Il chitarrista Cliff Powell (come artista Cliffy Huntington) giunge a costruire il suo gruppo di hard rock evangelico solo nel 2006, dopo un passato trascorso prima in una band di punk rock influenzata dai Ramones come gli Huntingtons (a metà degli anni novanta) e un periodo con il combo dei The stivs, sempre nello stile del precedente act. Il suo sogno era però di riportare in auge un certo tipo di sonorità, accompagnate da testi di stampo cristiano.
Nascono quindi, in Houston, nel Texas, i Main Line Riders, band che come dimostra la prima release, hanno davvero i numeri per farsi apprezzare da tutti gli amanti di questo genere.
Di cosa parliamo in particolare? Beh, di quel sound che faceva impazzire Los Angeles negli anni ’80, che nella scena cristiana può ricordare gli X-Sinner o i Guardian o ancora i Rage Of Angels, mentre nall’ambito secolare i gruppi di riferimento sono gli storici L. A. Guns, Junkyard (dei quali viene aggiunta in conclusione la bonus track cover di Shot In The Dark’, che dà anche il titolo al CD), Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat.
Nei riff delle song di “Shot In The Dark” è comunque sempre ben presente il taglio punk che deriva dalla storia di Cliffy.
Veramente eccelso è poi l’approccio al microfono di Mikey Mayehm, sempre alla cartavetra senza esagerazione. Il vero punto forte della band è il “tiro” assolutamente irresistibile di quasi tutti i brani, che colpiscono e sconvolgono il bassoventre sin dal primo ascolto; impossibile non mettersi a fare “air guitar” ascoltando brani come ‘One Way Ticket To Love’ o non mettersi a fare headbanging con ‘Put The Hammer Down’.
So che per molti può risultare strano accostare il black metal a testi cristiani, ma forse ancor di più sembra essere accostare queste sonorià a liriche di speranza cristiana, perchè questo sound, il glam, l’heavy rock sporco e grezzo, è sempre stato prerogativa di eccessi, di droga, sesso e rock’n’roll. Invece i Main Line Riders infondono in questi pezzi dai refrain irresistibili messaggi di speranza che ci fan capire quanto grande sia l’accostamento del cristianesimo alla musica, di qualsiasi genere essa sia.
Le canzoni sono tutte brevi ed intense e decisamente violente, eccetto la ballad ‘Here I Am’, che si apre con una parte acustica e poi continua con la solita predominanza della chitarra ritmica di Cliffy e di Blackway; il pezzo è infine arricchito da un assolo in stile bluesy.
L’unico brano che supera i tre minuti di lunghezza è ‘We Are The Ready Ones’ (posta quasi in conclusione), corale, che ricorda alcuni pezzi noti dei Guns’n’Roses, ed è caratterizata da un accavallamento di due linee vocali sino all’esplosione di un refrain davvero eccelso e molto melodico. Il brano, manifesto del credo dei nostri, evidenzia come una vita da bruciare in fretta, simbolo del rock’n’roll, sia in realtà un disastro e che ognuno di noi devo ragionare con la propria testa senza farsi influenzare dalla massa che esagera: “I know what it’s like to wake up every mornin’ feelin’ like you just can’t face the day / When everyone around you is just tryin’ to make you feel like you don’t even matter all all the while they’re tryin’ to make themselves seem high just bringin’ you down but, no, take control and show ‘em who you are / Now listen headin’ down that lonely higway never kept my motor clean / City streets were callin’ me but that fast lane life ain’t meant to be.”
Il CD invece si apre con due mazzate come ‘Ride The Main Line’, che evidenzia moltissimo l’eredità punk di Cliffy e che viene subito seguito dalla bellissima ‘One Ticket To Love’, brano che vive della potenza del guitar riffing e della graffiante voce di Mikey, che usa in alcune parti anche linee vocali filtrate.
Alcuni accenni di tradizione Ac/Dc e X-Sinners sono riscontrabili nella micidiale ‘Throwin' Bones To The Wolves’, uno dei brani più coinvolgenti del lotto, con Mikey sugli scudi grazie ad alcuni acuti inaspettati. Il brano ha anche lui un forte messaggio positivo e descrive come sia possible risollevarsi da un passato distruttivo.
