Finalmente anche quest’anno giunge il tanto atteso evento christian metal più osannato e accessibile a noi italiani, il festival Elements Of Rock, che compie con questa edizione il suo quinto anno di vita e come di consueto accoglie un vasto pubblico proveniente da ogni parte d’Europa.
Teatro della manifestazione è ancora una volta il bellissimo Stadthofsaal di Uster, cittadina in provincia di Zurigo, che ospita nuovamente il ritrovo cristiano.
Dopo le passate kermesse che hanno visto protagoniste band del calibro di Virgin Black, Rob Rock, Narnia e Balance Of Power, il bill di quest’anno non presenta gruppi eccessivamente rinomati, a parte i pionieri del power cristiano Seventh Avenue reduci del successo dell’ultima fatica “Terium”, ma vi assicuro che la qualità della manifestazione è altrettanto apprezzabile.
Inoltre per gli italianissimi, e soprattutto per un siciliano doc come me, è motivo di grande orgoglio avere in scaletta i siciliani Metatrone, unici rappresentanti di fede cattolica, insieme ai Kreyson, in mezzo a confessioni evangeliche, calviniste e protestanti: a completare la lista delle band si aggiungono i gothic metaller Monoblock, i deathstar Thy Bleeding Skies, Kreyson, Drottnar ed Exaudi.
La mia prima avventura targata EOR comincia all’aeroporto di Catania con i miei amici e compagni di viaggio Metatrone, un po’ assonnacchiato dalla mattinata ma pronto per questa esperienza spirituale oltre che musicale. Atterrati a Milano Linate, dopo un’oretta di ritardo ormai usuale nelle linee aeree della Wind Jet, trovo ad aspettarmi il grande e paziente Leo (caporedattore di HolySteel) con la simpaticissima Monika (Unblacksister) con cui avevo appuntamento, pronti per salire assieme in Svizzera.
Così dopo esserci salutati, presentati per bene e caricati i bagagli in macchina cominciamo finalmente a fare strada alla volta di Uster seguiti dai Metatrone. Dopo una serie di peripezie autostradali, in primis code varie soprattutto al passo del San Gottardo e alla frontiera, arriviamo a destinazione alle 17:30 circa, un po’ stanchi ma carichi per la prima serata.
L’immediata impressione che si ha appena giunti nella location, soprattutto per un novizio come me, è che ci si trova di fronte ad un’ottima organizzazione che ha saputo gestire alla grande un evento così importante da queste parti.
All’interno della struttura, come ormai ogni anno, sono disponibili negli appositi stand realizzati dallo staff e dalle band, tavoli con sedie, zona ristoro e inoltre centinaia di dischi christian metal e magliette di ogni genere a prezzi molto più bassi che in Italia, pronti per essere presi d’assalto dagli irriducibili. Ottima e abbastanza capiente la sala adibita ai concerti, con un palco ben attrezzato, curato e un discreto spazio per il pubblico e per i poghi che si scateneranno in questa due giorni tutta da godere.

ARCANE LEGION
La prima giornata dell’EOR 2008, che offre un antipasto di cinque band, viene aperta puntualmente alle 18:00 dai tedeschi Arcane Legion aggiunti praticamente all’ultimo momento, infatti nel programma ufficiale non figurano neanche nel bill.
La band teutonica, che all’attivo ha un DemoMCD autoprodotto realizzato nel 2006, presenta un heavy/power metal ormai ritrito sulla scia di Hammerfall, Iron Maiden ed Accept, che risulta molto apprezzabile.
Purtroppo come ogni gruppo di apertura, i quattro devono fare i conti con i suoni non perfetti che spesso si contrastano a vicenda, non facendo risaltare la voce e le parti solistiche di chitarra che altrimenti sarebbero apprezzabili. Tra le canzoni spiccano, il brano di apertura ‘Overcome The World’ che ricorda moltissimo gli Hammerfall, ‘Sons Of Thunder’ di matrice maideniana e l’epica ‘Sound Of War’ che a quanto pare sembra essere il cavallo di battaglia del combo tedesco.

