"All Of The Above"

Gli Hillsong United Band nascono da una costola della chiesa cristiana evangelica australiana Hillsong (Hills Christian Life Center) che fa capo a Sidney, famosissima soprattutto per avere come obiettivo la diffusione della fede cristiana attraverso la musica, con numerosi concerti che si svolgono in ogni parte del mondo ogni anno.
La band giovanissima, formatasi nel 2000, è prodotta dallo stesso leader carismatico della Chiesa evangelica Joel Houston ed approda per la prima volta, con un inedito studio album dopo aver collaborato in diversi live, sulla scena christian rock mondiale.
“All Of The Above” si presenta come un puro concentrato di pop rock di stampo statunitense, arricchito dalle preziose parti vocali femminili, affidate alla meravigliosa Brooke Fraser, che troviamo in molti pezzi come special guest.
L’opener del disco è ‘Point Of Difference’, bellissima song degna del periodo d’oro di Bryan Adams e Bon Jovi, con un appeal davvero notevole e un ritornello che non si stanca mai di canticchiare. Si continua con la frizzante ‘Break Free’, che da una parte, percorre gli stessi registri del precedente episodio, ma dall’altra strizza molto l’occhio a sonorità rock più moderne di influenza americana: The Rasmus e Blink 182 su tutti.
I toni si fanno decisamente più calmi con la splendida ‘Desperate People’, brano oriented rock raffinatissimo, particolarmente incisivo negli arrangiamenti e nelle facili melodie che lo caratterizzano per tutta la sua durata. Sulla stessa linea d’onda, la canzone successiva, ‘Devotion’, che durante il suo incedere abbastanza lineare e semplice, sembra davvero emanare un qualcosa di mistico e speciale.
Arriviamo così alla prima delle varie ballate del disco, la suggestiva ‘Lead Me To The Cross’, interpretata dalla voce stupenda di Brooke Fraser, ospite fissa degli appuntamenti live degli Hillsong. Il pezzo, oltre ad avere tutte le carte in regola per poter essere in futuro una ballad da compilation, presenta un testo veramente significativo che trasmette chiari ed espliciti riferimenti cristiani, rivolti direttamente al Signore misericordioso che si è sacrificato per la salvezza dell’uomo: “Savior I come / Quiet my soul remember / Redemptions hill / Where Your blood was spilled / For my ransom / Everything I once held dear / I count it all as lost / Lead me to the cross / Where Your love poured out / Bring me to my knees / Lord I lay me down / Rid me of myself / I belong to You / Lead me, lead me to the cross”.
‘Hosanna’ è un vero e proprio inno cantato e innalzato nell’alto dei cieli dalla band australiana. La versione realizzata nel CD è una rivisitazione di un classico che ormai viene proposto sempre nei numerosi appuntamenti dal vivo e, in questo nuovo adattamento, acquisisce maggiore vigore e corposità, rendendolo uno degli episodi più azzeccati dell’intero lavoro. Anche in questa song, come del resto in quasi tutte, si può notare l’influsso del pop/rock/AOR anni ’80 e ‘90, che trovò in Bon Jovi, Europe, White Lion e Bryan Adams i suoi migliori interpreti.
Man mano che l’album scorre senza intoppi, dove forse solo ‘Found’ sembra essere l’unico calo di tensione, ci si accorge dell’ottima produzione firmata Joel Houston, vero simbolo del marchio Hillsong.
Si ritorna a spingere sull’acceleratore con le tracce successive, ‘Solution’ e ‘My Future Decided’, che risollevano il grado di coinvolgimento rockettaro, dopo una serie di episodi più miti. Queste canzoni confermano quanto detto precedentemente per ‘Point Of Difference’ e ‘Break Free’ e sono senz’altro tra i brani più vivaci e godibili, che faranno la loro fortuna soprattutto in sede live. Approccio decisamente improntato su sonorità moderne, in alcuni frangenti quasi alternative, che ricorda ancora Blink, The Rasmus, Nickelback, ma anche Everyday Sunday, altra christian band in voga dopo il recente esordio.
Degne di nota, le lyrics di ‘My Future Decided’, dove ancora una volta il gruppo si rivolge direttamente a Gesù Cristo, riconoscendolo come la roccia della vita ed esempio da seguire sempre nel cammino quotidiano: “You hold the future in your hands / You know my dreams and you have a plan / And as you light my way, I'll follow you / My eyes on all of the above / My soul secure in all you've done / My minds made up / And you are the only one for me / Jesus, savior, in my life you are everything / My future decided, I will praise your name / And I know that I am, I am yours / Yeah, I know that that I am, I am yours”.
‘Never Let Me Go’ è la seconda ballata del CD, che però, purtroppo, nonostante il magico clima che si respira nel suo incedere, non riesce ad emergere come dovrebbe e risulta indubbiamente inferiore a ‘Lead Me To The Cross’ e persino alla successiva ‘You’, cantata ancora da Brooke, in un’atmosfera di preghiera e meditazione unica.
