SEVENTH ANGEL  "The Dust Of Years"

Di quanti anni ha bisogno una band per tornare in grande stile? Nel caso degli inglesi Seventh Angel sono stati necessari circa quindici anni. Ian Arkley, dopo tutto questo lungo periodo, durante il quale ha fatto parte di altri importanti progetti, ha ritrovato la forza per far rivivere il suo vecchio gruppo e di rilanciarlo. Questo è avvenuto grazie all’aiuto dei vecchi membri della sua band, che hanno vissuto diverse esperienze musicali; le storie differenti dei musicisti coinvolti contribuiscono a ottenere un suono particolare e un mix di stili diversi, che senza dubbio costituisce una delle maggiori risorse dell’album.
Il full-length album intitolato “The Dust Of Years” contiene nove canzoni con radici di thrash, death, doom, ambient e anche rock alternativo.
Già solo la prima canzone ‘Chaos Of Dreams’, ci dà un assaggio esemplare di come potranno apparire le restanti canzoni dell’album. Nella canzone seguente ‘The Turning Tide’ vi sono delle melodie malinconiche ma non prive di forza vitale ed energia. I bassi, supportati da un buon lavoro delle percussioni, ci ricordano il ticchettio degli orologi; nella nostra mente ci appare il movimento delle lancette che teniamo al polso e ci trasmette una chiara sensazione di ansia. La musica combacia perfettamente con il testo, che ci dice di non guardarci indietro e di non considerare troppo il passato. Dovremmo concentrarci a vivere nel miglior modo possibile, anche se dobbiamo affrontare molti dubbi o situazioni complicate. Non possiamo sprecare le nostre vite nell’oscurità perché ci porteranno solo a del dolore che non vogliamo: ”The tide spares no-one / Time cares for no-one / (...) / No more looking back / Life will not wait for us / This well beaten track / Unfolds again / (...) / The ticking clocks will never wait / Searching for answers that come too late / The wasted moments in the dark / The tears, the scars, the broken hearts.”
In parecchie canzoni la linea vocale è davvero emozionante. Si propone spesso in una sovrapposizione tra il growl di Ian e la voce pulita di Simon. Nelle prime strofe di ‘Exordium’ questa cooperazione sembra quasi la voce di un arcangelo che la fine del mondo.
Possiamo provare un'emozione incredibile anche quando queste due voci sono separate. Un altro esempio come questo lo troveremo nelle canzoni ‘Weep Not For Us’, ‘The Raven Sky’ e ‘Lamentations’, dove il nostro cuore è diviso in due parti, da una parte investito dall'intenso e brioso colore del growl e dall’altra parte dalla voce pulita e piena di pretese. Specialmente quest’ultima traccia è interessante; in alcuni momenti Simon e Ian cantano alternandosi tra loro, uno dopo l’altro, e questo mix ci ricorda una sorta di litania. Poi indimenticabile è il versetto: "If I lose my way, mourn my birth,” cantato con profonda passione.
Anche dal punto di vista musicale ‘Lamentation’ merita di essere ascoltato. Qui emerge anche la personalità del basso di Mark Broomhead; in seguito ci imbattiamo in buoni riff di chitarra e cambi di tempo. Un buon lavoro ha fatto anche il batterista Tank, che ha messo un po’ di calore nella canzone.
Uno dei pezzi più particolari è ‘Oswiecim’, che richiama la storia del campo di concentramento di Auschwitz-Birkenau, situato in Polonia nei pressi della città di Oswiecim. Il testo rende onore e ricorda un poco tutte le persone morte in quel luogo tragico: "I will not forget your name / I will not forget what happened to you / I will not forget a sky without birds / Graves without earth / Tears without words.”
Musicalmente la composizione ha un sapore acustico. Calme e delicate, le chitarre paiono portar conforto. In questo brano come ospite troveremo a recitare Peter Spencer.
In conclusione i Seventh Angel sono tornati con un eccellente lavoro. L’album “The Dust Of Years” è un bellissimo esempio di un gustoso frutto di ricerche artistiche. E’ stato un bene aspettare quindici anni per poter gustare queste nuove track che vi affascineranno e vi incanteranno. Tutti i fan di gruppi come Celtic Frost, My Dying Bride o i cristiani Vengeance Rising e My Silent Wake non rimarranno delusi.

How many years need a band to return in really great style? In the case of english Seventh Angel are sufficient over 15 years. Ian Arkley after all this long period, in which was a part of other important projects, has found some strength within to revive his almost antique group and make it to stand up on own feet after rebirth. With the help of old but fresh crew with differnet experiences in the music, only developed during the passing years for better and better, he managed to get particular sound and the mix of many styles, which undouptedly are one of the strongest assets on the album.
The full-length titled "The Dust Of Years” contains nine tracks with roots of thrash, death, doom also alternative rock, ambient. Just the first ‘Chaos Of Dreams’ inform us how will look the face of new compositions. Primarilly nice collaboration of guitars and vocals. In following piece ‘The Turning Tide’ we have gloomy melancholic melodies but not devoid the energy and vital force.
The low guitars on the percusion’s background remember ticking clocks; before the eyes appears imagine of the motion the clock’s hands, which call us to hurry and leave some sensation of anxiety. The music perfectly placed the text, where is the a reason do not turn our face behind for ponder too much the past. Time is running, nothing will turn it back.
We should concentrate to live as better as we can, also if we have to face many complicated situations or doubts. We can’t waste our lifes in blackness because it will bring us only to unwanted pain: "The tide spares no-one / Time cares for no-one / (...) / No more looking back / Life will not wait for us / This well beaten track / Unfolds again / (...) / The ticking clocks will never wait / Searching for answers that come too late / The wasted moments in the dark / The tears, the scars, the broken hearts.”
In many songs very impressive is the vocal part. It means overlapping growl of Ian and Simon’s clean vocal. In the first strophes of ‘Exordium’ this cooperatrion seems to be a voice of archangel, annonuncing the end of the times, earth. Incredibile emotion we exeprience also when these two vocals are separated. Another example we’ll find in ‘Weep Not For Us’, ‘The Raven Sky’ and 'Lamentations’, where our heart is teared apart doubly by very severe, spirited color of growl and from second hand by the clean vocal full of pretences, in which is something impenetrable.
Especially this last one track is interesting; in some moment Simon and Ian sing alternately, one after another, and it remembers a little some litany. Then unforgettable is the verse: "If I lose my way, mourn my birth” sang with so profound passion. Also from musical side ‘Lamentation’ is worth to see. We feel nearer the presence Mark Broomhead’s bass guitar; then we have here a good bit of rich riffs, the changes of tempo. Nice work made drummer Tank, who put into the song some warmth.
One of the particular pieces is ‘Oswiecim’, which invokes to the history of concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau situated in Poland in the city Oswiecim. The lyric is some kind of honour, short rememberance dedicated to memory all the persons died there: "I will not forget your name / I will not forget what happened to you / I will not forget a sky without birds / Graves without earth / Tears without words.”
Musically this composition is very acoustic. Calm, delicate guitars seems to want to bring comfort. We’ll find here guest recitation of Peter Spencer; then in the middle of the track appears curious, hipnotic ambient’s variation.
Seventh Angel are backing with excellent charm, that we can’t even immagine. Album „The Dust Of Years” is a beautiful example of tasty fruit of artist’s researches. It can compare also with wine: the older the better. It was worth to wait this over 15 years to make it taste. The music certainly fascinates and enchants. All fans of such climates like Celtic Frost, My Dying Bride or Vengenace Rising, My Silent Wake shouldn’t be disappointed.