L’esibizione scorre abbastanza bene nonostante i citati problemi di sound, complice soprattutto l’ottima energia e la vitalità che sprigionano gli Arcane Legion, e il pubblico sembra gradire ugualmente la performance, in modo particolare quando viene proposta ‘The Clansman’ degli Iron Maiden, cantata a gran voce da tutti.
Peccato per il suono generale che appare troppo poco amalgamato e molto confuso, anche se i quattro hanno cercato di dare il massimo ed essere quanto più coinvolgenti possibili, e in questo lo sono stati senz’altro.

DBEALITY
La musica cambia totalmente con la successiva esibizione dei Dbeality, band americana dedita ad un heavy/doom metal, capitanata dalla figura carismatica del singer David Benson, un clone perfetto di Ozzy Osbourne. La line-up viene completata da musicisti del calibro di CJ Grimmark e Andreas Olsson ormai affermati e conosciuti dai christian fan per la loro militanza nei Narnia e Rob Rock.
Quello che si nota subito sin dal brano di apertura ‘Premonition Of Doom’ è innanzitutto l’elevata caratura tecnica, poi un ottimo sound ben compatto e soprattutto una maggiore esperienza on-stage rispetto al gruppo di apertura.

Le canzoni proposte dal quartetto sono molto vicine alle sonorità di Ozzy Osbourne e Black Label Society con ritmi heavy e cadenze claustrofobiche provenienti direttamente dalla scena doom, e vengono accolte ottimamente dai presenti che rispondono come meglio non potrebbero. Queste sono estrapolate sia dagli album solisti di Benson, sia dal debutto full-lenght targato Dbeality.
Esemplari in questo senso le ottime e trascinanti ‘Crushing The Dark Cathedral’ tratta da un demo del 2001, ‘C.O.S’ e ‘Victory’ dell’ultima fatica discografica e il must ‘Holy Psychotherapy’ che mette maggiormente in risalto la tecnica e la bravura mostruosa del chitarrista Grimmark, un vero guitar hero.
E che dire di Benson? E’ un vero trascinatore e una figura che trasmette tanta tranquillità e serenità anche quando si esibisce on-stage: un vero mito.
Ottima prova, dunque, dei Dbeality che sfornano un ottimo show e intrattengono i christian fan con del sano e puro heavy metal.

DROTTNAR
Dopo lo show dei Dbeality tocca ai black metaller norvegesi Drottnar, con tanto di divisa militare sovietica ormai vero simbolo di riconoscimento, terremotare il pubblico già abbastanza caldo e sbloccato dai concerti precedenti.
Il loro black metal risente moltissimo dell’influsso di Dimmu Borgir e Immortal, ma in generale di tutta la scena nordica estrema. La band ha al proprio attivo un solo album ufficiale, “Welterwek”, del 2006 e due release precedenti, una raccolta e un MCD (2003 e 2000), che però già lasciano intravedere un futuro abbastanza prospero nel panorama black cristiano europeo, basti vedere le date dei concerti successivi, persino in America, per rendersi conto dell’ottimo momento dei Drottnar.
Il concerto parte a mille con la devastante ‘Soul Suburbia’ che mette in evidenza l’ottima bravura dei due chitarristi Karl Fredrik Lind e Bengt Olsson e del velocissimo batterista Glenn-David Lind. Anche se l’attenzione è inevitabilmente rivolta al frontman singer Sven-Erik Lind, un vero animale da palcoscenico, che si presenta con l’ormai celebre megafono che accompagna ogni uscita live della band.

Il sound generale, purtroppo, all’inizio è abbastanza confuso e poco compatto, complice forse i vari cambi di palco a tempo record, ma dopo i primi pezzi questo sembra assestarsi definitivamente e rendere tantissimo.
Il coinvolgimento del pubblico è alle stelle e così cominciano a scattare i primi poghi di massa al centro della sala, questo determinato sicuramente dall’ottima riuscita del trittico funambolico ‘Lucid Stratum’, ‘Ad Hoc Revolt’ e ‘We March’, ma anche dalla energica carica che mettono in mostra i cinque musicisti scandinavi.
La bella serata live dei Drottnar si conclude con ‘Destruction’s Czar’, estratto dal primo full-lenght ufficiale. La song è veramente potentissima, una speed track a tutti gli effetti con un drumming e uno screm/growl da fare venire letteralmente i brividi che conclude al meglio la trasferta Svizzera dei cinque black metaller.

