L'inizio di ogni nuovo anno porta sempre qualche sorpresa, qualcosa di inaspettato. Non possiamo fare a meno ogni volta di aspettarlo con un pò di ansia. E così ecco che nel Febbraio 2009 ci siamo trovati davanti l'eccezionale ritorno dei Doomenicus. Sette anni sono passati dopo un vuoto e muto silenzio; questo silenzio è eccezionalmente rotto da un respiro di aria fresca di puro doom metal direttamente dalle terre italiche. Il nuovo album intitolato “Sacred” è un full-length album, che include sei canzoni, scrupolosamente elaborate.
Il primo pezzo, 'Cold Embrace', si apre con dei ritmi marziali mentre in sottofondo si ascolta chiaramente un sottile sussurro. Poi si inseriscono lente ritmiche di chitarra, che sembrano creare una sorta di ritmica "a passo d'uomo" con i loro toni bassi. In seguito si inserisce la voce di Domenico Caruso. La sua linea vocale è piena di dolore, molto diversa da quella che possiamo ricordare nell'EP “Suffering Of Souls”.
Dei piccoli cambiamenti li possiamo trovare anche nella canzone melodica 'You Are Nothing' , dove la voce è più intensa , come se volesse scuotere l'anima dell'uomo da un cuore freddo e insensibile. In alcuni momenti la canzone rallenta e si forma come un eco. Di sfondo alla voce si susseguono basse tonalità create egregiamente dal basso e dalla chitarra. Ad ogni modo la canzone non fa parte delle canzoni sentimentalmente piu' tristi.
Nel brano successivo, 'Remember November', scopriamo una sorprendente evoluzione. La linea vocale si bilancia qui tra il growl e lo scream e suona in una maniera incredibile. La canzone presenta i tipici elementi del funeral doom; possiamo anche ascoltare il sound delle campane di una chiesa. Alla fine è di particolare interesse il cambio di tempo con veloci percussioni e bei riff.
Invece nella canzone 'Sacred' si puo' ascoltare chiaramente il basso che accompagna la dolce e tranquilla voce di Domenico. Nel prosequio del brano incontriamo alte melodie di chitarra influenzate da connotazioni stilistiche thrash metal. Possiamo ascoltare poi ottimi riff di doom metal in 'She haunts You', grazie a bei riff di chitarra e batteria. Di certo si presentano bene anche il basso e le parti vocali. In conclusione i Doomenicus ci offrono 'Mercy And Forgiveness', che si presenta come un poetico e mistico sfondo che chiude l'album.
Nel momento in cui prendiamo in considerazione i testi dell'album possiamo notare che le tematiche appartengono al genere funeral doom di tipo tradizionale. Per esempio 'Remember November' parla dei giorni di tutti i santi che celebriamo in autunno: “(…) Dance souls on the graves / Bring the candles in this days (…) / The smell of rain(…) / The smell of flowers(…) / The smell of incense(…) / The stink of death Remember…”
Nella canzone ' Mercy and forgiveness' si nota il testo della preghiera per il riposo eterno dei morti: ”(…) if you, kindly turn your face / To the cross, every voice says / Oh Christ, give our brothers / They deserved rest / Till they rise from fire / Lord of the dying, Mercy and Forgiveness.”
Un altro testo in cui prestare attenzione è 'You Are Nothing', che parla della vita, di come nelle posizioni elevate della società non ci sia spesso rispetto per i dipendenti e tratta quindi anche di edonismo. Le parole che possiamo trovare nel testo sono una chiara condanna a questo tipo di esistenza e ci ricordano che è un pericolo in quanto il suddetto comportamento non conta dopo la morte e porterà ogni uomo a un vuoto orribile: ”Here are a powerful person / Controls everything / Every respect you / But all you hate and would like your end / You don’t know hunger / You don’t know suffering / Always well dressed/With his face and hands clean / But the stink and filth are / Inside you (…) You are nothing / Too eternal poor.”
