Super debutto per i finlandesi HB, arrivati a questo splendido album dal titolo “Frozen Inside” e quindi alla loro definitiva consacrazione al panorama christian metal europeo, dopo due dischi ed un MCD di qualche anno fa e realizzati interamente in lingua madre.
Il loro symphonic metal è di chiara ispirazione nightwishiana e i riferimenti con la band di Tuomas Holopainen sono davvero palesi, anche se in molti frangenti la band dimostra di avere una propria identità e un proprio marchio.
In tutto questo, gioca un ruolo di prim’ordine l’angelica voce della bellissima Johanna Aaltonen (quando si troverà una cantante gothic non bella? penso mai), che delizia le orecchie dell’ascoltatore con una voce semplice, concisa e di una dolcezza sublime.
Davvero ottimi tutti gli altri componenti della band, a partire dal tastierista Antti Niskala che tesse melodie e intrecci tipicamente gothic, fino ad arrivare al preciso e tecnico, al punto giusto, batterista Markus Malin. Inoltre, da segnalare, la perfetta produzione del disco, che suona veramente potente e melodico come da classica tradizione sinfonica e il buon fiuto della finnica label Bullroser Records che si è aggiudicata senza dubbio un pezzo da novanta del metallo cristiano di un prossimo futuro. Ma passiamo adesso alla musica.
Dopo la breve intro cantanta totalmente da Johanna, senza nessun tipo di apporto strumentale, si passa alla fantastica song di apertura ‘God Has All Glory’, il cui titolo è chiaramente un manifesto della fede cristiana dei cinque musicisti.
La canzone, che inizia con un crescente incedere di violini per poi svilupparsi in un tipico brano symphonic, segue molto i registri musicali di Nightwish e Within Temptation soprattutto nei cori e nelle parti orchestrali.
Bellissimo il ritornello della canzone, che viene sempre di canticchiare, uno dei migliori dell’intero album, ma soprattutto il testo, che sottolinea ed esalta la potenza divina di Dio, unico possessore della gloria eterna: “God has all Glory, Power and Honour! / He came to save us. He gave his life for us! / God has all Glory, Power and Honour! / He concurred death and brought us salvation / My life belongs to you, You promised to lead me and never leave me”.
La canzone successiva è la potente e anthemica ‘It Is Time’, influenzata parecchio da Within Temptation e qui anche dagli After Forever, in modo particolare per le ritmiche cadenzate, aggressive e per il chorus fortemente gotico. La parte finale del refrain è nella sua semplicità un inno al Signore Gesù Cristo che regna per sempre nei secoli dei secoli: “Jesus Christ Forever More”.
Altro bellissimo episodio all’interno dell’album è rappresentato dalla dolce ballad ‘Holy Secret’, prima delle due inserite in “Frozen Inside”. Il suono ammaliante di un violino sopra un suadente piano e un tappeto di tastiera introduce la canzone, che man mano prende corpo e identità nella sua struttura, con una Johanna semplicemente fantastica. Sicuramente uno dei momenti più alti dell’intero lavoro.
Arriviamo così alla title track, una delle mie song preferite del disco per variazioni di arrangiamenti, strumenti e fantasia compositiva degna delle migliori band del genere più rinomate.
Sono ancora i riflessi della musica dei Within Temptation e degli After Forever ad emergere dal brano, che comunque si articola secondo le attitudini del gruppo finlandese. Tastiere in primo piano, ottimi arrangiamenti e suoni, refrain maestosi e l’apporto sempre costante delle orchestrazioni, vero punto di forza e costante nella musica degli HB.
‘Years Go By’ è la settima ottima traccia del lavoro, avviata all’inizio da un morbido motivo di pianoforte che richiama senz’altro alle influenze metal scandinave, in particolare quelle di Sonata Arctica e Nightwish.
