Primo capitolo della trilogia “Requiem” presentata dai gothic metaller Virgin Black, prodotta dalla The End Records in collaborazione con Massacre Records, che vedrà il suo sviluppo nel 2008, con l’uscita separata degli altri due album, “Requiem – Fortissimo” e “Requiem – Pianissimo”.
Con questo progetto, l’intento della band australiana è quello di realizzare un vero e proprio requiem attraverso la release di tre dischi, dove “Requiem – Pianissimo” rappresenta la parte più tranquilla con componenti orchestrali e sinfonici, “Requiem – Fortissimo” mostra il lato più aggressivo ed estremo, infine il lavoro in questione, dovrebbe simboleggiare la via di mezzo tra la melodia e la violenza sonora. Inoltre, la decisione di lanciare prima questo CD molto probabilmente è stata dovuta a scelte concettuali legate al tema proposto, ma soprattutto ad una forte attinenza con quanto fatto precedentemente.
Apre le danze magniloquenti la bellissima ed affascinante ‘Requiem, Kyrie’, introdotta magistralmente da orchestrazioni classiche e da cori gotici fortemente malinconici, che poi sfociano in un chorus stupendo e parecchio pomposo.
Il successivo episodio, ‘In Death’, ripercorre in maniera forte e netta campi già esplorati in passato, per mezzo di atmosfere decadenti e con improvvisi cambi di tempo e un’alternarsi sincopato di stati d’animo. Anche qui onnipresenti, in quasi tutta la durata della song, le tante sperimentazioni orchestrali, vocalizzi sepolcrali e arpeggi violinistici, che rendono il brano quasi apocalittico nel suo incedere marziale.
Il testo, inoltre, evidenzia la stretta appartenenza del gruppo alla fede cristiana, che passa anche per alcuni aspetti della vita quali la sofferenza, il dolore e la morte: “O misery you live / I have been struck and am suffering / O misery you live / You take bread from hands / That hold so little / And show treason to a faithful heart / There is no healing balm of reason / O wretchedness, O misery / Fall upon mercy / Set thy altar here / Lifeless life cradles lifeless death / Set thy altar here / Fall upon mercy / O wretchedness, O misery / O misery you live / I have been struck and am suffering / O misery you live in death / Exaudi orationem (meam) / Quantus tremor est futurus / Exaudi orationem (meam)”.
La terza traccia in lista è ‘Midnight’s Hymn’, versione rivisitata di ‘Drink The Midnight Hymn’ presente in “Sombre Romantic”, album che ha segnato una svolta importante nella carriera della “vergine nera”. Rispetto alla canzone originale, in questa reinterpretazione vi è una maggiore attenzione per gli arrangiamenti e per le variegate influenze che vanno dal doom al black metal, che diventano sempre più portanti e fondamentali nel sound.
Il passo seguente è la lunga e oscura ‘…And I Am Suffering’, prima delle due suite lunghe dieci minuti e più che compongono “Requiem – Mezzo forte”. Questo capitolo, pur avendo al proprio interno tantissime variazioni e derivazioni risulta a tratti noioso e troppo complicato da comprendere, soprattutto per chi non è abituato all’ascolto, per mezzo di un ritmo fortemente ridondante che ricorda parecchio i Candlemass e i My Dying Bride.
Il gothic puro viene, così, fuori con la bellissima e geniale ‘Domine’, piena di angoscia ma allo stesso tempo di aspetti spirituali e divini che vengono esplicitati soprattutto nella parte lirica, attraverso un testo, con alcune parole latine, che è lo specchio del pensiero di London e soci: “Dies illa, dies irae / Dies illa, dies irae / The hour is at... / Loss and grief in chorus / Chime forth their cantiche / Loss and grief / Dies illa, dies irae / The hour is at hand / Sorrow ever awaits on joy, Domine / Sorrow ever awaits on joy / Judgement is at hand / All flesh is barren / All souls subject / Quantus tremor est futurus / Quantus tremor / Judgement is at hand / Requiem / Domine”.
Protagonista indiscusso della canzone è il leader-compositore Rowan London, che domina assolutamente la scena con i suoi cantanti alternati growl-puliti e mostra tutta la sua immensa creatività in uno degli episodi più azzeccati del disco.
Inserti operistici introducono, invece, l’altra lunga traccia, ‘Lacrimosa (I Am Blind With Weeping)’, dove riff di chitarra pesanti, sinfonie violinistiche e assoli fanno da cornice ad imponenti cori e a duetti tra London e la cantante lirica Susan Johnson, ormai ospite fissa nei lavori della gothic band.
Chiude l’EP ‘Rest Eternal’, una sorta di preghiera rivolta a Dio per avere l’eterno riposo, che riprende il motivo principale di ‘Requiem, Kyrie’, apertura dell’album.
