IN GRIEF  "Deserted Soul"

Gli In Grief, che debuttano con questo CD intitolato "Deserted Soul", hanno nella proposta sonora abbastanza atipica e personale il loro punto di forza.
I nostri mischiano un sound death metal tecnico, che ricorda abbastanza gli svedesi Hypocrisy o i più tecnici Scar Symmetry, a parecchi fraseggi di black sinfonico; infine le tracce vengono ulterirmente arricchite da evidenti interventi progressive (ricordano a tratti una sorta di Dream Theater estremizzati) che rendono ancor più ricercate le composizioni.
Esempio principale dello stile del gruppo norvegese è la title-track, 'Deserted Soul', che dopo un inizio di death cadenzato e quadrato, affidato alla sezione ritmica formata da Vegard Hellan (batteria) e Benny Andrè Røste (basso ma anche chitarra), si apre letteralmente a una serie di fraseggi ed assoli davvero sorprendenti e puramente progressive che vedono prima protagonista alla chitarra Banny Andrè Røste e poi alle tastiere Daniel Sandvik.
Da segnalare come, all'interno di ogni brano, il singer David Sandvik (già conosciuto con i Roots Of Tragedy e con i Sjelehost) utilizzi sia il growl profondo sia la voce "pulita".
Lo stesso duello in stile anni '70 fra assoli di chitarra e tastiera lo si trova anche nella successiva 'In The End', caratterizzata da atmosfere ancor più plumbee.
I brani sono mediamente lunghi, variando tra i sei minuti di 'Deserted Soul' e i quasi dieci di 'Weak', pezzo che conclude il CD e ci consegna gli In Grief dal gusto più black sinfonico, con grandiose partiture di tastiere e growl strascicato e lancinante.
Al contrario i momenti più crudi e death oriented si hanno fra i primi pezzi, introdotti dalla lunghissima strumentale 'Darkening Horizon' (a dir la verità fin troppo lunga e noiosa...).
A livello di testi gli In Grief non parlano solo direttamente di cristianesimo e sorprendono anche con un brano come 'Invited War', che accusa il fanatismo religioso dell'islam più violento: "Moment of silence is here / Anger and revenge they share / Killing for their God / Cutting way for Jihad / Standing in their way / Fighting what they say / Is a way to end your life / By their hand / Clean your heart and head".
Terribile è invece il testo di 'In The End' che sottolinea di come l'uomo moderno che abbandona la fede si pentirà amaramente: "In the end / we will cry / To the sky / We denied / when we lost / Our Faith / in good ways / we must pay, for what we've done".
La tematica della corruzione e della decadenza causata dalla società moderna riecheggia anche in 'Modern Truth'.
In definitiva con "Deserted Soul" abbiamo un primo lavoro interessante di una band che non teme di fare un crossover di almeno tre stili differenti, mantenendo un connotato cupo, sia nella musica che nei testi.

In Grief band, that debuts with this CD titled “Desert Soul”, has its strength in the sound proposal which is enough atypical and personal.
They mix a technical death metal sound, that remembers enough the swedish Hypocrisy or the more technical Scar Symmetry, with enough phrasings of symphonic black metal; at the end the tracks have enriched by evident progressive interventions (they remember sometimes a kind of extreme Dream Theatre style) that make more researched the compositions.
A main example of the style of the norwegian group is the title-track ‘Desert Soul’ that after a beginning of cadenced and squared death metal, committed to the rhythmic section formed by Vergan Hellan (drums) and Benny Andrè Røste (guitar and bass guitar), it opens to a series of phrasings and solos really astonishing and purely progressive that sees like first protagonist at guitar Banny Andrè Røste and then at keyboards Daniel Sandvik.
It’s important to notice how inside every track, the singer David Sandvik (just known with Roots Of Tragedy and with Sjelehost) uses both deep growl and “clean” voice.
We can find the same thing in 70’s typical style among guitar and keyboards solos also in the following track ‘In The End’, characterized by more leaden atmospheres.
The songs are usually long, varying from six minutes of the song ‘Desert Soul’ to almost ten minutes of the song ‘Weak’ the piece that ends the CD and we can see In Grief band with great scores of keyboards and a piercing growl.
At the contrary we can find the cruder moments and death oriented among the first pieces, introduced by ‘Darkening Horizon’ the longest instrumental song of the album (saying the truth too much long and boring…).
At the lyrical level In Grief band doesn’t talk only about christian religion and they surprise also with a song like ‘Invited War’ which accuses the religious fanaticism of the most violent side of Islam: "Moment of silence is here / Anger and revenge they share / Killing for their God / Cutting way for Jihad / Standing in their way / Fighting what they say / Is a way to end your life / By their hand / Clean your heart and head".
Instead the lyric of the song ‘In The End’ is terrible that underlines how the modern man abandons the faith and he will repents bitterly : "In the end / we will cry / To the sky / We denied / when we lost / Our Faith / in good ways / we must pay, for what we've done".
At the end with “Desert Soul” we have a first interesting work of a band that doesn’t have fear to make a crossover of at least three different styles, maintaining a dark feature, both in the music and in the lyrics.
