L’etichetta discografica Momentum Scandinavia ha rilasciato una vera “perla” nel mercato del metal cristiano. Questa perla è intitolata “The Nightshift Worshiper” ed è stata creata dai norvegesi Grave Declaration. Dietro questa band ci sta una persona carismatica come Thor Georg Buer, che forse qualcuno ricorda dalla band thrash metal Soniferous. Questa volta gli ascoltatori potranno incontrarlo in un progetto di black metal sinfonico dove è anche possibile sentire alcuni pezzi di genere death e gothic.
Il musicista suona qui la chitarra, il basso e canta. Lui è anche l’autore di tutti i testi. Rilevante, da considerare, è che lui è il responsabile delle parti in programming; questo significa che molte parti sono state realizzate in formato elettronico, senza usare strumenti naturali, ma su questo MCD questo fatto è presentato in maniera perfetta. All’interno della registrazione appaiono come ospiti due voci pulite, appartenenti a Eivind Haugstad e Byron Eggehorn.
In tutte le canzoni possiamo riconoscere senza problemi i suoni scandinavi, meravigliosi e caratteristici.
L’album inizia con la canzone ‘Your Beauty Embraced’, con una parte drammatica e sinfonica che accompagna in modo superbo la chitarra. Poi viene lo scream tenebroso del cantante e in sottofondo possiamo sentire le tastiere, che disegnano un paesaggio molto colorito simile al paesaggio di qualche fiaba.
La chitarra e i violini sembrano essere delle guide in questo percorso e ci conducono attraverso il mondo della fantasia. Poi per un po’ ci fermiamo durante questa meraviglia e ascoltiamo i calorosi riff di chitarra e tastiere ma subito dopo questa pausa arriva la vera tempesta di suoni. Nel profondo di questa tempesta ci sono anche delicate, romantiche corde che ricordano il superbo piano. La voce si bilancia tra lo scream e il growl. Poi la tastiera acquista energia e pure la voce.
Sembra che Thor strazi la sua gola fino al limite delle possibilità. E’ solo uno squisito “dolciume nero”.
In seguito tardi possiamo ascoltare ancora, una parte classica dove la musica suona molto grottesca e trasmette alla canzone una sorta di ansia. In seguito la chitarra si fa più dura e in sottofondo solo un attento ascoltatore può sentire un coro nascosto.
Con il secondo titolo, ‘To My Redeemer’, alle nostre orecchie arriva il suono di una batteria molto pesante e forte, che sta marciando lentamente e non senza maestosità.
Sembra che la terra stia tremando sotto di essa. Direttamente dietro alla batteria la seguono come dei fantasmi quasi invisibili le tastiere e pezzi classici di violini.
Poi si unisce la chitarra che improvvisamente fa cambiare tempo e ritmo al brano. L’effetto di questo è che l’ascoltatore riceve solide cascate di brutale e cruda melodia ma non private della grazia di sapori sinfonici.
Le corde dei violini chiaramente soccombono all’allungamento. Le percussioni sono più aggressive come nel tipico stile black metal. Poi si inserisce la voce con energico scream. Suoni selvaggi ci portano in maniera più profonda alla vera bellezza di questa struttura. Il momento più bello è quando la musica si calma per un pò e acquista una forma più sublime. La chitarra cade in più bassi e pesanti toni di distruzione. La parte classica è anche più lenta e trasmette misticismo al pezzo.
Poi possiamo sentire un'inaspettata e meravigliosa voce pulita. Questa linea vocale ha un volume alto ma c’è anche una minuscola dose di melanconia. Dopodiché segue ancora una voce tenebrosa ma sembra più energica rispetto a quella precedente. Ed essa si intensifica incredibilmente creando una commovente atmosfera.
La canzone successiva inizia con suoni oscuri di violoncelli e violini. Poi vi è l’ingresso del ritmo pulsante delle chitarre, che variano il mood della canzone per alcuni secondi in modo più tagliente. Nel prosequio del brano possiamo trovare parti più pesanti di chitarra.
Anche la voce si armonizza con la sezione di chitarra in modo sublime. Dietro il muro delle chitarre ci sono percussioni veloci della batteria, in stile tradizionale per il genere black. Anche qui appare la voce pulita, che è davvero fantastica in questa parte. Veramente elevata e bella. Qui la linea vocale sprigiona una forza incredibile; sembra che un angelo sia caduto nell’inferno più tenebroso e abbia illuminato tutto, rivelando tutta la gloria del Dio onnipresente. Poi ancora si inserisce un oscuro screaming vocal ma incontra una patetica melodia, perché qui le tastiere si legano con suoni delicati alla voce.