Dopo aver commentato brevemente il lavoro dei Doomenicus, possiamo affermare che questo nuovo lavoro è davvero ben realizzato. La musica non è solo legata strettamente allo stile funeral doom metal ma presenta anche altri elementi che arricchiscono il CD. Anche le linee vocali sono decisamente chiare e limpide; infine va detto che la qualità della registrazione è migliorata decisamente rispetto alla precedente release.
I fan di My Silent Wake, Candlemass e Black Sabbath dovrebbero senz'altro recuperare "Sacred" per la loro collezione.

ENGLISH VERSION

The beginning of every New Year, always brings some surprises, unexpected things. We can’t guess what properly it will happen but we’re waiting in quiet tension. And exactly as for the calling of this eternal rule, the February of 2009 brings to us the great, exceptional return of Doomenicus. Seven years of the mute, empty silence, finally is broken and we can enjoy the “fresh breath” of the pure doom straightly from the Italian lands. The new record under the title “Sacred” is properly a full-length album, which includes six tracks, scrupulously elaborated.
First piece ‘Cold Embrace’ opens marching drums and in the background it hears cool, subtle whisper. Then enter the slow guitars, which seems to crawling in their low tunes. As the next appears the trembling vocal of Domenico Caruso. The voice is full of pain, whining, very different as we remember from the “Suffering Of Souls”. A little changes we’ll feel in melodic ‘You Are Nothing’, where this vocal is more intense, as it would to accuse somebody of something; as it wanted to shake obdurate, hard-hearted soul of man. In some moment it goes down and takes a form of echo. Behind the voice follow low tones of bass and sullen guitars. By the way this song doesn’t belong to the gloomiest.
In the next title ‘Remember November’ we discover surprising evolution. Vocal line balances here between growl and scream, which sounds incredibly. Just tears apart the heart. During the track, are typical funeral doom elements, where don’t lack also effects of church’s bells. On the end is interesting change of tempo with quick percussion and nice riffs. Instead in ‘Sacred’ in the front it hears clear bass, which accompanies the sweet vocal’s combination with low, calm voice of Domenico. Then we meet high melodies of guitars influenced in thrash. Strong doom accords we’ll listen in ‘She haunts You’, thanks to good, guitars riffs and the drums. Of course well present bass and vocal parts as well. As the end Doomenicus serves ‘Mercy And Forgiveness’ with poetic, mystic background, which capitally closes all full-length.
When we consider the lyrics of this album, first of all it sees traditional funeral doom themes. For example ‘Remember November’ talks about the days of all saints we celebrate in autumn: “(…) Dance souls on the graves / Bring the candles in this days (…) / The smell of rain (…) / The smell of flowers (…) / The smell of incense (…) / The stink of death Remember…”
In the track ‘Mercy And Forgiveness’ we have some prayer for the eternal peace for dead people: “(…) if you, kindly turn your face / To the cross, every voice says / Oh Christ, give our brothers / They deserved rest / Till they rise from fire / Lord of the dying, Mercy and Forgiveness.”
Another one lyric worth to pay attention is ‘You Are Nothing’, which treats about life in unlimited wealth, about care of the high position in society without respect the dependents, about hedonism. The words which are written, condemn clearly these style of existence and remember that it’s danger, won’t count itself after death and will bring every man to horrible emptiness: ”Here are a powerful person / Controls everything / Every respect you / But all you hate and would like your end / You don’t know hunger / You don’t know suffering / Always well dressed/With his face and hands clean / But the stink and filth are / Inside you (…) You are nothing / Too eternal poor.”
Assumed shortly the work of Doomenicus here on this record we must tell sincere: ”Well done!” The music isn’t only a great piece of boring, “swarming” funeral doom but has some richer elements. Also the vocal line has unfolded and the quality of registration is better. The fans of these climates as My Silent Wake, Candlemass and Black Sabbath should no wait too much to make a place for “Sacred” in their collection.