La conclusione di “All Of The Above” è affidata a ‘Saviour King’,altro brano molto pop old style, che dopo un inizio in sordina esplode in un ritornello solare e gioioso come ultimo atto di un album che proietta direttamente gli Hillsong United tra le rock band cristiane più stimate e apprezzate.
Una citazione speciale spetta, oltre che ai giovanissimi musicisti di età compresa tra i diciannove e i ventidue anni, al grande producer Joel Houston che ha svolto veramente un lavoro eccellente e ha creduto nelle ottime qualità di questi ragazzi.
Ci auguriamo, quindi, di poter vedere al più presto gli Hillsong dalle nostre parti, per qualche bel concerto e aspettiamo con impazienza il prossimo full-lenght in studio.

Hillsong United Band was born from a rib of the Hillsong australian evangelic christian church (Hills Christian Life Center) and it's located in Sidney, very famous above all for having like target the spreading of the christian faith through the music, with several concerts, and they carry out in a lot of countries every year.
The young band, formed in 2000, is produced by the same carismatic leader of the evangelic Church Joel Houston and it comes out for the first time, with a studio album after collaborating in different lives, on the worldwide rock christian scene.
"All Of The Above" is presented like a pure concentrated of pop rock Usa style, enriched with the precious female voices, granted to marvellous Brooke Fraser, whom we find in a lot of tracks as special guest. ‘Point Of Difference’ is the opening song of the album, very beautiful song like the golden period of Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi, with a remarkable appeal and a refrain that a person would be never tired of singing. We continue with the sparkling 'Break Free', that from a way, it goes along the same melodies of the previous episode, but from the other way has more modern sounds of american influence: above all The Rasmus and Blink 182.
The tones are decisely more quiet with the splendid 'Desperate People', very elegant track, mainly incisive in the arrangements and in the easy melodies that characterize it for all its duration. On the same line wave, the following song, 'Devotion', that during its playing enough linear and simple, it seems it emanates something mystic and special.
So we arrive to the first song of the various ballads of the disc, the suggestive 'Lead Me To The Cross', interpretate by the wonderful voice of Brooke Frase, stared guest of the Hillsong's appointments at live. The piece, other than having all the right cards to be a compilation ballad in the future, it's sacrified for the human safety: “Savior I come / Quiet my soul remember / Redemptions hill / Where Your blood was spilled / For my ransom / Everything I once held dear / I count it all as lost / Lead me to the cross / Where Your love poured out / Bring me to my knees / Lord I lay me down / Rid me of myself / I belong to You / Lead me, lead me to the cross”.
'Hosanna' it's a real and own hymn singes and raised to the high of skies by the australian band. The version realized in the CD it's a revival of a classic that has just been proposed always along the numerous live appointments and, in this new adapting, it acquires a better vigour and thickness, becoming one of the better right episodes of the whole work. Also in this song, like in almost all songs, we can notice the pop/rock/AOR influence of 80's and 90's, that found in Bon Jovi, Europe, White Lion e Bryan Adams its best singers. With the listening of the album without breaks, where maybe only 'Found' seems to be the only fall of tension, we can notice the good production signed Joel Houston, real symbol of the Hollsong brand.
We return to push the accelerator with the following tracks, 'Solution' and 'My Future Decided', that rise again the rocker involvement degree, after a series of episodes more quiet. These songs confirm what is said previously for ‘Point Of Difference’ and ‘Break Free’ and they are surely among the happy and joyfull songs, that will make their lucky above all during the live concerts. Approach decisely based on modern sounds, in some moments almost alternative, that remembers yet Blink, The Rasmus, Nickelback, but also Everyday Sunday, another christian band yet famous after their recent debut.
Worthy to be mentioned, the lyrics of 'My Future Decided', where yet a time the band is directed directly to Jesus Christ, recognizing him like the rock of the life and example to follow always along the everyday path : “You hold the future in your hands / You know my dreams and you have a plan / And as you light my way, I'll follow you / My eyes on all of the above / My soul secure in all you've done / My minds made up / And you are the only one for me / Jesus, savior, in my life you are everything / My future decided, I will praise your name / And I know that I am, I am yours / Yeah, I know that that I am, I am yours”.
‘Never Let Me Go’ is the second ballad of the CD, that however, unfortunately, althought the magic atmosphear that we can breath along its path, it isn't able to emerge like it should, and it results certainly inferior to ‘Lead Me To The Cross’ and even to the following 'You', singed yet by Brooke, in an atmosphear of unic praying and meditation.
The conclusion of “All Of The Above” is granted to ‘Saviour King’, another song with pop old style, that after a beginning with dim sounds it explodes in a sunny and joyful refrain like the last act of an album that directly show the Hillsong United among most loved and appreciated christian rock bands. A special mention is dedicated to the big producer Joel Houston that made really an excellent job and he believed in the great qualities of these guys and then to the young musicians with the age between 19 and 22 years old.
We wish, so, to be able to watch as soon as we can Hillsong band here in Italy, for some nice concerts and we're impatiently looking for the next full-lenght studio album.