Più tardi la musica cala con un soffice silenzio e possiamo sentire solo la parte delle tastiere con suoni morenti di chitarre e i riff tendono a diventare dei mormorii. Infine il suono ritorna a essere tumultuoso e la musica si spinge come un potente e pericoloso fiume.
La canzone che chiude il MCD è più lunga rispetto alle altre (‘The Great Exaltation Of The Most Sovereign God’ ) ed è anche eccezionale. Qui possiamo trovare molte interessanti costruzioni melodiche. All’inizio vi è una impostazione di tipo classico. Ascoltiamo per prima solo un delicato e triste piano, e dopo si riuniscono i violini; poi improvvisamente la melodia si fa sentire in modo molto aggressivo creando una vera valanga di suoni. La chitarra e la batteria attaccano l’ascoltatore con una forza incredibile. Sembra che ci si trovi nel mezzo di una grande guerra tra il bene e il male e che l'ignaro ascoltatore diventi un osservatore della battaglia. Possiamo immaginare tutti gli eserciti, ispirati direttamente dai racconti fantasy.
La musica è piena di orgoglio, parti mistiche, fantastici cambi di tempo di tutti gli strumenti.
Specialmente colpiscono le chitarre con meravigliosi riff e le tastiere (è difficile credere che la percussione è solo fatta col computer! Ad ogni modo, bel lavoro). Vale la pena prestare attenzione ai suoni delle campane che appaiono solo in questa canzone. La track si conlcude con una sezione classica simile a quella che abbiamo trovato all’inizio.
Dovremmo dare molta importanza ai testi che sono assolutamente profondi e toccano direttamente i temi della cristianità. In qualunque canzone possiamo trovare parole nelle quali lo scrittore vuole pregare il potere della gloria e della misericordia di Dio: “(...) I see your throne, encircled by thrones / Bringing the lightening out, and the thunder behind / Speak of how you are worthy of this seat”.
Then is underlined that only God can give to human pure silence and peace and heal soul from the spiritual chaos: “I can here Him whisper to me / His voice is soft like the seas and He brings me peace and rest".
In the other place we can read: "Worthy are you who was nailed to a tree / With the understanding of who owns revenge / As you left behind all fury and hate / To become the atonement for all of our sins”.
It feels here deep appreciation and thankfulness for the victim of Jesus Christ on the cross. Again we can find also very worship verses: “Oh Savior of mine (…) / My God, my God, in fear I will bow / At your throne where I know there’s mercy to be found / (…) I am yours, even in days of sorrow”.
Questo MCD è davvero riuscito nel migliore dei mod, arricchito da grandiosi testi cristiani; inoltre la musica emana un vero misticismo e attraverso essa fluisce un chiaro e deciso sound scandinavo. Ogni dettaglio è stato curato scrupolosamente. I fan del black metal dovrebbero procurarsi questo debuto dei Grave Declaration. Sembra proprio, quindi, che una nuova, fantastica formazione sia nata sulla scena metal.
Questo MCD è per tutti coloro cui piacciono i gruppi quali Vaakevandring, Antestor o i Crimson Moonlight e per quanto riguarda la parte secolare, band come Dimmu Borgir o Children Of Bodom.

The label Momentum Scandinavia released true “black pearl” on the christian metal’s market. This pearl called “The Nightshift Worshiper” created by Grave Declaration from Norway. Behind it stands one charismatic person of Thor Georg Buer who perhaps someone remember from the thrash band Soniferous.
This time listeners can meet him in straight symphonic black metal project where is also possible to hear some kind of death and gothic pieces. Musician plays here guitar, bass and sings. He is the author of the lyrics too. Important to tell that he is responsible for programming so it means that many parts were made by electronic way, without using natural instruments, but on this MCD it’s hided perfectly. Inside of the record appears as guests two clean vocal, sang by Eivind Haugstad and Byron Eggehorn.
In all songs we recognize without problems wonderful, characteristic only to Scandinavia sounds.
