Con grande piacere ci accingiamo a proporvi la recensione del lavoro dei Discern, promettente quanto longeva one man band proveniente dalle deserte lande del Texas, ed attiva ben dal 1999. Il progetto ruota attorno alla figura di Billy Fraser, vero e proprio genio umano, compositore ed arrangiatore di tutte le tracce presenti sul disco, nonché autore di tutte le parti di batteria, basso, chitarra ritmica e voce, e che viene supportato unicamente dallo “shredder” Rick “Hunter” Martinez per gli assoli di chitarra, assoli di una tecnica e mostruosità inaudita, e che potrebbero competere tranquillamente con il lavoro di un James Murphy o di un Andy Laroque, giusto per citare alcune cime del technical death metal anni ’90 (l’unica pecca è quella dell’originalità, che stenta un po’ a farsi sentire in questi solos…).
E’ impressionate, d’altra parte, constatare come Fraser riesca a padroneggiare in maniera così perfetta e professionale tutti gli altri strumenti, dai blastbeat di batteria alle parti di basso e ai riff “macina-sedicesime” della chitarra, oltre a possedere uno tra i più gutturali e cavernosi growling mai sentiti ultimamente, degno della scuola di un Chris Barnes dei bei tempi che furono (“Eaten Back To Life” e “Tomb Of The Mutilated” su tutti). Oddio, in certi momenti la sensazione che si sia avvalso dell’Octaver è parecchio forte, come anche si può certamente affermare che il cantato sia abbastanza monocorde e raramente lanciato verso scream e tonalità più alte, ma nel complesso (e per questo genere), certamente la formula adottata da Fraser si rivela vincente ed efficace.
Da elogiare al massimo anche la registrazione e mixing/produzione, finalmente degne di un vero e proprio CD autoprodotto e pronto per il commercio, e non del solito demo registrato con programmini casalinghi e spacciato come release professionale. Il nostro Fraser si è avvalso di vari studi, confermando la teoria secondo la quale soprattutto per un genere come questo è indispensabile ottenere una registrazione e produzione di alta qualità, onde evitare di creare il classico “pastone zanzaroso” tipico delle mille e mille produzioni underground di metal estremo che si possono trovare in giro… e come prova inconfutabile di ciò basterebbe citare l’apporto, in fase di mixaggio e masterizzazione, di Sterling Winfield, già al lavoro con nomi del calibro di Pantera e Damageplan! Professionale e curato, infine, anche il lay-out grafico, che reca in copertina un’incisione dello storico artista Gustave Dore, e che è stato creato in parte anche dalla moglie di Fraser.
Un altro aspetto assolutamente unico e peculiare di quest’opera è la sua militanza. Da questo punto di vista, “To Praise With Persecution” è IL disco di christian death metal per antonomasia. Quasi tutte le parti vocali sono infatti contraddistinte dalla citazione letterale di molti passi della Sacra Bibbia o del Vangelo (ovviamente secondo una vulgata protestante, data la confessione religiosa del nostro amico), eliminando ogni ombra di dubbio sul chiaro orientamento di questo lavoro, e confermando ancora una volta che per suonare brutal death metal non è necessario, né obbligatorio, tirar fuori testi satanisti, negativi, o che sembrano sian stati estratti dal manuale di anatomia patologica che si usa al terzo anno di medicina!
I Death del compianto Schuldiner sono certamente una tra le fonti d’ispirazione basilari per il nostro Fraser, il quale dedica un’ “ode death metal” per l’anima di Chuck come intro del suo lavoro. Il resto del disco, dalla massacrante ‘I Sacrifice’ fino all’ultima ‘Behold The Eretic’, è un lancinante e mostruoso connubio dei già citati Death (con piacevoli echi del loro “Individual Thought Patterns”, ma anche di vecchi lavori come “Spiritual Healing”) assieme a Cannibal Corpse, i Morbid Angel di “Covenant” e “Blessed Are The Sick” e compagnia estrema, un assalto sonoro mai confuso, ma compatto e massacrante come il passaggio di un Tank da battaglia fino all’outro finale, per la verità unica nota stonata del disco data la sua struttura un po’ “buttata a caso” e non pienamente sviluppata come si sarebbe potuto fare...degno di nota, comunque, il flavour vagamente “sludge core” alla “Down/Crowbar” di ‘Second Death Honesty’ e le rimembranze squisitamente “thrash bay area” di ‘Change For The Worse’ e ‘Grace’.
Si dovrebbero citare davvero tutti i testi di questo lavoro, cosa ovviamente impossibile in questa sede, ma certamente si può segnalare l’intelligenza di un testo come quello della già menzionata ‘Second Death Honesty’, in cui il demonio tenta l’essere umano con le sue menzogne e cerca di seminare il caos e il peccato, oppure l’estrema militanza di ‘Your Choice’, anti-abortista in maniera seminale e decisiva nel suo denunciare, descrivendolo in maniera esasperatamente particolareggiata, il mostruoso atto chirurgico dell’interruzione di gravidanza. Da segnalare anche le parole di ‘One Flesh’, dedicata al matrimonio in Cristo, con tanto di citazione del celebre passo della Lettera Agli Efesini in cui Paolo definisce chiaramente come debba essere il rapporto moglie-marito in seno alla Chiesa (ma si potrebbe anche menzionare il famoso versetto del Salmo 50: “Uno spirito contrito è sacrificio a Dio, un cuore affranto e umiliato, Dio tu non disprezzi”, presente in maniera quasi integrale nella prima ‘I Sacrifice’…). Fraser ha voluto persino recare nel booklet i riferimenti biblici per ogni versetto che ha deciso di utilizzare…
Ci sarebbero ancora molti spunti su cui divagare, ma preferiamo tenerli da parte per l’intervista già in cantiere che sarà dedicata al mastermind di questo progetto. Si può comunque affermare in maniera inequivocabile che Fraser, assieme a Steve Rowe dei Mortification e a pochi altri, può essere identificato come uno dei solitari e indispensabili veri araldi di Dio nel panorama del metal estremo.

