Prima apparizione, nell’ormai prolifico panorama del christian metal europeo, per i finlandesi Hilastherion, death metaller arrivati al full-lenght dopo vari Demo all’attivo.
La musica presentata dai cinque musicisti è un melodic death metal di scuola scandinava, con influenze riconducibili ai maestri Children Of Bodom, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, ma anche al power neoclassico di Stratovarius, Symphony X e ai virtuosismi malmsteeniani a cui la band fa molto riferimento.
Ma indovinate un po’ chi troviamo nella formazione come drummer session? Incredibile ma vero! E’ lui, il mitico Jani Stefanovic, sempre più simbolo del metal cristiano in terra scandinava, qui nelle vesti di batterista, oltretutto mostruoso.
Venendo al punto, “Taken From Darkness” è veramente un esordio con i fiocchi! Ci troviamo, infatti, di fronte ad un grandissimo album, pieno di creatività, fantasia e musica suonata veramente alla grande e con passione. Gli Hilastherion, con questo lavoro, si proiettano nell’olimpo del death melodico e sono seriamente candidati ad ereditare un giorno la fortuna dei Children Of Bodom.
Sfuriate in bilico tra il power e il death, tappeti di tastiera atmosferici, assoli fulminei, incroci di chitarra e tastiera come da tradizione classica, un growl/scream di grande intensità e vigore, insomma una serie di ingredienti fondamentali che fanno di questo debutto una delle migliori uscite christian metal del 2007.
L’apertura del disco spetta alla stupenda ‘Sick And Rotten World’, superba speed song dalla quale riecheggiano nette sonorità di Children Of Bodom e Norther. Riff potentissimi, continui cambi di tempo, ritmiche micidiali e assoli iper tecnici presentano al meglio la band, con una delle tracce che riassume perfettamente la proposta del quintetto finnico.
Un assolo di chitarra su sottofondo ammaliante di tastiera introduce la traccia successiva, ‘See The Pain In His Face’, che sembra uscire direttamente da quella pietra miliare del death melodico che è “Something Wild” dei Children, in modo particolare per i tempi in levare e per i neoclassicismi di chitarra e tastiera che si vanno a sposare perfettamente.
Inoltre il testo del brano contiene dei passi veramente significativi, in quanto fanno trasparire il messaggio cristiano che il gruppo vuole esplicitare, ed in particolare questa song parla della sofferenza che Gesù ha patito in croce per la salvezza dell’umanità: “We all have times of misery / When we ask God why do we go through this all / But we know one man that has suffered more / His name is Jesus and He suffered for you and me / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When they pierce his hand / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When they pierce his feet / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When he take the sins from us away”.
L’unico neo in una canzone bellissima è rappresentato dal finale, che ricorda fin troppo la scala velocissima di Malmsteen in ‘Rising Force’.
Sulla stessa scia ‘Jesus Rules’, altro grande episodio che ripercorre gli stilemi e le caratteristiche già citate precedentemente, il cui chorus entra in testa senza uscirne più, complice un ottimo songwrite partorito dalla mente del leader Niclas Buss.
Tanta carica ed enfasi trasmette, invece, il brano seguente ‘Why (Song Of Despair)’, introdotto da un bel riff di chitarra che poi sfocia in un mid tempo coinvolgente e incisivo. Sono ancora una volta i fantasmi di Children Of Bodom e In Flames ad emergere dal sound, attraverso il refrain e le parti strumentali davvero notevoli: nonostante ciò nel complesso, la band, mantiene un proprio marchio e una propria attitudine.
Proseguendo nell’ascolto, ci si rende immediatamente conto del ruolo fondamentale che ricopre la tastiera, suonata nell’album dallo stesso Niclas, praticamente onnipresente in ogni parte delle canzoni, che contribuisce a creare quel forte contrasto tra melodia e aggressività che è diventato ormai usuale nelle sonorità dei gruppi death melodici.
Decisamente più lenta e cadenzata risulta la sesta traccia in scaletta, ‘Battle Of The Flesh’, che proprio per questo aspetto diventa una degli hits dell’intero disco, spezzando, attraverso le sue ritmiche più blande che ricordano persino gli Immortal, la velocità e la potenza dei primi episodi.
Si ritorna su territori speed tanto cari al combo finnico con ‘Save My Soul’ e la stupenda title track, quest’ultima parecchio power nella struttura e vero punto di incontro tra la proposta musicale e l’aspetto cristiano ribadito più volte.
La chiusura di “Taken From Darkness” spetta, infine, al trio ‘Judgement Day’, ‘A Fallen One’ e la suite ‘Story Of John’. La prima richiama senz’altro gli ultimi Children Of Bodom, con un aspetto più moderno e fresco, gli altri due brani, invece, proseguono in generale il discorso dell’album.
