Dopo un solo anno dall'uscita del primo full length "Preaching To The Perverted" gli australiani Templar tornano sul mercato con un nuovo lavoro che si presenta ancora, almeno a livello di immagine e attitudine, come un prodotto perfetto ed accattivante per il mercato legato al sound electro e gothic; in realtà anche per questa occasione i nostri dimostrano di avere, a livello compositivo, le radici ben piantate nel terreno del metal più tradizionale.
"Dark Circus" inizia con una breve intro che attacca i mass media, "Media Whore", per poi aprirsi con la titletrack, che presenta un attacco feroce al "circo nero" dell'informazione e del mondo in cui viviamo, nel quale non viene risparmiato il papa, raffigurato con un'oscura caricatura (evidentemente i Templar, chiaramente protestanti, non sono purtroppo fautori di un'idea di ecumenismo...).
Questo primo pezzo propone alcune delle rare comparse di sound che potremmo attribuire all'ambito elettronico, come del resto la ripresa della stessa song che possiamo ascoltare in fondo al CD.
Continuando ad affrontare la tracklist ci imbattiamo in 'Institution', brano che ci fa conoscere il lato decisamente irriverente e ribelle verso le istituzioni dei nostri; a livello musicale il pezzo propone i due singer Dan e Toad (lead vocalist) alle prese con linee pulite, growl e parti narrate, accompagnati da un sound che potremmo accostare al gothic rock più spinto (per certi versi ci ricordano un poco i nostrani Death SS dell'ultimo periodo).
Ma già la track successiva, 'Black Scar', ci fa capire come le coordinate musicali dei nostri siano ben salde nel metal più tosto, grazie ad un riffing serrato ed aggressivo, che ci ricorda alcune cose dei Pantera, nonchè una prova energica alla batteria di Symon, che, oltre ad essere preciso, contribuisce ad arricchire tutti i pezzi; il coro del brano si apre in una melodia inaspettata ma pienamente riuscita. Da sottolineare infine come le linee vocali del brano siano tutte leggermente filtrate.
Con la successiva track 'Apostates Regret' cambiamo ancora i connotati di una proposta che presenta in questo caso il sapore di un groove-rock-metal in stile Rob Zombie, ma con un occhio sempre alla melodia.
Il prosequio del CD propone ancora differenti facce degli stili descritti; se quindi 'Fatalism' è più rock oriented e decisamente composta per scalare le classifiche, abbiamo poi anche pezzi in stile System Of A Down come la scombussolata 'New Years Revolution' ed ancora il lento 'House Is Burning' o la movimentata 'Greenback Nation', che ci ricordano i WASP più accattivanti e arrembanti.
A livello di testi i nostri dimostrano di attaccare con una certa ferocia alcuni dei mali che per un cristiano sono presenti nella società odierna, accompagnando nel booklet del CD delle illustrazioni efficaci per ogni song. Un esempio è 'Fatalism' che punta il dito sulla piaga dell'aborto, o ancora 'Greenback Nation', che se la prende con la corruzione delle banche e la schiavitù che impongono alla gente comune.
In conclusione i Templar sono vicini all'ambito darkwave, elettronico soprattutto per l'immagine scelta, fatta di trucchi pesanti e artwork che decisamente non sembrano andare d'accordo con l'approccio cristiano delle liriche (vedi la donnina in copertina del CD che ricorda immagini irriverenti di band che sicuramente sono distanti anni luce dal cristianesimo). Al contrario a livello musicale, nonostante i diversi episodi sperimentali, i nostri dimostrano ancora una volta di avere solide basi nel metal classico.
Disco per chi non si accontenta di gruppi prevedibili.

“Preaching To The Perverted” is the Templar’s first full length album, australian band that debuts after an EP in 2006, “Wirch Hunt”, and a demo in 2007. The band is born like a part and side project of Paradoxx and for this reason it was right to wait for a sound really particular.
In reality, unless the digipack cover (that represents a girl dressed up similarity to a dark style) and the cover picture representing the artists of Templar (with a heavy make-up and dyed hair), the CD is a heavy metal project, for the most present tracks.
It’s not a case in fact, if after the introduction of almost three minutes titled ‘Preaching To The Perverted (Part 1)’ (a lot of decadent atmosphere and a beautiful guitar solo… but in reality a boring and useless track) we come to ‘Warlord’, opening track of a good classic metal in which we can find like lead vocalist Josh Kramer, the singer of Saint, icon of the american christian heavy metal. In reality the piece is not memorable but Josh sings also in ‘Sky Spider’, song supported by a robust riff of guitar and precise stop-and-go of battery (thanks to Timothy) that sustains greatly the vowel lines of the Saint’s singer.
Another good piece is ‘Desolator’, this time sung by the official singer Daniel (that seems a mixe between Dee Snider and Blackie Lawless); the piece is based on an impudent groove and hard rock oriented that makes it irreverent and able to conquer the listener since the first listening.
Certainly it’s possible also noticing some elements of industrial, gothic or dark, as the case of thetrack ‘Welcome To The Breakdown’, but also in this case the experimentation has suddenly deleted by a classic solo of guitar thanks to the good Rafael.
Another good piece of CDis the conclusive track ‘With Hunt’, where we find together to the lead vocals the singer of Paradoxx Phoenix Taylor and at the chorus Ed Gomez of the Swedish band Jet Circus. For obvious reasons the piece is coloured with decadent ad trailing hard rock hues, with a perfect refrain that kicks directly to the heart.
Unfortunately not all the CD tracks remain on high levels and the tension falls irremediably in the case of confused pieces like ‘Alchemist’ or boring like the slow ‘Breathe’, that reduce the overall value of the album.
Templar express themselves in the lyric in a corrosive way, with critics to the religion that is considered like an enemy of the relation with Christ, but also to the recalls to address to the Lord.
Certainly “Preaching To The Perverted” is a surprise album that deserves a listening for the classic metal lovers and for the lovers of a sound darker and gothic.
