HIS WITNESS  "Kingdom Come"

La storia del finora unico esistente album degli His Witness è abbastanza singolare. “Kingdom Come” è stato registrato originalmente nel 1988 da Randy Thomas ma praticamente mai distribuito. Praticamente il leader del gruppo e singer Ken Redding fece realizzare alcune copie in cassetta che vennero vendute o regalate nelle date live, ma a parte questo nulla… si può quindi affermare che questo lavoro è rimasto, sino ad oggi, il classico esempio di release non prodotta.
Ora, grazie alla Retroactive Records e con il contributo dell’amico di Redding, ossia Bill Menchen (anche chitarrista dei Final Axe, The Seventh Power, Titanic, ecc.), che ha spinto il singer a quest’operazione di restauro, le cassette originali dell’album sono state riprese e sistemate con aggiunta di parti di chitarra quà e là (opera di Menchen) e qualche altra aggiustatina.
Il risultato è di fatto “Kingdom Come” il primo vero e proprio album ufficiale per gli His Witness. Il sound dei nostri è un classico e rinomato melodic metal americano che andava di moda proprio negli anni ’80.
Anche a livello lirico i nostri ricalcano lo stile dell’epoca, con testi molto aperti, semplici e diretti, che senza preamboli esaltano Dio, Gesù Cristo e la fede cristiana.
Molti i brani che si fanno notare, come l’ariosa ‘Jesus Heals’, che vanta ottimi cori e una melodia che conquista subito. Il testo evidenzia la missione salvifica di Cristo: “Hope that you can see / That you can be set free / Righteousness is imparted / When you let Him in / He forgives your sin / Jesus heals the broken hearted.”
Decisamente americana, con grande introduzione di chitarra di Ronee Pena, è la successiva ‘Call On Him’, pezzo da novanta di hard rock potente e diretto, che presenta da un lato ottimi riff di chitarra (compreso un ottimo assolo) e dall’altro una buona prova di Ken al microfono.
Altro brano da segnalare è senz’altro la rocky ‘Pick Up Your Cross’, canzone che ben evidenzia lo spirito evangelizzatore ed orgoglioso dei nostri, che cantano (con uno stile molto Stryper-oriented) di come si debba sfoggiare la propria fede con orgoglio: “Surely I say to you / There are some standing here / Who will not see death until they see Him / / Pick up your cross / And follow me…”
Tutto sommato non vi sono enormi vette compositive in questo album, ma i brani scorrono abbastanza agevolmente, nonostante gli evidenti momenti un po’ claudicanti dovuti da un lato al songwriting datato e d’altro canto ai suoni non perfetti (nonostante la tecnologia i nostri sono infatti partiti dalle cassette originali del 1988).
Ora staremo a vedere se la storia degli His Witness avrà un seguito.

The history of the unique and existing album of His Witness band is enough singular. “Kingdom Come” was originally recorded in 1988 by Randy Thomas but practically it was never sold by a recording industry. Practically the leader of the band and singer Ken Redding, realized some tape copies that were sold or presented during their live shows. We can affirm that this album remained, till today, the classic example of a release not produced.
Now thanks to Retroactive Records and with the contribute of the friend of Redding, Bill Menchen (also guitar player of Final Axe, The Seven Power, Titanic, etc. ) that forced the singer to this restoration operation, the original tapes of the album were retaken and fixed adding guitar parts somewhere (Menchen job) and some other fix.
The result is “Kingdom Come” the first and real ufficial album of His Witness. The sound is a famous and classic American melodic metal style, that was a custom during the 80’s .
Also to the lyric level the band shows up the style of that period, with lyrics very opened, simple and direct, that without preambles exalt God, Jesus Christ and the Christian Faith.
The noticed songs are a lot, like the airy ‘Jesus Heals’ , that has excellent chorus and a melody that suddenly conquers. The lyric underlines the safety mission of Christ : “Hope that you can see / That you can be set free / Righteousness is imparted / When you let Him in / He forgives your sin / Jesus heals the broken hearted.”
Decisely American, with a big guitar introduction of Ronee Pena, is the following ‘Call On Him’ , a very nice piece of hard rock , powerful and direct, that shows for a part excellent guitar riffs (and an excellent solo) and for the other part a good proof of Ken at the microphone.
Another song to signal is without dubts the rocky ‘Pick Up Your Cross’ , a song that well underlines the evangelic spirit of this band, that sing (with a style very Stryper oriented) how you must show your faith with pride : “Surely I say to you / There are some standing here / Who will not see death until they see Him / / Pick up your cross / And follow me…”
By the way there aren’t enormous constituent tops in this album, but the songs flow enough easily, despite the evident moments for a while lame due to a dated song writing and to the sounds not perfects (despite the technology of this band started from the original tapes of 1988).
Now we’ll see if the history of His Witness will have a sequel.