Cosa dire in conclusione? Gli Hilastherion con questo sorprendente debutto sfiorano davvero il capolavoro!
Pur non aggiungendo nulla di particolarmente nuovo la band finlandese svolge alla grande il proprio lavoro, sfornando dei piccoli gioiellini e regalando una prestazione maiuscola, come non si sentiva da parecchio in ambito melodic death.
Uno dei migliori esordi in assoluto che mi siano capitati tra le mani. Essenziale per tutti i fan di Children Of Bodom, Norther, In Flames, ma anche per tutti gli amanti del power neoclassico e del metal in generale.

First appearance, at the last growth panorama of the European Christian Metal, for the Finnish Hilastherion, death metallers arrived to the full-lenght album after various demos.
The music presented by the five musicians is a melodic death metal of Scandinavian school, with influences similar to the masters Children Of Bodom, in Flames, Dark Tranquillity, but also to the neoclassic power of Stratovarius, Symphony X and to the virtuous manner of Malmsteen.
But try to guess who there is in the band like drummer ? it's him ! The great Jani Stefanovic, more and more symbol of christian metal in scandinavian land, here wearing the clothes of drummer, exceedingly monstrous.
Arriving to the main point , “Taken From Darkness” is really a great exordium! We are in front of a great album , full of creativity, fantasy and music played with passion. Hilastherion, with this album, are projected in the Olympus of melodic death metal and are seriously candidated to inherit one day of the future the lucky of Children of Bodom.
Fit of rages between power and death, carpets of atmospheric keyboards, lightning solos, crosses of guitar and keyboard as classic tradition, a scream/growl of big intensity and strength, a series of fundamental ingredients that make this debut one the best comings out of christian metal in 2007.
The album opens with the wonderful ‘Sick And Rotten World’, superb speed song from which Children Of Bodom and Norther style sounds are recalled. Powerful riffs, continue changes of time, lethal rhythmical sounds and super technician solos show at the best the band, with one of the tracks that reassumes perfectly the proposal of the finnish band.
A guitar solo in an enchanted background of keyboard introduces the following track, ' See The Pain In His Face', that seems to come out directly from that Death Melodic milestone that is “Something Wild” belonging to Children Of Bodom, in particular manner for the neoclassic sounds of guitar and keyboard that are merged perfectly together.
Then the lyric of the song contains meaningful steps, 'cause they show the christian message that the band wants to make explicit, and in particular this songs talks about the Jesus' painingful on the cross for the human safety: “We all have times of misery / When we ask God why do we go through this all / But we know one man that has suffered more / His name is Jesus and He suffered for you and me / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When they pierce his hand / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When they pierce his feet / See the pain in Jesus’ face / When he take the sins from us away”.
The only flaw in a beautiful song like this one is represented by the final, that remembers too much the speed scale of Malmsteen in 'Rising Force' .
On the same line 'Jesus Rules', other big episode that goes through again the styles and the characteristics just cited previously, about which the chorus enters to our brains without going away anymore, accomplice a great songwriting come out from the mind of the leader Niclas Buss.
The following song ‘Why (Song Of Despair)’, transmits much charge and emphasis, introduced by a good riff of guitar that flows into an involving and incisive mid time. They are yet the ghosts of Children Of Bodom and In Flames ones to emerge by the sound, through the refrain and the instrumental parts really noticeable: despite this in the complex, the band, maintains an own brand and aptitude.
Going on with the listening, we can notice suddenly the fundamental rule covered by the keyboard , played in the album by the same Niclas, practically omnipresent in every part of the songs, that contributes to create that strong contrast between melody and aggressiveness that became at least usual in the sounds of the melodic death bands.
Decisively slower and cadenced results the sixth track in the bill, ‘Battle Of The Flesh’ , that really for this aspect it becomes one of the hits of the whole disc , breaking, through the softest rhythmics that remembers even Immortal band, the speed and the power of the first episodes.
We return on the speed lands so much lovely to the finnish band with 'Save My Soul' and the wonderful title track, this last song enough power in the structure and a real point of meeting between the musical porpouse and the christian aspect cited more times. The closing of “Taken From Darkness” dues, finally, to the songs ‘Judgement Day’, ‘A Fallen One’ and the suite ‘Story Of John’. The first one recalls the last Children Of Bodom, with an aspect more modern and fresher, the other two songs, instead, goes on in general with the argument of the album.
What saying at conclusion ? Hilastherion with this amazing debut are very close to the masterpiece ! Adding nothing more and particularly new the finnish band makes a good job, producing little jewels and presenting a big performance, how we haven't been listening since a lot of time in melodic death field.
This is one of the best debut got in my hands. Essential for all the fans of Chldren Of Bodom, Norther , In Flames, but also for all the lovers of the neoclassic power and of the metal in general.
