In seguito al capolavoro racchiuso nei due dischi di “The Anatomy Of Melancholy”, i My Silent Wake sono tornati con un CD intitolato “A Garland Of Tears”. Il nuovo album è stato rilasciato dalla Bombworks Records e non ha lo stesso minutaggio del lavoro precedente.
Qui si possono trovare solo sette canzoni e quindi i fan del gruppo si troveranno spiazzati considerando che solitamente la band propone una quantità di materiale ben più ricco.
Comunque per tutto ciò che concerne il lato artistico incontriamo l'ottimo livello al quale siamo già abituati. Senza effettuare grandi cambiamenti di stile la band di Ian Arkley (voce e chitarra) ci offre delle buone song di death/doom metal con influenze gotiche e folk, anche se l'aspetto dark e grim è decisamente aumentato. Dal punto di vista vocale possiamo osservare anche la presenza di elementi black mai riscontrati prima, almeno non in misura così massiccia.
Già a partire dal primo pezzo, ‘Tunnels’, possiamo notare come cambia il sound dei nostri. La canzone inizia con chitarre lente accompagnate da un misterioso effetto che vuol ricreare il vento. Poi si inserisce il basso che sembra avvolgerci completamente. Possiamo quindi assaporare la melodia del brano in cui si passa da delicate linee vocali a momenti in cui prende il sopravvento un growl in stile death metal. A livello di suoni le melodie intrecciate dal basso e dalle chitarre sono decisamente cupe e vivono un crescendo espressivo impressionante.
L’ascoltatore, nell'atto di scoprire questa song, può quasi sentirsi immerso in un oscuro tunnel dove la speranza è rivolta solo alla lontana luce che si intravede al termine del corridoio.
Il secondo pezzo, intitolato ‘Cruel Grey Skies’, esprime tristi emozioni: il brano è caratterizzato da tonalità musicali che esprimono dolore, quasi a voler sottolineare con la musica le ferite che turbano i nostri cuori, con la cornice della sussurrante voce di Ian Arkley. Aggiungiamo che nella song si possono ascoltare anche passaggi in cui la linea vocale si lancia in uno screaming black.
Nella breve e strumentale ‘Pendulum’ compaiono melodie medievale e passaggi folk metal. Un delicato, dolce mandolino ed un clarinetto si uniscono al caldo suono di una chitarra acustica; infine un tamburello fa da cornice agli strumenti citati.
Le due canzoni seguenti, ossia ‘By My Own Hand’ e ‘Fall Of The Flightless’, sono state composte in tipico stile death/doom metal e sono caratterizzate da una bella combinazione di basso, chitarre ritmiche e di ottime linee vocali.
Nell’album l’ascoltatore può anche trovare una ballata intitolata ‘Fallen Leaves’ che presenta un cantato tranquillo e pulito di Ian accomagnato dal mellifluo suono di violoncello e chitarre classiche.
La track ‘Wilderness Of Thorns’, che chiude il disco, convincerà sicuramente molti fan.
La traccia è colma di melodie interessanti che catturano l'attenzione sin dal primo ascolto. Anche a livello ritmico il pezzo convince, grazie a una buona parte di batteria e ottimi riff di chitarra; questo pezzo rappresenta, potremmo dire nel migliore dei modi, la vera potenza dei My Silent Wake. Anche in questo brano, in dosi importanti, troviamo il cantato in screaming black, mentre a livello musicale la canzone ricorda un po' lo stile dell'album intitolato “Martyrium” dei norvegesi black metaller Antestor.
Dal punto di vista dei testi l’album è più dark rispetto al passato. Possiamo trovare infatti più depressione e dolore nelle lyrics, come conferma il testo di 'Tunnels': “From the open fields they beckon us / Tunnels / As the rains fall down they cover us / (…) How can I ever feel the sun again? / Never ending the walls of fear and decay / Far behind I can still hear the rain / Circle of light still draws me away.”
