anche io mi arresi e persi interesse.
Poi, nel 2000, qualcuno mi ha convinto a riprendere le mie vecchie registrazioni e a provare a stipulare un contratto di registrazione. A quel tempo io lavoravo part time in studio e a piccole spese ero in grado di registrare tutti i pezzi Demo di “Invocation”. Spedii tutte le Semo a varie etichette discografiche e solo poche di queste mi risposero e in base alle offerte che ricevetti, decisi di lavorare con la Fear Dark.
Dopo aver registrato due album con la Fear Dark i Sympathy hanno accresciuto il loro valore e hanno firmato un contratto con l'etichetta discografica Bombworks Records. I nuovi membri entrati a far parte della band sono Jeff Lewis dalla band Abolishment of Hate e Incursion, precedentemente nei Mortification e il batterista Jim Austin dalla band Into Eternity. Sono molto contento che adesso facciano parte dei Sympathy."

Siete soddisfatti del lavoro che avete svolto per “Anagogic Tyranny”? Va tutto bene adesso per voi?

"C'è sempre qualcosa che voglio cambiare – così funziona il modo di procedere per registrare un album; niente è mai assolutamente perfetto e potrebbe migliorare ogni volta. Dettoquesto posso dire che mi ritengo soddisfatto.”

Ho scritto nell'intervista che il messaggio cristiano che compare nei vostri testi deriva dalla sofferenza e dalla disperazione. Potete spiegarci meglio il vostro punto di vista in proposito?

"Beh , non mi piace molto parlare del significato dei testi. Io penso che i migliori testi siano quelli che diventano pieni di significato per gli ascoltatori. Dico solo che molte cose che sono finite sui testi sono di carattere personale, ma penso che si tratti di una parte dell'esperienza artistica che gli ascoltatori devono “scoprire”, indivuando e assimilando il significato dei testi.”

Scusa se insisto ma puoi spiegarci qualcosa in più dei messaggi di tutte le canzoni del nuovo album?

"Preferirei di no. Penso che rovinerei anche quei testi che esprimono già di per sé il loro significato. L'ispirazione nello scrivere i testi è stata tratta da una serie di libri che hanno per autore R. Scott Baker. Se la gente fosse interessata nel capire meglio i testi, sarebbe un buon posto da cui iniziare. Ma attenzione: i libri sono molto brutali e vi interromperanno per farvi riflettere.”

Che differenze ci sono secondo te tra quest'album e il primo album “Invocation” o il secondo “Arcane Path”? In particolare molte recensioni dicono che il vostro primo album presenta influenze black metal... sei d'accordo?

"Si sono d'accordo. Penso che ci siano un sacco di riferimenti black metal su "Invocation".
Ma ancora ritengo che "Invocation" sia un album di death metal. La produzione del CD aveva un suond tipicamente black metal di vecchio stampo: duro e consistente, ma i riff erano sicuramente death. "Arcane Path" era simile al precedente, ma penso che l'influenza death metal qui fosse molto più forte rispetto a quella black metal. Nel nuovo album penso che ci sia ancora un tocco black metal, ma la composizione sonora di Jeff è di tipo thrash metal; inoltre il suono di Jim è molto progressive. Così possiamo dire che la combinazione di stili diversi sia molto più complessa."

In “Anagogic Tyranny” suoni con dei veri grandi artisti come il chitarrista Jeff Lewis (Mortification, Abolishment Of Hate, Incursion) e il batterista Jim Austin (Into Eternity). Puoi descriverci il lavoro di questi due artisti? Come hai prodotto il materiale che possiamo trovare in questa release?

E' fantastico lavorare con Jeff e Jim. Sono molto professionali e hanno solo migliorato le cose. Per "Anagogic Tyranny" e Jeff abbiamo scritto da soli le canzoni. Non avevamo mai lavorato così tanto insieme. Ci siamo passati a vicenda le tracce per poterle giudicare, ma nessuno di noi aveva aggiunto alcunchè di significativo al lavoro dell'altro. Una volta che abbiamo scritto i pezzi e li abbiamo arrangiati questi sono stati spediti a Jim per provarle. In questo modo anche lui ha potuto esser coinvolto nella composizione delle canzoni perchè vive lontano da noi. La prossima non avremo lo stesso problema. ”

Qual'e' il significato dell'immagine nella seconda pagina del libretto con l'ingresso di una chiesa e un simbolo pieno di luce?

"Non c'è molto da spiegare riguardo al fatto che ci sia luce nell'ingresso di una chiesa. La chiesa funge da simbolo e non come qualcosa di tipo letterale o esplicito nei testi. Ma onestamente, sarei più interessato nel sapere che cosa ne pensate voi a proposito. E quello che l'altra gente pensa su cosa possa significare. Per me è questa la parte interessante."

Che cosa avete scritto nel retro del libretto: “The meek shall inherit the earth" (“La persona mansueta erediterà la Terra“)?

"Si, ma presta attenzione al fatto che c'è di più rispetto al testo. Non è solo “La persona mansueta erediterà la Terra”. Dice anche che “The strong will destroy it first” (colui che e' forte prima la distruggerà)."

Sei in contatto con altre band cristiane ? So che hai lavorato anche per altre band...

"Sono in contatto solo con poche band. Le cose penso che siano cambiate negli ultimi cinque anni. Era abitudine tenersi in contatto online tra le band per quanto riguarda la scena metal estrema. Non ne è rimasto molto. Parte di quelle band ha deciso di evolversi e continuare con la propria vita, un'altra parte è in difficoltà nel vendere gli album in questi giorni. E se non puoi vendere un album per coloro che ascoltano la musica, per cosa li spendi a fare i soldi? Devi essere motivato dal desiderio di fare arte. ”

Quando suonerete in Europa, o meglio ancora in Italia ?

