MARTYRS SHRINE  "Martyrs Shrine"

I Martyrs Shrine sono il gruppo di Mike Forsberg (Cybergrind, Dimentia, Catwitch) alla voce e batteria e di Michael Carlisle a chitarra e basso, entrambi ex membri degli ultranoti Mortification, leggenda australiana.
L’opera prima dei nostri è stata prima autoprodotta nel 2007 in modo molto spartano; poi, nel 2008, la Soundmass ha provveduto a realizzare in modo professionale il lavoro, con tanto di evocativa cover, ossia una foto rielaborata datata 1945 del cimitero militare di Tarakan, nel Borneo.
La creatura dei due membri della più famosa band di death/thrash metal cristiano non poteva che essere un altro esempio che rimanesse sulla scia della band madre.
Gli otto brani di “Martyrs Shrine” sono quindi inseriti in un contesto criticabile, da un lato, per scarsa fantasia, di death metal compatto e veloce, anche se non mancano momenti rallentati.
D’altro canto, chi ama il genere e non disegna il mosh (chi si ricorda i secolari Anthrax o gli Exodus?) potrà trovare anche passaggi thrash molto divertenti, anche a partire dalla prima elaborata song ‘The Final Devastation Of The Terrorthrone’.
A livello lirico il primo pezzo, che evidenzia musicalmente il gusto per i cambi di tempo e tutto ciò che già conosciamo del genere, è un attacco alla militarizzazione e alla propaganda degli stati (si possono ascoltare anche,a metà brano, alcuni passaggi di uno dei tanti folli discorsi di Hitler): “Follow your life / down life's wicked path / full of hate / incentive for the kill / Raise the flag / Crush the filth / War of annihilation / enemy of the state / Act of revenge / burn with dissension / land of idol minds / Model of indecision.”
Abbastanza complessa e piena di cambi di tempo e variazioni è anche l’ottima ‘Butchered Planet’, che mostra da un lato l’abilità dei due musicisti nell’aspetto ritmico della composizione con basso e batteria in primissimo piano, dall’altro evidenzia anche una coscienza ecologica nel testo, in cui si vuol scuotere la popolazione mondiale a svegliarsi dal torpore per salvare la situazione di un pianeta che sta rovinando se stesso: “Looming devastation / Of a planet dying / Like a butchered corpse we rot; / On your knees we suffer because of those before us; / It’s time to make the change.”
Peccato che dopo pochi brani però i limiti della release emergano con chiarezza, ossia la voce in growl di Mike, eccessivamente monotona (proprio in ‘Butchered Planet’ l’accostamento a parti in cantato “pulito” sottolineano ancor di più questa pecca), d’altro canto un trademark compositivo fin troppo abusato che può colpire solo i più appassionati al death viscerale, come conferma il brano di puro assalto sonoro, violentissimo, di ‘Amongst The Putrid’. Un inno ai martiri morti in guerra esce dal monumentale death della title-track: “Our flag / Our nation / Our families / Noble ideals / They served / They suffered / Commemoration / For those who died.”
Al contrario la speranza, in un oceano di disperazione che emerge dalle lyric di quest’album, si evince dalla consclusiva ‘Apparition’, brano lento e melodico, con inserti più ampi di voce “pulita”: “Oh God, I long for release from this depth / This hole in the ground – where I dwell.”
In conclusione quindi il debutto degli australiani convince dal punto di vista contenutistico e per alcuni brani, ma nel complesso si rivela un classico album di death/thrash metal che possiamo consigliare solo ai più fanatici del genere descritto.

Martyrs Shrine is the band of Mike Forsberg (Cybergrind, Dimentica, Catwitch) at the voice and drums and Michael Carlisle at guitar and bass, both of them ex members of the famous band Mortification, Australian legend.
The first project of this band was at first self produced in 2007 in a coarse way; then in 2008, the Soundmass recording industry provided to realize in a very professional way the project, with an evocative cover, a revised picture made in 1945 representing the military cemetery of Tarakan, in Borneo.
The creature of the members of the most famous band of death/thrash Christian metal couldn’t be nothing less than another example that would have remained in the same line of the mother band.
The eight songs of “Martyr Shrine” are inserted in a criticizable context, from a side, for the scarce fantasy, of compact and fast death metal, even if it doesn’t miss slow down moments.
By the way, the lovers of this genre and it likes the mosh (who remembers the secular Anthrax or Exodus band ? ) can find also thrash passages very funny, also starting from the first elaborated song ‘The Final Devastation Of The Terrorthrone’ .
At lyrics level the first piece, that underlines musically the taste fot the changes of time and everything we just know about this genre, it’s an attack to the militarization and to the propaganda of the countries (you can listen also at the middle of the song, some passages of the mad discourses of Hitler ): “Follow your life / down life's wicked path / full of hate / incentive for the kill / Raise the flag / Crush the filth / War of annihilation / enemy of the state / Act of revenge / burn with dissension / land of idol minds / Model of indecision.”
Enough complex and also full of changing times and variations is the excellent ‘Butchered Planet’ that shows from a part the ability of the two musicians in the rhythmic compositing aspect with bass and drums at foreground, and from the other part it underlines also an ecologic conscience in the lyric, in which they want to shake the worl population to wake up from the torpor to save the situation of a planet that it’s ruining itself: “Looming devastation / Of a planet dying / Like a butchered corpse we rot; / On your knees we suffer because of those before us; / It’s time to make the change.”
Pity that after some songs the limits of this release emerge with clarity, the voice in growl of Mike, excessively monotonous (above all in ‘Butchered Planet’ the approaching of the singing sometimes “clean” it underlines more this fault) , by the other way a constituent trademark most of all abused that can strike only the most passionate fans to visceral death as it confirms the song of pure sound assault, very violent, of ‘Amongst The Putrid’.
An hymn to the martyrs death in war, it comes out from the monumental death of the title track: “Our flag / Our nation / Our families / Noble ideals / They served / They suffered / Commemoration / For those who died.”
In conclusion the debut of the Australian band convinces from the point of pertaining to content view and for some songs, but at the complex it reveals like a classic album of death/thrash metal that we can suggest to the most fanatic fans of this genre.