Ad ogni modo le nuove canzoni non trattano direttamente tematiche cristiane, ma ci possiamo trovare una ricerca della speranza, un incoraggiamento nella ricerca della felicità, della luce, come nel caso della song 'Cruel Grey Skies': “Leave behind all your tears / All your hate / All your desolation / Drift upon open seas / Distant shores rise for three / For you, for your salvation.”
Concludiamo sottolineando come Ian Arkley abbia voluto inserire nel booklet del CD la motivazione che l'ha portato a scrivere questi nuovi pezzi (e che va vista come un vero e proprio manifesto atto a combattere la depressione e l'istinto suicida): ”(…) It is important to consider that change will come, and it is not always for the worst… good as well as bad can come out of the blue. There is light at the end of the tunnel even if it takes months, even years to walk through it.”/i> (“E’ importante considerare che il cambiamento arriverà e non è sempre un cambiamento rivolto a far si che le cose peggiorino. C’e’ la luce alla fine del tunnel anche se dovessimo impiegare mesi o anche anni per arrivarci con il nostro cammino.“)

After enormous work enclosed in two discs with the titile “The Anatomy Of Melancholy”, My Silent Wake has back to us with their new material. Current full-length album under the title “A Garland Of Tears” constantly released upon the wings of Bombworks Records, isn’t so long as the previous. We’ll find there scarcely seven songs, what can leave some shy lack. However all art here remains in the same, good level, which we are accustomed. Without bigger changes the band serves nice death/doom tunes with influences of gothic and folk, but it can have impression, that music is darker and grim. Vocally we’ll observe also more determinated elements of black as never before.
Just right in the first title ‘Tunnels’ it sees clearly the difference. The track begins with calm guitars accompanied by the sound of mysterious wind. Then enters the bass, which seems to be a cover of some black construction encircling us. We follow the melody between delicate vocals as suddenly appears savage death growl and the low tones of bass grows up by the question of strong, electric guitars. The listener could to think that he’s really of some kind of dark tunnel with terrible black walls limited to him, where the only one way out is to go ahead, front.
Second track called ‘Cruel Grey Skies’ expresses very deeply sad emotions: grievous tunes, drilling the bleeding wound somewhere inside of our hearts and full of pretension, almost whining, vocal of Ian Arkley. Inside of the track we meet black scream as well. Instead in the short, instrumental ‘Pendulum’ appears folk or medieval’s smacks. Delicate, sweet melody of mandolin and clarinet collaborates with warm acoustic guitars; and all these sounds assists tambourine.
Next two songs ‘By My Own Hand’ and ‘Fall Of The Flightless’ are made in the typical death/doom style: beautiful combination of low, rhythm guitars and of course pretty vocal’s mix. On the album the listener will find also peaceful, atmospheric ballad ‘Fallen Leaves’ with hush voice of Ian on the acoustic panorama with cello and classic guitars. The title ‘Wilderness Of Thorns’, which closes the record, surely will enjoy many fans. The listener can explore here interesting sounds. The track is full of wonderful melodies. Just brings to excitation. On the first plan moves forward the fantastic tones of organs, which didn’t so clear in the previous songs. Good tempo of the drums and great guitar’s riffs create incredible landscape. Finally exactly here we touch the true potency of My Silent Wake. Discover many surprised solutions. With black scream (which here is really strong !), the melody remembers sometimes (with astonishment!) the album “Martyrium” of norwegian Antestor.
Lyrically the record is darker too. Consider depressed, full of grief periods from the life of every human. Describe profound sorrow: “From the open fields they beckon us / Tunnels/As the rains fall down they cover us / (…) How can I ever feel the sun again? / Never ending the walls of fear and decay / Far behind I can still hear the rain / Circle of light still draws me away.”
By the way the texts don’t treat directly about christianity, we find there hope, encouragement to searching, follow the light: “Leave behind all your tears / All your hate / All your desolation / Drift upon open seas / Distant shores rise for three / For you, for your salvation.”
For the conclusion Ian wrote also some words, where we properly see anti-suicide attitude: "(…) It is important to consider that change will come, and it is not always for the worst… good as well as bad can come out of the blue. There is light at the end of the tunnel even if it takes months, even years to walk through it.”
