12 Giugno 2007: Ecco il giorno del rilascio del CD debutto "Conquering The Fear Of Flight" dei Wavorly, un gruppo proveniente da Tupelo, Mississippi, che sembra avere origini molto particolari. Infatti questa band, sarebbe nata inizialmente sotto il nome di Freshmen 15 in un college, dove Lott e David Stovall si unirono al batterista Jaime Hayes per poi completare il gruppo con il chitarrista Seth Farmer e il tastierista Ryan Coon per poi cambiare nel nome attuale. In un’intervista, il cantante Lott, ha rivelato che hanno scelto Wavorly come nome finale, affinchè la gente, vedendo questo nome, potesse capire il riferimento alla guerra civile avvenuta nel Mississippi che aveva proprio questo nome e fare quindi un collegamento al loro paese. Beh, dubito che qui in italia molti sianoriusciti a fare quest’associazione, ma è sempre buono saperne di più sugli artisti che esaminiamo, anche perché molto spesso la biografia di una band incide molto sullo stile musicale che la band adotterà. Bando alle ciance, iniziamo ad esaminare più attentamente questo album.
Tra i produttori e autori delle canzoni vediamo comparire due nomi conosciuti nel campo della musica cristiana. Infatti il produttore del CD è Rob Graves, che ha lavorato anche al debutto dei Red; inoltre alcune canzoni sono state scritte da Trevor dei Thousand Foot Krutch. Questo ci prepara a capire il livello di questo album.
Forse non è un gruppo di gran fama (per lo meno non ancora), ma giustamente questo è il loro primo CD e come primo album non è affatto male. Quindi possiamo partire dal punto forte di questi statunitensi: le lyrics.
A quanto pare i Wavorly vogliono trasmetterci un forte messaggio con i testi delle loro canzoni, non a caso tutte le song di questo debutto contengono testi profondi e sulla quale si può riflettere parecchio, come riferimenti contro questa cultura consumistica e priva di valori. Non dobbiamo scordare però, dopo le denunce, i messaggi di lode e le storie usate dalla band per parlare di Dio, infatti l’intero album sembrerebbe un intera metafora, se escludiamo ‘Praise And Adore (Some Live Without It)’ e ‘Forgive And Forget’ in cui ci sono messaggi chiari ed espliciti verso Dio: “So I praise and adore you / In every way way You’re beautiful from my heart / made the world beautiful / And I can’t sit and deny you created life / How could I choose not to forgive when everything you choose to forgive? / and still we will be loved”.
Ma esclusi questi messaggi diretti, due tracce sembrerebbero addirittura essere ispirate ad un libro di C.S. Lewis, di cui Lott afferma “Il punto principale di quel libro, è che non puoi avere un po’ di inferno dentro te e andare nel paradiso, ne avere un po’ di paradiso dentro di te e andare all’inferno.”
Infatti, nella canzone 'Part One', i testi raccontano del protagonista che prende la strada per l’inferno, in 'Endless Days', il protagonista prende la strada per il paradiso. La canzone ‘The Defeat’, inoltre, sembrerebbe una metafora della venuta di Gesù nel mondo per salvare la sua sposa. Questo può essere causa del fatto che i Wavorly non avendo nessuna fretta di rilasciare questo cd in tempi prematuri e si sono presi tutto il tempo necessario per studiare e selezionare dei testi adatti e comunicativi, che avvolte devono essere decifrati per essere compresi nella loro completezza.
Se nel totale possiamo dire che nei testi ci sia qualcosa profondo, non possiamo dire però che ci sia omogeneità anche nella struttura musicale di questo album, anche perché in questo i Wavorly amano variare molto. Ad esempio possiamo dire che l’album si avvia con una suonata classica introduttiva, poi c’è la canzone ‘Summer Song’ che è invece una calma canzone/romanzo acustica mentre in ‘Madmen’, la seconda traccia che sembra quasi collegata all’introduzione, vediamo un ritmo più frenetico ed energico dove si fanno sentire maggiormente le chitarre e la batteria punk roc. Grazie all'originalità dello stile dei Wavorly definire un genere musicale fisso alla band risulta un lavoro molto complicato.