KREYSON
Ecco arrivare finalmente il turno della band più acclamata e attesa di questa prima giornata, soprattutto dai numerosi fan che sono venuti fedeli fin dalla Repubblica Ceca muniti di bandiere e cappellini promozionali, per assistere alla performance dei loro beniamini.
I Kreyson in patria sono una vera istituzione hard’n’heavy, ormai attivi da più di dieci anni e con alle spalle numerosi album ed MCD, targati all’inizio della carriera dal primo moniker LadaKrizec, che riprendeva il nome del cantante.
Per chi non li conoscesse ancora, i cinque musicisti cristiani propongono un classico heavy metal influenzato da band secolari quali Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rush e Running Wild.
I brani in scaletta proposti per questa serata sono soprattutto estrapolati dall’album realizzato anche in versione inglese, “Angel On The Run” (titolo originale, “Andel na úteku”).
Il live si apre con l’ormai celebre traccia ‘Kreyson’, cantata a squarciagola da tutti i presenti, con un chorus degno di Judas Priest e Queensryche. Il gruppo, forte della sua esperienza, si dimostra ottimo intrattenitore ed è soprattutto la figura carismatica del cantante Ladislav Krížek ad emergere dal contesto con movenze e atteggiamenti tipici di un frontman.

Un’altra song degna di nota è l’anthemica ‘Skalp’, tratta sempre da “Angel On The Run”, un mid-tempo molto coinvolgente e ritmato che mette anche in forte evidenza la bravura e la tecnica del chitarrista molto old-school, Jaroslav Barton, somigliante davvero a Glenn Hughes, soprattutto per fattezze fisiche ed estetiche.
Il sound è finalmente buono e amalgamato per la prima volta nella serata, ottimi anche i volumi, regolati stavolta ottimamente e l’esibizione dei Kreyson fila liscia senza intoppi né cali di tensione con i presenti che continuano a gradire.
Il concerto volge alla sua conclusione con altre belle rocciose canzoni, come ‘Fade Out’ e ‘Stay A Moment’, che confermano i Kreyson come un’ottima realtà della scena heavy cristiana e premiandola come migliore della serata.

EXAUDI
Il primo atto dell’EOR 2008 si conclude, in un orario anche abbastanza tardo, con l’esibizione di una band culto nel panorama christian, gli Exaudi.
Il gruppo tedesco nonostante non abbia ancora realizzato un full-lenght intero e abbia in archivio solo due MCD, si è guadagnato in così poco tempo ottime critiche dal mondo musicale e un discreto seguito.
Il loro doom/gothic metal claustrofobico e cupo si rifà moltissimo ai maestri Candlemass, ma contemporaneamente strizza l’occhio a sonorità death metal, il tutto impreziosito dall’ammaliante suono del violino della bellissima Katharina e dalla figura portante del leader Thoralf Bach (chitarrista e cantante).
La scenografia rappresentata dal combo per il concerto è di classica ispirazione doom parecchio contemplativa e alla fine risulterà la migliore di tutto il festival. Candele accese disposte lungo il perimetro del palco, costumi tipici nordici-teutonici e inoltre un’entrata in scena del tutto particolare, dove la band si presenta al pubblico completamente incappucciata con tonache e in sottofondo un intro tanto oscuro quanto divino.

I brani più acclamati dal pubblico, seppur in minoranza, sono senz’altro quelli estrapolati dall’ultimo fortunato MCD “Ein Stein”. Davvero buone le esecuzioni della titletrack, di ‘Schrei aus der Düsternis’ e di ‘Das Schloss’, che dal vivo rendono davvero tantissimo.
Un plauso particolare và alla bella Katharina, bravissima a tessere melodie malinconiche con il suo violino, e soprattutto al frontman Thoralf, sempre presente con la sua chitarra e con il suo growl insistente. Buona anche la prova del tastierista e del bassista che si fanno soprattutto notare per la tenuta sul palco e per i numerosi headbanging.
In conclusione, possiamo dire che gli Exaudi sfornano un’ottima prestazione visto l’orario e nonostante la presenza di tastiere e violino che avevano fatto temere il peggio per il sound, propiziando nel migliore dei modi la prima serata dell’Elements Of Rock 2008.