The record starts by the song ‘Your Beauty Embraced’ with dramatic, symphonic part, which accompanies proudly guitar. Next comes the dark scream of vocalist and in the background we can hear keyboards, which paints a very colorful landscape similar to the landscape from any fairy tale. The guitar and violins seem to be as guides on this path and lead us through the world of fantasy.
Then for a while we stop during this wandering and listen the warm riffs of guitar and keyboards but right now after this break comes the true storm of sounds. Deep in this storm there are also delicate, romantic chords which remember grand piano. Vocal balances between scream and growl. Then keyboards takes the power and vocalist too. It seems to that he tears his throat to last limit of possibility. It is just exquisite “black candy”. Afterwards we can listen again interesting classic part, where the music sounds very grotesquely and put to the song some kind of anxiety. Later guitar beats more stronger and behind it attentive listener can hear the hided choir.
In the second title ‘To My Redeemer’ close to our ears comes the sound of very heavy and strong drum, which is marching slowly and not without majesty. It seems that the earth is trembling upon it. Directly behind the drum follow as a ghost almost invisible keyboards with classic part of violins. Next join the guitar which suddenly give order to change tempo of the music. Effect of it is that listener receives solid cascades of the brutal melody mixed with crude but also not deprived of the grace, symphonic tastes.
The chords of the violins clearly succumbs to the elongation. The drums are more aggressive in typical black metal manner. Then enters the voice with energetic scream. Wild sounds bring us deeper to the true beauty of this structure. Most beautiful moment is when the music calms itself for a little and take more sublime form. Guitar falls in lower and heavier tones of doom. Classic part is also more slow and put to the song mysticism. Then we can hear within unexpected wonderful clean vocal. Strong but from other side there is the microscopic piece of sorrow and melancholy. After it ensues again dark vocal but it seems to that increased with power. And it just intensifies incredible, pathetic atmosphere.
Next song begins with dark sounds of cellos and violins. Then is the entry of pulsate rhythm of the low guitar, which goes to change for some seconds into more harsh and sharp. Deeper within the track we can find more heavy tones of the guitars and it climb to very high levels. The vocal matches oneself to guitar’s section in good way too. Together with it goes to lower or higher chords. Behind the wall of the guitar are fast beats of the bass drum, traditional to black genre. Also here appears clean vocal, which is properly fantastic in this part. Truly high and beautiful. Just inside it feels incredible force. It seems that an angel fell to the darkest hell and enlightened everything there and reveal all glory of omnipresent God. The symphony which accompanies his power. Then again enters black scream but in front of more pathetic melody, because here join the keyboards as well, which is very delicate. Later the music goes down to soft silence and we can hear only symphony with dying sound of guitar and on the first plan moves forward tender whisper. After sound returns to wild waves and music drifts as pure but danger river.
Title which closes the MCD is longer than the others (‘The Great Exaltation Of The Most Sovereign God’ ) but is also very exceptional. Here are many interesting constructions. Beginning of this position is very classic. We listen here first only delicate, sad grand piano and after join violins. Then suddenly melody bites us very aggressive. It’s true avalanche of sounds. Guitar and drums just attacks the listener with impossible strength. It seems that we are in the middle of big war between good and evil and we observe the battle. We can imagine all armies, taken straight from fantasy stories. Music is full of pride, mystic parts, fantastic changes the tempos of all instruments. Especially the guitar with wonderful riffs and the drums (Just is difficult to believe that percussion is only programmed! Nice job anyway). Worth to pay attention are also sounds of biting bells which appears only in this track. The song finishes with classic section too, similar to this as was on beginning.
Many importance we should give also for the lyrics, which are absolutely profound and touch themes directly from Christianity. This is really “mine” of the faith and trust. Whatever fragment, whatever verse we will take, everywhere we can find words in which writer just wants to praise the power of glory and mercy of God: “(...) I see your throne, encircled by thrones / Bringing the lightening out, and the thunder behind / Speak of how you are worthy of this seat”.

The project is properly fantastic. Great christian lyrics and music which just emanates by true mysticism and through it flows unique Scandinavian atmosphere. Everything is closed here to the last button. Every detail seems to be made very scrupulously. Fans of black metal should keep the eyes on Grave Declaration. It seems that the new, great formation has arisen on the metal scene.
Every who likes groups as Vaakevandring, Antestor or Crimson Moonlight and from secular side appreciates the style created by bands as for example Dimmu Borgir or Children Of Bodom should necessarily have this position in own collection.