Ricordiamo infine un altro pezzo da novanta del disco, ossia la rullante ‘I Walk Alone’, che ha come protagonisti il drumming dinamico di Josho e la linea di basso di Pj; ancora importante è il messaggio che include il vero scopo dei nostri, la redenzione dopo un passato di sbagli: “With visions of redemption / I walk against the crowd / Feelin' bad is just a new sensation / Bet your bottom dollar / It cuts like a knife / All dressed up, I got nowhere to go, but / I walk alone / Chained to this stone now / In this small town / I walk alone / Must I live my days in these concrete ways.”
Per chi ama il vecchio heavy rock glam questo CD è assolutamente da avere.

The guitar player Cliff Power (name artist Cliffy Huntington ) formed his evangelic hard rock band only in 2006, after a past passed before in a punk rock band influenced by Ramones like the Huntingtons (in the middle of 90's) and a period with the combo of The Stives, always in the style of the previous act.
But his dream was to take back alive a sort of sounds, accompained by christian lyrics. They formed so, in Houston (Texas), Main Line Riders, a band that demonstrates with their first release, to have the numbers to be appreciated from all the lovers of this genre. What are we talking about in particular?
Well, about that kind of sound that made crazy a lot of people during 80's, that in the christian scene we can remember the bands X-Sinner or Guardian or yet Rage Of Angels, while in secular field the referencing bands are the historical L.A. Guns, Junkyard (about whom it is added at conclusion the bonus track cover 'Shot In The Dark', that gives also the title to CD), Hanoi Rocks, Faster Pussycat. In the riff songs of "Shot In The Dark" is however always present the punk connotation that derives from the Cliffy's history. Really excellent is then the approach to the microphone of Mikey Mayehm, always with the rough voice without exaggeration. The real strong point of the band is the "shooting" absolutely unresistable of almost all its tracks, that strike and agitate the lower abdomen since the first listening; impossible to not make "air guitar" listening tracks like "One Way Ticket To Love" or to not make headbanging with "Put The Hammer Down".
I know that for a lot of people it could result strange bringing near black metal to christian lyrics, but maybe it is more strange to bring near these sounds to lyrics of christian hope, because this sound, glam, heavy rock dirty and raw, was always an objective of excesses, drug, sex and rock'n'roll. Instead Main Line Riders infuse infuse in these lyrics with irresistable refrains messages of hope that make us understanding how much big is the approaching of the christian religion to the music, for every genre it can be.
The songs are all short and intense and decisely violent, except the ballad 'Here I Am', that it opens with an acoustic part and it continues with the usual predominance of the rhytmic guitar of Cliffy and of Blackway; the song then is enriched by a blues assolo.
The only song that surpasses the lenght of three minutes is ‘We Are The Ready Ones’ (put almost at conclusion), chorus song, that remember some famouse Guns'n'Roses songs, and it is characterized by a crossing of two vowel lines until to the explosion of a refrain really excellent and much melodic.
The lyrics, manifest of the belief of the band, evidences as a life to burn fastly, rock'n'roll symbol, is in reality a disaster and that everyone of us have to reason with out mind without being influenced by the people that exaggerates : "I know what it’s like to wake up every mornin’feelin’ like you just can’t face the day / When everyone around you is just tryin’ to make you feel like you don’t even matter all all the while they’re tryin’ to make themselves seem high just bringin’ you down but, no, take control and show ‘em who you are / Now listen headin’ down that lonely higway never kept my motor clean / City streets were callin’ me but that fast lane life ain’t meant to be.”
The album instead it opens with two blows like ‘Ride The Main Line’, that evidences a lot the punk eredity of Cliffy and it comes suddenly followed by the beautiful ‘One Ticket To Love’, song that lives of the power of the guitar riffing and of the scratching voice of Mikey, who uses in some parts also vowel filtered lines.
Some hints of Ac/Dc and X-Sinners tradition are reachable in the lethal ‘Throwin' Bones To The Wolves’, one of the most involving songs, with Mikey on the shields thanks to some unwaited acutes. The song lyric has a strong positive message too and it describes how it is possible rise again from a distructive past.
Finally we remember another masterpiece of the album, the rolling ‘I Walk Alone’, that has like protagonists the dynamic drumming of Josho and the bass line of Pj; yet important it is the message that includes the real reason of this band, the redemption after a past of wrongs : “With visions of redemption / I walk against the crowd / Feelin' bad is just a new sensation / Bet your bottom dollar / It cuts like a knife / All dressed up, I got nowhere to go, but / I walk alone / Chained to this stone now / In this small town / I walk alone / Must I live my days in these concrete ways.” For the lovers of the old heavy rock glam it is a CD to buy absolutely.