Dopo il pezzo successivo, ‘Ambition’, che esplora territori analoghi ai precedenti episodi, è il momento della seconda ballata, la riflessiva ‘Way’, una sorta di preghiera che i nostri innalzano a Dio. L’intermezzo parlato su un atmosfera strumentale paradisiaca né è la testimonianza più fervida: “His love can carry all your burden / And set you free / Open your heart; He’s right there with you,/ Loves you as you are / God hate sin, but he love sinners / I believe and trust in you, Jesus / Amen”.
Per concludere posso solo dire che gli HB hanno sfornato davvero un ottimo lavoro di metal cristiano, pieno di tanta buona musica e fede.
Un disco assolutamente da non perdere per tutti gli amanti del gothic/symphonic metal, che gradiranno senza alcun ombra di dubbio. Bravissimi ragazzi!

Amazing debut album for the Finnish HB, which led the band to the real consecration inside the European Christian metal scene: “Frozen Inside” is a great album that comes after two MCDs made some years ago and fully produced in their mother tongue.
Their symphonic metal takes great inspiration from the Nightwish’s sound, but despite some clear recalls to the band of Tuomas Holopainen, HB are able to show their own identity and an original trademark. One of the reason of their success is the really angelic voice of Johanna Aaltonen (when will we see an ugly gothic singer?? Probably we won’t!!), who please listener’s ears with a simple, terse and really sweet voice.
A real great job for all the other members: the keyboardist Antii Niskala weaves togheter melodies and patterns typically gothic, while Markus Malin (drummer) creates a precise and technical rhythm. The perfect production of this album is to be underlined because it sounds really strong and melodic as the classic symphonic tradition teaches; Finnish Bullroser Records was able to find a really talented band which will became for sure one of the best Christian metal band of the next years. Let’s now analyze music: after a short intro sung only by Johanna, without any instrument, there is the first song “God Has All Glory”, whose title is a clear demonstration of the Christian faith of the five musicians.
This song starts with a growing inception of violins and becomes a typical symphonic song, following the patterns made famous by Nightwish and Within Temptation, especially in chorus and orchestral pieces.
The refrain is very beautiful, one of the best of the whole album, as for the music but also for the lyrics, showing and exalting the divine power of God, the only keeper of the eternal glory: “God has all Glory, Power and Honour! / He came to save us. He gave his life for us! / God has all Glory, Power and Honour! / He concurred death and brought us salvation / My life belongs to you, You promised to lead me and never leave me”.
The next song is the strong and anthemic “It Is Time”, influenced by Within Temptation and also After Forever, as to the lilting and aggressive rhythmic lines and for the really gothic chorus. Final part of the refrain is a simple hymn to Jesus Christ who reigns into the ages of the ages: “Jesus Christ Forever More”.
Another so beauty song is the sweet ballad “Holy Secret” the first of the two included in “Frozen Inside”. The fascinating sound of a violin over a sweet piano introduces the song, which little by little gains identity and structure, showing a simply fantastic Johanna. For sure this is one of the highest top of the work.
It’s time for the title-track, maybe my favorite song of the album, because of the frequent pattern variations and of the great fantasy which is the typical feature of the greatest bands.
Still echoes of Within Temptation and After Forever are alive in this song, although they are mixed and expounded according to the Finnish band taste. Keyboards are always present; they, mixed with great sounds and musical arrangements, majestic refrains and good orchestral pieces are the strengths in HB’s music.
‘Years Go By’ is the seventh good track of the album, starting with a soft piano melody, recalling Norse metal influences, like Sonata Arctica and Nightwish.
After the next song “Ambition”, which is not different from the other songs, is the time for the second ballad: the reflexive “Way” a kind of Prayer that HB raise to God. The spoken interlude over a heavenly mood is the best faith statement: “His love can carry all your burden / And set you free / Open your heart; He’s right there with you,/ Loves you as you are / God hate sin, but he love sinners / I believe and trust in you, Jesus / Amen”.
HB made a real great and beautiful album of well played christian metal, full of nice music and faith.
A “not to be missed” album for all gothic/symphonic metal fans, they will be really satisfied. Go on like this, guys!
