TEMPLAR  "Preaching To The Perverted"

"Preaching To The Perverted" è il primo full length dei Templar, band australiana che giunge al debutto dopo un EP del 2006, "Witch Hunt", ed un demo del 2007. Il gruppo nasce come costola e side project dei Paradoxx e per questo motivo era possibile aspettarsi un sound davvero particolare. In realtà, nonostante la copertina del digipack (che raffigura una ragazza vestita e agghindata in simil dark style) e foto di copertina dei tre artisti che compongono i Templar (raffigurati con trucco pesante e capelli tinti), il CD è, per la stragrande maggioranza delle track presenti, un lavoro di heavy metal, nè più nè meno.
Non è un caso infatti, se dopo l'introduzione di quasi tre minuti intitolata 'Preaching To The Perverted (Part 1)' (tanta atmosfera decadente ed un bell'assolo di chitarra... ma a conti fatti una traccia noiosa ed inutile) arriviamo a 'Warlord', pezzo d'apertura di buon metallone classico in cui troviamo alle lead vocal nientepopòdimenoche Josh Kramer, il singer dei grandi Saint, icona dell'heavy metal cristiano a stelle e strisce. A dir la verità il pezzo non è memorabile ma Josh canta anche in 'Sky Spider', brano supportato da una robusto riffing di chitarra e da precisi stop-and-go di batteria (ad opera di Timothy) che sostengono alla grande le linee vocali del singer dei Saint.
Altro pezzo riuscito è 'Desolator', questa volta cantato dall'ugola più cartavetrata del singer ufficiale Daniel (che sembra una via di mezzo fra Dee Snider e Blackie Lawless); il pezzo si incasella in un groove spudorato e hard rock-oriented che lo rende irreverente e in grado di conquistare sin dal primo ascolto.
Certamente qualche accenno industrial, gothic o dark quà e là è possibile che esca allo scoperto, come nel caso della traccia 'Welcome To The Breakdown', ma anche in questo caso la sperimentazione viene subito cancellata da un classico assolo di chitarra ad opera del bravo Rafael.
Altro pezzo da novanta del CD è la conclusiva 'With Hunt', dove troviamo alle lead vocal il singer dei Paradoxx Phoenix Taylor ed ai cori Ed Gomez degli svedesi Jet Circus. Per ovvi motivi il pezzo si colora di tinte hard rock decadenti e strascicate, con un refrain cantato alla perfezione che colpisce dritto al ventre.
Purtroppo non tutti i brani del CD rimangono su livelli alti e la tensione cade irrimediabilmente nel caso di pezzi confusi come 'Alchemist' o noiosi come l'insulso lento 'Breathe', che ridimensionano la valutazione complessiva dell'opera.
I Templar si esprimono nei testi in modo corrosivo, con critiche per la religione che viene vista come un nemico del rapporto con Cristo, ma anche con richiami a rivolgersi al Signore.
Di certo "Preaching To The Perverted" è un album sorpresa che merita un ascolto sia per chi ama il metal classico sia per chi adora un sound più dark e gothic.

“Preaching To The Perverted” is the Templar’s first full length album, australian band that debuts after an EP in 2006, “Wirch Hunt”, and a demo in 2007. The band is born like a part and side project of Paradoxx and for this reason it was right to wait for a sound really particular.
In reality, unless the digipack cover (that represents a girl dressed up similarity to a dark style) and the cover picture representing the artists of Templar (with a heavy make-up and dyed hair), the CD is a heavy metal project, for the most present tracks.
It’s not a case in fact, if after the introduction of almost three minutes titled ‘Preaching To The Perverted (Part 1)’ (a lot of decadent atmosphere and a beautiful guitar solo… but in reality a boring and useless track) we come to ‘Warlord’, opening track of a good classic metal in which we can find like lead vocalist Josh Kramer, the singer of Saint, icon of the american christian heavy metal. In reality the piece is not memorable but Josh sings also in ‘Sky Spider’, song supported by a robust riff of guitar and precise stop-and-go of battery (thanks to Timothy) that sustains greatly the vowel lines of the Saint’s singer.
Another good piece is ‘Desolator’, this time sung by the official singer Daniel (that seems a mixe between Dee Snider and Blackie Lawless); the piece is based on an impudent groove and hard rock oriented that makes it irreverent and able to conquer the listener since the first listening.
Certainly it’s possible also noticing some elements of industrial, gothic or dark, as the case of thetrack ‘Welcome To The Breakdown’, but also in this case the experimentation has suddenly deleted by a classic solo of guitar thanks to the good Rafael.
Another good piece of CDis the conclusive track ‘With Hunt’, where we find together to the lead vocals the singer of Paradoxx Phoenix Taylor and at the chorus Ed Gomez of the Swedish band Jet Circus. For obvious reasons the piece is coloured with decadent ad trailing hard rock hues, with a perfect refrain that kicks directly to the heart.
Unfortunately not all the CD tracks remain on high levels and the tension falls irremediably in the case of confused pieces like ‘Alchemist’ or boring like the slow ‘Breathe’, that reduce the overall value of the album.
Templar express themselves in the lyric in a corrosive way, with critics to the religion that is considered like an enemy of the relation with Christ, but also to the recalls to address to the Lord.
Certainly “Preaching To The Perverted” is a surprise album that deserves a listening for the classic metal lovers and for the lovers of a sound darker and gothic.
