DEUTERONOMIUM 
"From The Midst Of The Battle"

Ritorno tanto atteso per i finnici Deuteronomium, che si ripresentano sulla scena metallica con un full-lenght dopo sette anni dal precedente lavoro studio, “Here To Stay” datato 1999.
“From The Midst Of The Battle” che è distribuito dalla ormai nota Bullroser Records anche in edizione limitata digipack, si presenta come un puro concentrato di death metal melodico con venature thrasheggianti e con parti acustiche molto atmosferiche. Il disco si lascia ascoltare benissimo senza particolari cali di tensione o stanchezza e la produzione risulta la vera carta vincente, sempre azzeccata al punto giusto, a conferma del grande stato di forma della band di Jyväskylä.
Le influenze musicali che si possono riscontrare nell’ascolto sono parecchie, dai Children Of Bodom, In Flames e Dark Tranquillity fino ad arrivare a Testament e Metallica.
Si parte a razzo con l’opener killer, ‘Fields Of War’, manifesto del death metal melodico di chiara scuola nordica. Dopo una breve introduzione con spari e bombardamenti in sottofondo decolla la canzone, molto ben costruita e articolata nel corso della sua durata. Ottimi i riff taglienti che compongono la canzone e parecchio interessante la parte strumentale solistica a metà del brano, che evidenzia la bravura del giovane chitarrista Kalle Paju.
Sugli stessi registri ruota attorno la seconda traccia, ‘3:16’, tipica speed/death song, con richiami di matrice americana anni ’90. Semplice ma incisiva al contempo.
La successiva ‘Defending The Faith’ mostra invece l’aspetto più marcatamente thrash attraverso l’influsso di band come Metallica e Megadeth, risaltando soprattutto l’aspetto puramente cristiano ormai intrinseco nel DNA dei Deuteronomium. I nostri si fanno perciò portavoce della difesa della fede cristiana in tutto il mondo.
Altro brano totalmente thrash metal è il seguente, ‘Song Of The Saved’, i cui riff di chitarra sembrano essere usciti direttamente dai dischi di Metallica, Testament e Slayer (ovviamente musicalmente parlando). Nonostante la sua breve durata (siamo sui due minuti), la canzone risulta uno dei momenti più alti del disco, capace di far scuotere più volte la testa all’ascoltatore, mediante ritmiche incessanti in up-tempo tipiche del thrash.
Altro episodio degno di nota è ‘Hail To The King’, capace di far rimembrare nell’intro principale persino gli Iron Maiden di “Powerslave”, anche se in tutta la sua durata le influenze thrash emergono e prendono subito il comando della situazione. Ottima la sezione ritmica, in modo particolare il variegato batterista J-J Kontoniemi e i funambolici assoli del solito Kalle.
Si ritorna su territori decisamente death con la devastante song ‘Holy War, Holy Violenze’, canzone violenta che testimonia la crudezza del tema affrontato dalla band: la guerra e il suo essere devastante per l’umanità intera. Il brano pieno di cambi continui di tempo e riff potentissimi, è arricchito maggiormente dalla voce clean del buon bassista Manu Lehtinen che accompagna nel chorus il growl rabbioso del chitarrista/cantante Miika Partala.
L’album si conclude egregiamente con una suite di diciassette minuti, ‘Tales From The Midst Of The Battle’, che racchiude a 360° tutta la musica dei Deuteronomium e dove a parer mio si tocca l’apice del disco. La song che comincia con un introduzione sinfonica strumentale dal sapore divino e paradisiaco, accompagnata da voci angeliche e da arpeggi di chitarra classica, esplode in un brano stupendo pieno di tante variazioni tecniche minuziosamente curate dal combo finlandese.
I Deuteronomium sono più in forma che mai e finalmente sfornano un album all’altezza della loro bravura che tanto mancava alla personale discografia.
Il panorama cristiano da ora ha un’altra band valida che potrà rappresentare il metallo Santo per tanto tanto tempo.
I quattro finlandesi si confermano una realtà solida del christian metal europeo.
Il disco è vivamente consigliato a tutti gli amanti del death melodico e del thrash americano. Non vi deluderà!

Return so much waited for the Finnish Deuteronomium, comes to the scene with a full-length album after seven years since the previous studio album, “Here To Stay” made in 1999.
“From The Midst Of The Battle” distributed by the famous Bullroser Records, also in limited digipack edition, and it is a pure concentration of melodic death metal with some thrash parts and atmospheric acoustic parts. In the disc there aren’t particular drops of tension or tiredness and the production results to be the real winning card, always guessed at the right point, confirming the great status of the band of Jyväskylä.
The music influences that we can notice during the listening are enough, from Children Of Bodom, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity till to arrive to Testament and Metallica.
The opening song ‘Fields Of War’ is very fast, manifest of melodic death metal of clear Nordic School. After a short introduction with shots and bombing in the background, the song takes off, well built and articulated during the course of its duration Excellent the riffs that compound the song and enough interesting the instrumental solo side at the middle of the song that underlines the cleverness of the young guitar player Kalle Paju.
On the same registers there is the second track, ‘3:16’, typical speed/death song, with recallings of American matrix of 90’s. Simple but incisive in the same time.
The following ‘Defending The Faith’ shows instead the thrash aspect through the influence of bands like Metallica and Megadeth, standing out above all for the Christian aspect just inside the DNA of the band Deuteronomium. They become the mouthpiece of the defence of the Christian faith in all the world.
Another song totally thrash is the following, ‘Song Of The Saved’, about which it seems that the riffs came out directly from the Metallica, Testament and Slayer’s albums (obviously musically talking about) . Despite its short length (it is long about two minutes), the song results to be one of the best moments of the disc , able to make shaking the head of the listener, through never stopping rhythmics in up-time typical of the thrash.
Another episode right to cite is ‘Hail To The King’, able to make remember during the main intro also Iron Maiden with the album “Powerslave”, even if all its lenght the thrash influences grow up and they suddenly take the charge of the situation. Exellent the rhythmical section, in particular way the variegated J-J Kontoniemi and the acrobatic solos of the usual Kalle.
Then we return on death lands with the devastating song ‘Holy War, Holy Violence’, violent song that testimonies the rawness of the theme faced by the band: the war and its being devastating for the whole mankind. The song full of continuous changes of time and powerful riffs, is enriched mostly by the clean voice of the great bass guitar player Manu Lehtinen that accompanies with the chorus the rabid growl of the guitar player/singer Miika Partala.
The album ends eminently with a suite of seventeen minutes, ‘Tales From The Midst Of The Battle’, that contains at 360 degrees all the music of Deuteronomium and where according to me the top of the disc was touched. The song that starts with a symphonic instrumental introduction by divine and paradisiacal taste , accompanied by angelical voices and by arpeggios of classic guitars, it explodes in a wonderful song full of many technical variations minutely taken care by the Finnish band.
Deuteronomium are in an excellent form and finally they release an album great like their cleverness that missed so much to their personal discography.
The Christian panorama has another valid band by now, that will able to represent the Saint Metal for a lot , a lot of time.
After watching them on-stage at the last Elements Of Rock, I can confirm they are a solid reality of the European Christian Metal.
The disc is deeply recommended to all the death melodic and American thrash lovers. It will not disappoint you !