In definitiva, possiamo definire quest’album con tre aggettivi chiave: profondo, energico, irrompente.
Per essere "Conquering The Fear Of Flight" la prima produzione ufficiale la band ha fatto davvero un ottimo lavoro, grazie ad un album abbastanza completo, unico nel suo stile e molto comunicativo. Però il cantante Lott, che è anche un uomo di chiesa, sembra non farsi molto impressionare dal successo, come afferma: “Siamo solo una band che vuole conoscere la gente e stabilire una relazione.” Inoltre, dopo alcuni commenti positivi del giornalista risponde: “Quando pensi di essere arrivato, hai ancora molta strada da fare”. Quindi, dopo esserci goduti quest’album possiamo dire di avere alte aspettative anche per il prossimo, che ne dite?

12 June 2007: the debut-day of the CD “Conquering the Fear of Flight”, by the band Wavorly from Tupelo, Mississippi. The origin of the band is quite interesting: the band was born as “Freshmen 15” in the college where Lott and David Stovall joined the drum player Jaime Hayes and later the guitarist Seth Farmer and keyboardist Ryan Coon, then deciding to change their name in the current one. During an interview, the singer Lott explained that they chose the name Wavorly to let the people realize that it refers to the civil war occurred in Mississippi, thus associate the band to their homeland. Even though this name is meaningless for non-USA citizens, it can help sometimes to understand the meaning of lyrics and to know something more about the style.
Among the producers and composers we can identify two well known artists in the christian rock circuit. The producer is Rob Graves, who also created Red’s debut album, and some songs were written by Trevor from Thousand Foot Krutch. This was said to better understand album’s quality.
The band has not reached, of course, an high fame, but this doesn’t means that “Conquering The Fear Of Flight” is an ugly album. Lyrics are the heavyweights of the work; Wavorly want to communicate a strong message with their songs, leading us to deeply think about the ugly consumerism culture and about the lack of real values in the modern society. Besides bands uses to speak about social complaints, laud messages and stories that told about God. The whole album itself seems to be a metaphor, excluding 'Praise and Adore (Some Live Without It)' and 'Forgive and Forget', in which are clearly expressed heavenward messages: "So I praise and adore you / In every way You're beautiful from my heart / made the world beautiful / And I can't sit and deny you created life / How could I choose not to forgive when everything you choose to forgive? / and still we will be loved".
Two of the tracks seem to be inspired by C.S. Lewis’ books, whose Lott relates: “The main argument of that book is that you cannot have hell inside and go to Heaven, nor have heaven inside and go to hell”. In fact the main character of the song 'Part One' is going to take the road to hell, while in 'Endless Day' the protagonist choose to take the road to heaven. The song “The Defeat” is the story of Christ who came to the earth to save his bride. The complex and intense lyrics were composed by Wavorly in a long period, thus resulting in a difficulty for the listener to understand the deep and whole meanings.
The same similarity of lyrics does not lead to homogeneity in the musical arrangements of this album, also because they like to change often: the classic intro is followed by the quiet acoustic song 'Summer Song', while in 'Madmen', the second track tied to the intro, the rhythm is more frenetic and powerful thanks to the more incisive guitars and to the punk rock drum. Because of the extremely various music styles, is almost impossible to catalogue Wavorly in a precise and unique genre.
To summarize we can use only three adjective to define this album: deep, powerful and disruptive. This band made a really good work with this first album, unique and communicative.
The Singer Lott, true christian believer, doesn’t care too much about success: “We are a band who wants to meet people and establish good relationship”, and after nice comments from a pressman: “When you think you reached the top, you have got a long road ahead”. So, let’s wait for the next album!