With great pleasure I show you the recension of the Discern production, a band coming from the desert lands of Texas and active since 1999. The project is focused around the figure of Billy Fraser, real and unic human genius, composer and arranger of all the tracks on the album, and author of all the drum parts, bass guitar, rhtymic guitar and voice, and it is supported by "shredder" Rick "Hunter" Martines for the guitar assolo, assolo of a unic technician; they could compete without problems with the James Murphy or Andy Laroque work, just for citing some famouse artists of the technical death metal of 90's (the only pity is the originality that isn't so original in this solos...).
It's impressive, by the other way, to constate that Fraser is able to dominate in a perfect and professional way all the other instruments, from the blastbeats of drums to the bass guitar parts and to the riffs of the guitar, other than having one the most gutturals growlings never heard lately,worthy of the school of Chris Barnes of the good times of the past (above all “Eaten Back To Life” and “Tomb Of The Mutilated”). Well, in some moments the sensation that made it with Octaver is enough strong, as we can certainly adfirm that the sung pieces is enough onestrings and rarely thrown toward screams and higher tonalities, but in the complex (and for this genre), certainly the formula used by Fraser is winner and efficacious.
We must eulogize at maximum also the recording and mixing/production, finally worthy of a real CD selfproduced and ready for trading, and it's not the usual demo recorded with little household programs and showed like professional releases.
Our Fraser used various studies of recording, and confirming the theory according to which above all for a genre like this one, it's important obtaining a recording and production of high quality, to avoid to create a production like the other underground productions of extreme metal that we can find around... and like evidence of this there is the help during the mix and recording of Sterling Winfield, just at work with important names like Pantera and Damageplan! Professional and take caring, at the end, also the graphic layout, showing on the cover the sign of the historical artist Gustave Dore, and that it was created also by the Fraser's wife.
Another unic and important aspect of this album is its support to Holy Bible. From this point of view, “To Praise With Persecution” it's the disc of christian death metal for antonomasia. Almost all the vowel parts are infact denoted by the literal citation of a lot of words by Holy Bible or Gospel passages (obviously according to a protestant connotation, considering the religious confession of our friend), eliminating every doubt about the clear target of this work, and confirming yet a time that to play brutal death metal isn't necessary, and it isn't obligatory, take out satanist lyrics, negative, or that it seems they come out from the manual of patologic anathomy that the people uses at the third year of medicine!
Death band by Schuldiner is certainly one the most important inspiration of our Fraser, who dedicates an “ode death metal” to the soul of Chuck as intro of his work. The remaining of the disc, from the back-breaking ‘I Sacrifice’ until to the last ‘Behold The Eretic’, is a stabbing and monstrous marrying of the just cited Death (with nice echoes of their “Individual Thought Patterns”, but also about old works like “Spiritual Healing”) together to Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel with "Covenant" and “Blessed Are The Sick” and extreme company, a sonorous assault never confused, but compact and back-breaking like the passage of a battle tank to the final outro, for the truth unic note out of tuned of the disc considering its structure for a little "at random" and not fully enveloped like they could do... worthy of citation, however, the flavour simlar to “sludge core” like “Down/Crowbar” of ‘Second Death Honesty’ and the remembers tastely “thrash bay area” of ‘Change For The Worse’ and 'Grace'. I should really quote all the lyrics of this work, thing obviously impossible in this side, but certainly we can not the intelligence of a lyric like the one just mentioned ‘Second Death Honesty’ in which the demon tempts the human being with his lies and searches to seminate the chaos and the pity, or the extreme militancy of ‘Your Choice’, against the abort and in a decisive manner in its denounce, describing it in a particular manner, the monster chirurgic act of the interruption of the pregnancy.
I must report also the words of ‘One Flesh’, dedicated to the marriage in Christ, with the citation of the famouse passage of the letter to the Ephesines in which Paul defines clearly how it must be the relationship wife-husband (but we could also mention the famouse verse from the salm 50: “Uno spirito contrito è sacrificio a Dio, un cuore affranto e umiliato, Dio tu non disprezzi” present in a manner almost integral in the first 'I Sacrifice'...) . Fraser wanter also write in the booklet the holy bible's references for every verses that he decided to use... There should be yet a lot of themes on which talking about getting longer the discourse, but I prefer to take them apart for the interview just ready that will be dedicated to the mastermind of this project. I could despite adfirm that Frase, together to Steve Rowe by Mortification and together to other few people, he can be indentified like one of the most lonely and important heralds of God in the extreme metal scene.
