NOMAD SON  "First Light"

Ottimo esordio per i maltesi Nomad Son, che con “First Light” danno vita ad un assalto doom metal decisamente improntato a sonorità anni ’80, mai prolisso o eccessivamente dilatato.
Il risultato di questa scelta compositiva propone sette ottime composizioni sempre zampettanti e vivaci più un’intro di alcuni minuti (‘Delirium’) che nulla aggiunge o toglie complessivamente al prodotto.
Segnaliamo come nel CD sia presente il bassista Albert Bell, già conosciuto per la sua militanza dei noti Forsaken e nei criptici thrashers Vandals, con cui realizzò un DemoMCD. Rispetto alla sua band principale, i Forsaken (all’attivo quattro album ed un mini), che decisamente hanno come piatto forte un doom cadenzatissimo e non di facilissimo ascolto, i Nomad Son propongono un sound (sempre doom metal) più diretto e d’impatto, che piacerà maggiormente a chi ama il metal fatto di cavalcate e inserimenti di melodie schiette e di non difficile assimilazione.
Tornando a “First Light” notiamo come il primo pezzo sia un vero assalto come ‘Forever Twilight’, un’ottimo mix fra il doom dei Candlemass e le chitarre in stille Maiden.
La successiva track ‘Shallow Grave’ è invece un chiarissimo tuffo negli anni ’70, con l’esaltazione dell’hard rock-doomeggiante inventato dai Black Sabbath, ben realizzato grazie all’intervento dell’organo suonato da Julian Grech. Quest’ultimo rappresenta davvero l’arma in più della band e i suoi inserimenti, mai eccessivamente sottolineati, rappresentano sempre una ricchezza compositiva che dona alla composizione un tocco melodico e oscuro inaspettato.
Con ‘Seven Notes In Black’ arriviamo invece a uno dei brani più clautrofobici e cupi del disco; la voce soffusa e fatta di sospiri di Jordan Cutajar, unita alla rare schitarrate di Chris Grach, sanno ben interpretare il mood del pezzo, che ha ancora negli inserti di tastiera/organo il classico pezzo da novanta (da sottolineare in questo senso l’apertura melodica creata proprio dalle tastiere a metà brano).
Il lato christian dei nostri emerge soprattutto in brani come la cavalcata ‘At The Thresholds Of Consciousness’ in cui Jordan canta, colmo di disperazione, richiedendo l’aiuto di Dio: “My senses are numb, my blood runs cold / I beg thee Lord; keep my soul unto your fold.”
Altro riferimento abbastanza preciso si ha nella lenta conclusiva ‘The Light At The End’, in cui si sottolinea come alla fine del viaggio vi sia la speranza: “Reborn through deliverance / Luminscent in His Glory / May your splendor glow / Forever, eternally.”
Negli altri brani i riferimenti cristiani sono più indiretti e i testi, a tratti personali, richiedono una lettura attenta ed un’interpretazione precisa.
Nel complesso quindi “First Light” è un CD che convince e può risultare molto gradevole anche ai non fanatici del genere. Senz’altro da avere.

Excellent exordium for the Nomad Son from Malta, that with “First Light” gave life to an assault doom metal decidedly characterized on 80’s sonorities, never verbose or excessively dilated.
The result of this constituent chose, proposes seven excellent compositions always nice and lively with also an intro of some minutes (‘Delirium’) that nothing adds or takes away altogether to the product.
We signal how in CD is present the bass player Albert Bell , just known for his career in the famous band Forsaken and in the cryptic thrashers Vandals, with whom he realized a DemoCD. In comparison with his main band, Forsaken band (that published till to now 4 albums and a mini lp ) that decidedly plays a cadenced doom style and not easy to listen, the Nomad Son band proposes a sound (always doom metal) more direct and compact , that will likely most of all to all the people that loves the kind of metal made with ridings and inserting of clear melodies and easy to assimilate.
Returning back to “First Light”, we can notice how the first piece is a real assault like ‘Forever Twilight’ an excellent mix between Candlemass’ doom and the Maiden guitar style.
The following track ‘Shallow Grave’ is instead a clear dive in 70’s , with the exaltation of the doom - hard rock style invented by Black Sabbath band, well realized thanks to the intervention of the organ played by Julian Grech. The last one represents really the weapon useful for the band and his kind of playing, never excessively underlined, represents a constituent richness that donates to the composition a melodic touch and a unexpected.
With ‘Seven Notes In Black’ we arrive to one of the most claustrophobic songs and darkest of the disc; the suffuse voice and made with the breaths of Jordan Cutajar, united to the rare strumming of guitar of Chris Grach, they know well interpreting the mood of the piece, that has yet in the inserts of keyboard/organ the classic top piece (I should underline in this sense the melodic opening created typically by the keyboards in the middle of the song).
The christian side of this band emrges above all in the songs like the riding song ‘At The Thresholds Of Consciousness’ in which Jordan sings, full of desperation, asking the help of God : “My senses are numb, my blood runs cold / I beg thee Lord; keep my soul unto your fold.”
Another referring enough precise is in the slow conclusive ‘The Light At The End’ in which it has underlined how at the end of the travel there is the hope : “Reborn through deliverance / Luminscent in His Glory / May your splendor glow / Forever, eternally.”
In the other songs the christian references are more indirect and the lyrics, sometimes personal, they need an attentive reading and a precise interpretation.
In the whole afterwards “First Light” is a CD that convinces and it can result very pleasant also the not fanatic of this genre. Without doubts you should buy it.