Finally also this year it came the most waited and easily accessible christian metal event for us Italian, the festival Elements Of Rock, at the fifth year of its life and as usually it received a wide public coming from everywhere in Europe.
Theatre of the show was yet a time the beautiful Stadthofsaal of Uster, a town near Zurich.
After the past editions in which there were bands like Virgin Black, Rob Rock, Narnia and Balance Of Power, the bands of this year weren’t so much famous, if not the power metal christian band Seventh Avenue, coming from the success of its last hard work “Terium”, but I assure you that the quality of the show was appreciable all the same.
Furthermore for the italian, and above all for a real sicilian like me, it was a reason of big pride to watch in the list of the bands, the sicilians Metatrone, unique representative band during that day about the catholic faith together with Kreyson, among bands like evangelic, calvinist, and protestant ones: completing the list of the band there were also the gothic band Monoblock, the deathstar Thy Bleeding Skies, Kreyson, Drottnar and Exaudi.
My first adventure labeled EOR, began to the airport of Catania with my friends Metatrone. I was a little bit sleepy during the morning but ready for this spiritual experience other than musical. Landed to the airport in Linate near to Milan, after an hour in late as usual in the airplane companies of Wind Jet, I found to meet me, the great and patient Leo (managing editor of Holysteel) with the nice Monika (unblacksister) and together we left to Swiss.
So after meeting to each other and loaded the luggage in the car, we started to proceed toward to Uster followed by Metatrone band. After various highways vicissitudes, like various cars queues, above all near San Gottardo and at the border, we arrived to the destination at about 17:30, quite tired but charged for the first evening.

ARCANE LEGION
The first day of EOR 2008, which offered an hors d’oeuvre of five bands, was opened punctually by the german Arcane Legion added at the last moment, in fact on the official program, they didn’t appear in the band list.
The teutonic band, that has only a self produced DemoMCD realized in 2006, presented an heavy/power metal style like Hammerfall, Iron Maiden and Accept, that resulted very appreciable.
Unfortunately like every opening band, they had to face not perfect sounds that a lot of times had conflict problems, and so they didn't show up the voice so much and the solo guitar parts, that else they would have been more appreciable.
Among the songs, there was the opening song ‘Overcome The World’, that remembers a lot the Hammerfall band, ‘Sons Of Thuner’ by Maiden matrix and the epic ‘Sound Of War’ that it seemed to be the battle horse of the german band. <

The exhibition flew well, despite the sound problems just said before, thanks to the excellent energy and vitality of the band, and the public that seemed to appreciate the performance, in particular manner when they proposed ‘The Clansman’ (Iron Maiden), sang by everyone at big voice.
It was a pity for the general sound that appeared too much mixed and chaotic, even if the band searched to give the best and searched to be as much involving as they could, and in this they made a good job.

DBEALITY
The music changed totally with the following exhibition of Dbeality, American band who played an heavy/doom metal style, leaded by the singer David Benson, a perfect clone of Ozzy Osbourne. The line-up was completed by musicians like CJ Grimmark and Andreas Olsson just affirmed and known by christian fans because they play in famous bands like Narnia, Rob Rock.
What we can noticed since the opening song ‘Premonition Of Doom’ it was the high technician ability, then an excellent sound well compact and above all a better experience on-stage then the opening band.
The song played by the band was near to the sounds of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society with heavy metal rhythms and claustrophobic cadences deriving from the doom scene, and they'd been appreciated a lot by the public that answered as best as it could.
These songs were extrapolated from the Benson's solo albums and from the full-length debut labeled Dbeality.

Exemplar in this way the excellent ‘Crushing The Dark Cathedral’ present in a demo made in 2001, ‘C.O.S’ and ‘Victory’ from the last discography and ‘Holy Psychotherapy’, that showed up the technician and the monstrous cleverness of the guitar player Grimmark, a real guitar hero.
And what saying about Benson ? He is a real driving force and a figure that transmits much peacefulness and serenity also when he sings on stage: a real myth.
Excellent show, so, about Dbeality, who entertained the christian fans with a healthy and pure heavy metal.

DROTTNAR
After the Dbeality show, it was the turn of the norwegian band Drottnar, with the soviet military uniform, their recognizing symbol, to devastate the public just warm by their previous concerts.
Their black metal style had the Dimmu Borgir and Immortal connotation, but in general all the extreme northern scene. The band had just only, “Welterwek” (2006) and two previous releases, one MCD and one collection (2003 and 2000) and they made the people glimpsing a prosperous future in the european christian black metal panorama, we could just see the dates of their following concerts, even in America, to be conscious about the excellent moment of the Drottnar band.
The concert started greatly with the devastating ‘Soul Suburbia’ that pushed into the limelight the excellent cleverness of the two guitar players Karl Fredrik Lind and Bengt Olsson and the very fast drummer Glenn-David Lind.
Even if the attention was toward the frontman singer Sven-Erik Lind, great on stage, who appeared with the megaphone like every live show’s band.