"Mi piacerebbe. Se potessi organizzare un piccolo tour in Europa, apprezzeremmo veramente la possibilità di essere in grado di venire e vedere l'Italia. Io sono un grande fan della civiltà classica, probabilmente mi perderei a guardare le antiche rovine. Sarebbe molto divertente. ”

Adesso scrivi un vero cristiano-death-metal saluto per i lettori di HolySteel"

"Saluti a tutti. Ricordatevi che i tempi bui arriveranno. Tempi che possono richiedervi di compiere grandi sacrifici per ciò in cui credete. Preparatevi a rimanere in piedi e a difendere quello in cui credete e quello in cui amate. Rifornitevi di conoscenza. Cercate la saggezza. E conquistate per mezzo dell' amore. E ricordatevi sempre perchè lo state facendo!”

With the third album the band of Dharok is now a real band with many musician and not a project that has in the leader every idea.
We will try to discover more about the new release "Anagogic Tyranny" and about the band talking with canadian musician Dharok...

We wrote few time ago your third release, "Anagogic Tyranny" and the first interesting thing is that now the band is a real band with three members and really professional musicians. What can you tell us about this changes in the line-up from the beginning when you did all?

"I started Sympathy started back in the early 90’s. Originally, there were 5 of us: two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, and a vocalist. We did a few small local concerts and recorded a Demo and a CD, but that was about it. Because we were all really young, soon some of the band members started to leave to do other things with there lives and the band basically fell apart. At that time, I was still hoping that we could get together to play sometime in the future so I was writing and recording music on my own to teach the other band members. But that became pointless after a while, so I gave up and lost interest.
Then in 2000, someone convinced me to break out my old recordings and try to get a recording contract. Since I was working part time at a studio then, I was able to record all the demo materials for “Invocation” at little expense. I sent the demos to different labels and a few responded, and of the offers that I was given, I decided to work with Fear Dark.
After recording two albums with Fear Dark, Sympathy expanded and joined the Bombworks Records label. The new members are guitarist Jeff Lewis from Abolishment of Hate and Incursion, formerly of Mortification; and drummer Jim Austin from Into Eternity. I am very happy that they are part of Sympathy now.”

Are you satisfied about the work in "Anagogic Tyranny"? everything is good for you now?

"I will always hear things that I want to change - that’s just the way recording goes, nothing is ever absolutely perfect and it could always be a bit better. But overall, I am satisfied.”

I wrote in the review that the christian message in your lyrics comes from suffering and desperation. Can you explain better your point of view about this?

"Well, I don’t really like to talk about what the lyrics mean. I think that the best lyrics are the ones that become meaningful to the listeners. I will say that a lot of what went into the lyrics was very personal, but I think that it is part of the artistic experience if listeners have to “find” their own meaning in the lyrics.”

Excuse but I ask you again if you can you explain something more about the messages of all the songs of the new album...

"I’d rather not. I think that would rather ruin the lyrics to have them explained precisely. The inspiration for the lyrics was a handful of characters from a series of books by author R. Scott Bakker. If people are interested in understanding the lyrics better, that would be the place to start. But a bit of a warning: the books are very brutal and they will really make you stop and think.”

What are in your opinion the differences between this album and the first "Invocation" or the second "Arcane Path"? In particular many reviews about your first album talk about black metal influences... do you agree?

"I do agree. I think that there were a lot of black metal sounding moments on "Invocation". But I still think that Invocation was a death metal album. The production sounded an older black metal sound: harsh and thin. But the riffs were death metal riffs. "Arcane Path" was similar, but I think the death metal influence was much stronger than the black metal influence on that one. And on the new one, I think that the black metal sound is still there a bit, but Jeff’s writing and playing sound very thrashy, and Jim’s playing sound very progressive. So the combination of styles got a lot more complicated."

In "Anagogic Tyranny" you play with really great artists like the guitar player Jeff Lewis (Mortification, Abolishment Of Hate, Incursion) and the drummer Jim Austin (Into Eternity). How can you descrive the work with these two artists? How sis you wrote the material that we can find in the release?

"Jeff and Jim are great to work with. They are very professional and have only made everything better. For "Anagogic Tyranny", Jeff and I wrote all the songs individually. We really didn’t work together that much. We would sort of pass our songs to each other for approval, but neither of us really had anything significant to add to each other’s work. Once we had the songs written and arranged, we sent them to Jim for him to rehearse. He was able to be involved in the writing this time because he lives quite far away. But we won’t have that same problem this next time."

What is the meaning of the image in second page of booklet with the entrance of a church and a symbol full of light?

"There isn’t too much meaning in the fact that there is light in the church entrance. The church functions as a symbol and not something literal in the lyrics. But honestly, I would be more interested in knowing what you thought about it. And what other people think it means. To me, that is the exciting part.”

What did you wrote in the back of the booklet: "The meek shall inherit the earth?"

"Yeah, but look carefully and there is more text. It’s not just “The meek shall inherit the earth.” It also says that “The strong will destroy it first.”

Are you conctact with others christian bands? I know that you worked also for others bands...

"I am in contact with a few. Things have changed in the last five years though. There used to be a lot of online contact between the bands in the extreme metal scene. There isn’t so much of that now. Part of it is that people start to grow up and move on with their lives, and part of it is that it is very difficult to sell albums these days. And if you can’t sell an album to music listeners, what is the point of spending all the money to do it? You have to be motivated by a desire to make art."

When you will play in Europe, or better again in Italy?

"I would love to. If we could organize a small tour through Europe, we would really appreciate the chance to be able to come and see Italy. I am a big fan of classical civilization, so I would probably get lost in looking at the ancient ruins. But it would be a lot of fun.”