Questa trilogia si presenta al pubblico, dunque, nel migliori dei modi, con un discreto CD degno del nome Virgin Black che sicuramente non scontenterà fans e amanti di dischi operistici.
Tuttavia, prima di dare un giudizio finale, è lecito aspettare l’uscita degli altri due lavori per avere un’idea complessiva. Una cosa è certa, i Virgin Black si impongono nuovamente come una realtà ormai ben consolidata nella scena christian metal mondiale.

This is the first chapter of the trilogy "Requiem" presented by the gothic metaller Virgin Black, produced by The End Records in collaboration with Massacre Records, that saw its development in 2008, with other two albums : “Requiem – Fortissimo” and “Requiem – Pianissimo”.
With this project, the intention of the Australian band was to realize a real requiem through the release of three albums. "Requiem - Pianissimo" represents the part more peaceful with orchestral and symphonic components and “Requiem – Fortissimo” shows the part more aggressive and extreme. Instead this production “Requiem – Mezzo Forte”should represent the middle way between the melody and the violent sound. Probably the decision to show at the first this CD was due to conceptual choices in relation with the proposal theme, but above all to a strong relation with the previous production.
The dances are opened by the charming and beautiful ‘Requiem, Kyrie’ introduced by classic orchestrations and gothic chorus strongly melancholy, that then flow into a wonderful and pompous chorus.
The following episode, 'In Death' , repeats in a strong manner and evident fields just explored in the past, through decadent atmospheres, and with sudden changes of time, and alternated emotions. Also here, the experimental orchestrations are always present, along all the song, with sepulchral voices and arpeggios with violins, that make the song almost apocalyptic during its execution
The lyric then evidences the tight belonging of the band to the Christian faith , which passes also through some aspects of the life like the suffering, the pain and the death: “O misery you live / I have been struck and am suffering / O misery you live / You take bread from hands / That hold so little / And show treason to a faithful heart / There is no healing balm of reason / O wretchedness, O misery / Fall upon mercy / Set thy altar here / Lifeless life cradles lifeless death / Set thy altar here / Fall upon mercy / O wretchedness, O misery / O misery you live / I have been struck and am suffering / O misery you live in death / Exaudi orationem (meam) / Quantus tremor est futurus / Exaudi orationem (meam)”.
The third track in list is 'Midnight's Hymn', revisited version of ‘Drink The Midnight Hymn’ that we can find in “Sombre Romantic”, album that just signed an important changing in the career of "black virgin". Comparing it to the original song, in this reinterpretation there a more accurate attention for the arrangements and for the different influences that go from doom to black metal, which become more and more load-bearing and important in the sound.
The following passage is the long and dark ‘…And I Am Suffering’ , the first one of the two suites long more than 10 minutes that are a part of “Requiem – Mezzo forte”.
This chapter, despite it has inside a lot of variations and derivations, it results sometimes boring and too much complicated to understand, above all for the people that isn't accustomed to this kind of listen, through an abounding rhythm that remembers enough the bands Candlemass and My Dying Bride.
The pure Gothic comes so out with the wonderful and genial 'Domine', full of anguish but in the same time full of spiritual aspects ad divines, that are explicit above all in the lyrical side, through a lyric, with some Latin words, that is the mirror of the thought of London and company : “Dies illa, dies irae / Dies illa, dies irae / The hour is at... / Loss and grief in chorus / Chime forth their cantiche / Loss and grief / Dies illa, dies irae / The hour is at hand / Sorrow ever awaits on joy, Domine / Sorrow ever awaits on joy / Judgement is at hand / All flesh is barren / All souls subject / Quantus tremor est futurus / Quantus tremor / Judgement is at hand / Requiem / Domine”.
The protagonist of the song is the leader-composer Rowan London who dominates absolutely the scene with his voice alternating a clean voice with growl and it shows his immense creativity in one of the most right episodes of the disc.
Lyrical inserts introduce, instead, the other long track, 'Lacrimosa (I Am Blind With Weeping)', where riffs of heavy guitar, violin symphonies and solos are like a frame to big chorus and duets between London and the lyrical singer Susan Johnson, at least fixed guest in the works of the Gothic band.
'Rest Eternal' closes the CD , a sort of pray toward to God to have the eternal rest, which retakes the principal theme of 'Requiem, Kyrie', opening of the album.
This trilogy shows itself to the public , so , in the best of ways, with a discrete CD , worth of the name Virgin Black that surely won't make unhappy the fans and the lovers of lyrical discs.
However, before giving a final response, it's right waiting for the other two production to have a general idea. A thing is sure, Virgin Black, shows themselves again like a reality at least well consolidated in the world scene of christian metal.