The general sound, unfortunately, at the beginning was enough confuse and few compact, thanks to the changes on the stage in a record time, but after the first pieces it seemed to be better.
The involvement of the public was high and so it started to enjoy a lot thanks also to the songs ‘Lucid Stratum’, ‘Ad Hoc Revolt’ and ‘We March’, but also thanks to the energy that the five Scandinavian musicians showed.
The nice evening of Drottnar ended with ‘Destruction’s Czar’, extracted from their first official full length album.
The song was really powerful, a real speed track with a drumming and a scream/growl to make literally coming the shivers and so Switzerland journey of the five unblack band ended in the best way.

KREYSON
Then it arrived the turn of the most acclaimed and waited band of that first day, above all by the numerous fans that came faithfully from the Czech Republic with the flags and promotional hats, to assist to the performance of their favourite band.
Kreyson band in their country are a real institution hard’n’heavy, just active from more than ten years and with a lot of albums and MCD in their career, labeled since the beginning of their career by the first moniker LadaKrizec, who retook the name of the singer.
For the people that doesn’t know them, the five christian musicians propose a classic heavy metal influenced from secular bands like Iron Maiden, Judad Priest, Rush and Running Wild.
The songs proposed for that evening were above all extrapolated from the album realized also in english version, “Angel On The Run” (original title, “Andel na úteku”).
The show opened with the famous track ‘Kreyson’, sung at the top of the present people’s voice, with a chorus worthy of Judas Priest and Queensryche.
The band strong of its experience, demonstrated an excellent performance and it was above all the charismatic figure of the singer Ladislav Krížek, to emerge from the contest with attitudes typical of a frontman.

Another song worthy to be cited was anthem song ‘Skalp’ , taken always from “Angel On The Run” a mid-time very involving with such a rhythm that put in evidence the cleverness and the technician of the guitar player very old school, Jaroslav Barton, similar really to Glenn Hughes, above all for his physical connotation.
The sound was really good for the first time in the evening, excellent also the volumes, regulated this time in an excellent manner and the exhibition of the Kreyson band proceeded with not any breaks or decreases of tension with the people that continued to enjoy.
The concert went to its end with other nice rocky songs, like ‘Fade Out’ and ‘Stay A Moment’, which confirmed Kreyson like an excellent reality of the heavy Christian scene and rewarding it like the best band of the evening.

EXAUDI
The first act of EOR 2008 ended enough late, with the exibition of a band that is a cult in the Christian panorama, Exaudi.
The german band despite it hadn’t yet realized a full-length album and it had in its archive only two MCD, earned in few time excellent critics by the musical world and a discrete fellowship.
Their dark and claustrophobic doom/gothic metal is similar to the masters Candlemass, but in the same time it was similar to death metal sonorities, and all of this embellished by the enchanting sound of the violin of the beautiful Katharina and by the fundamental figure of the leader Thoralf Bach (guitar player and singer).
The set represented by the band for the concert was by doom classic inspiration and enough contemplative and at the end it would have been resulted the best of all the festival. Candles lit prepared along the perimeter of the stage, typical northern-teutonic costumes and then an entering to the scene all particular, where the band presented itself to the public, completely hooded with frocks and at the background an intro so much dark as divine.

The most acclaimed songs by the public, despite in minority, are nothing less than the ones extrapolated by the last lucky MCD “Ein Stein”. Really good the executions of the title track, ‘Schrei aus der Düsternis’ and ‘Das Schloss’ , that by live yielded really a lot.
A particular merit goes to the beautiful Katharina, very good to execute melancholy melodies with her violin, and above all to the frontman Thoralf, always present with his guitar and with insistent growl. Good also the exhibition of the keyboard player and the bass guitar player that were noticed above all for their capacity on the stage and their numerous headbangings.
At conclusion, we can say that Exaudi made a good exhibition despite the time and despite the presence of the keyboards and violin that made think the worst for the sound, propitiating for the best of ways the first evening of Elements Of Rock 2008.
